Lance 228 Report Share Posted September 26, 2010 I am a die hard Grundy fan...but I miss our old rivals...the old Green Dragons are gone now, but some great games were played and lots of memories remain. Found these pics from the 80s and figured I would share... http://s362.photobucket.com/albums/oo63/swvasports/Garden%20Green%20Dragons%201980s/

Bigrhsfan 884 Report Share Posted September 26, 2010 Some very good pics Lance ! Sadly, a lot of these old rivalries are slowly dying out. It's sad, but I guess it's a sign of the time of consolidation !
redtiger 1,742 Report Share Posted September 26, 2010 Nice pics! They had some good games against Haysi too
WaveFan09 50 Report Share Posted September 27, 2010 I miss garden, stupidest thing I've ever seen was when they painted a big TV over the garden mural, they had left it alone for a while...wonder if you can dig up anything on the whitewood indians...or even better the council cobras football team
eastboundanddown 10 Report Share Posted September 29, 2010 I miss garden, stupidest thing I've ever seen was when they painted a big TV over the garden mural, they had left it alone for a while...wonder if you can dig up anything on the whitewood indians...or even better the council cobras football team Best thing ever was when Hibbets was at Garden in 98' or 99 I can't remember which one, after beating Honaker they would have made the playoffs... before the Million dollar EMATS field Hibbets did a 10 yard run and go slide through the Russel Co. Red Clay.... I bet Honaker misses that field sometimes... every Thursday like clockwork if a speedy team was coming in the Honaker Volunteer Fire Department was more than happy to come "water" the field down! Hibbets slid a solid 30 yards! Then Ritchie Wilson turned in Garden for an ineligible player knocking both Garden AND his own team of Pound out of the playoffs lol! 1inStripes 933 Report Share Posted September 29, 2010 That was the fall of 1997. That put Thomas Walker into the playoffs against Rye Cove after Rye Cove had beat them 76-0 in the regular season.

That put Thomas Walker into the playoffs against Rye Cove after Rye Cove had beat them 76-0 in the regular season. That's right because in 98 Garden went to the Region D championship and beat Rye Cove at the last second and got a ticket to play Pound of all teams in the Region D championship where it was about 70-0! eastboundanddown 10 Report Share Posted September 29, 2010 ...and all this is now lost in the hallways of Twin Valley....sad. They still have the 86 team Mural on the wall at TVES, and the original Dragon Mural is still up.The one with THE Ray Jones rocking the handlebar mustace, Jake Yates with the Mr. T mohawk, and Joey Worley with his UK stuff. If you go on 460 past Applachian Pharmacy School if you look at the old Garden High School/Garden Middle/ Garden Elementary/current Appalachian Pharmacy school The Dragon mural is still up, it was in the lifetime agreement that they always have the Dragon mural on the wall, they just painted a pennant holding APS in its right hand. @ Twin Valley High School has a trophy case they have some trophies, jersey's basketball etc. half whitewood and half garden. So it's not all lost, only thing they took down was the huge Dragon mural that had the old BDD with St. Paul, Pocahontas, and the rest of the BDD under 3 huge dragons lol. Dang Bats lived behind it and birds!

Actually that was the fall of 99. In 98 Appy played RC and Twin Springs played JI Burton.
redtiger 1,742 Report Share Posted September 29, 2010 Most of the Green Dragon tradition is lost but the history is still there. What happened to TV anyway? Declining enrollment ? Garden always had some solid teams and (Whitewood didnt have alot of tradition, in football atleast) Whitewood had some good athletes. The wheels have really fallen off over there, sad to see really. I do like the fact that they have Garden and Whitewood trophies and stuff up at the school helps keep the schools and traditions alive. On a side note think of what the trophy case at Powell Valley/Appalachia will look like, 14 state title trophies and too many regional title trophies to count. Does anyone know what happened to the stuff from Pochahontas?

hogo_sportz 19 Report Share Posted April 9, 2011 (edited) Used the pics in this thread to recreate the helmets I could find in them. Anyone able to attach years to these iterations? Edited April 9, 2011 by hogo_sportz
tbgfan 856 Report Share Posted April 9, 2011 I have looked everywhere on the internet for stuff on Garden and Council footbal both. Haven't found anything. I have an old Garden Green Dragon vs. Honaker High School football program from 9/28/84. If you would like to have it just pm and I will send it to you. rjhall71 61 Report Share Posted April 9, 2011 I remember we played Garden in basketball when I was still at Rich Valley. Didn't they have carpet in the High School?
eastboundanddown 10 Report Share Posted April 11, 2011 Anything that had yellow in it was during the mid to late 80's. During the 86 year run, and during the 90's and 2000's it was just white and Kelly Green when we played for Roger and got him elected with numerous Grundy games... Lance you'll be happy to know that 2 of the 3 murals are still in tact. The back wall of TVES still has the Mural with Coach Jones, Joey W. the kicker that went to UK broke all their records and tried out for the Cowboys but ran in with the law, and the Appalachian Pharmacy School still has the huge dragon on the gym, if you look going up 460 towards Rich Vegas you can see it, it was in the contract that to get the building they had to keep the mural up, the just painted a flag in it's right hand that says Appalachian RX School The mural was actually a BDD Mural..... had St. Paul Demon Deacons, Council Cobras, Pocahontas and Whitewood Indians, Haysi and Honaker Tigers, Hurley Rebels, I think they took it down to repaint purple black and silver on everything and b/c bats lived behind it.... redtiger 1,742 Report Share Posted April 11, 2011 Haysi had T-shirts made up in the early 90s that had a Tiger and all of the other BDD schools mascots at its feet. At the top it said "look what the cats drug in". I thought it was a really cool shirt, I wish I could have seen the mural w/ all of the teams, sounds cool
eastboundanddown 10 Report Share Posted April 11, 2011 Garden also had the white numbers on each side of the stripe down the center a la Alabama I guess Coach Rife was a Tide fan....
cityofRaven 2,453 Report Share Posted April 12, 2011 I really liked the all green uni's they wore in the late 90's with the Alabama type helments.
