LegendatLegion 109 Report Share Posted December 5, 2015 Alcoa today won the 3A State title in Tennessee 20-0 over Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA) of Nashville It was the 14th State title for Alcoa. Their coach Gary Rankin won his 11th overall, and 7th at Alcoa in 10 years. He had previously won 4 at Riverdale. His overall record is a Tennessee State record 383-71 (only 8 coaches ever have won 400 games at the high School level) his record at Alcoa is 131-14. Alcoa was 14-1 their only loss was to 6A power and county rival Maryville 20-14. Maryville (14-0) plays Ravenwood in the 6A final tomorrow. Maryville's coach George Quarles is in his 18th year and has an overall record of 234-14. He has 11 State titles. His tenure has included a 74 game win streak from 2004-2008. I know that Chippie Chappell had an overall record of 119-9-1 at Central Lunenburg in VA at one point.

MrSocko 136 Report Share Posted December 5, 2015 Belfry High School in KY is playing for their 5th State Title this weekend. Belfry is about a 50 minute to hour drive from Hurley. Head Coach Phillip Haywood of Belfry, goes for win 403 this weekend in the 3A State Title game vs. Lexington Catholic. Coach Haywood is 402-128 for his career at Prestonsburg and Belfry. This makes his 11th trip to the state finals with a record of 4-6 in the finals. Belfry beat Pikeville (34-8), Johnson Central (41-0) and Knoxville Catholic (38-14) and those 3 teams are playing for state titles with Pikeville already winning the 1A KY State title Thursday night. Belfry's only lost was to Cabell Midland which has roughly 1900 kids compared to 700 kids or so for Belfry. This makes Belfry's 6th straight title game appearance. Just a bunch of mountain boys running the wing-t that is coached by a legend and one hell of a fine man. redtiger
BigWinners 1,643 Report Share Posted December 5, 2015 Dang, if Phil had coached one more year, he could have ended up in second place all-time in VHSL wins. Pretty impressive. Is he second all-time in state titles behind Mike Smith?
cowboysnskynyrd 74 Report Share Posted December 5, 2015 Yes, he is. What's impressive is that Powell Valley and Appalachia, 4th on the list btw, have 14 combined. Future looks bright for Union football.

Is he second all-time in state titles behind Mike Smith? It's even more impressive when you consider his record vs. 5-6 coaches on that list. It's not like his total coaching wins at PV came preying on the Sisters of the Poor... Year in year out PV played all comers and had one of if not the toughest schedule in SWVA. The 3-0 vs. Chappell is particularly impressive when you consider that Chappell made the finals with Lunenburg nearly every year from the early 80's through the early 90's. cowboysnskynyrd 74 Report Share Posted December 6, 2015 I agree. PV definitely had some of the greatest teams ever. I know I'm showing my old age, but the hardest hit I ever received came from Eupton Jackson. The sad part (for me anyhow) was that he had the ball. If there not a game you want to go to in SWVA on any given Friday, it's worth the drive over to watch the Pirates play if they are at home. I watched them on tv earlier in the season, did not look like your typical Eastern KY/SWVA team. In terms of athleticism in the backfield and size up front as impressive of a team as ive seen locally. I meant to get over to KY and watch a game but never did. Thats on my to do list for next season

falconfan1 125 Report Share Posted December 7, 2015 I heard Rankin (and his strength coach) speak at a clinic last year. He's awesome I have heard him a few times. Once when he was the head coach at Riverdale. I thought he was a little narcissistic for my taste. On the other hand, Quarles is pretty much a total 180. I did have a chance to watch the Maryville game. Three turnovers hurt any chance they had to win.

The West Virginia loss did not count in 1962 and the Andrew Lewis game was changed to a win. Graham ended up 9-0 vs. Virginia competition.
