Ryan4VT 4,557 Report Share Posted February 2, 2018 So here's a reset as of 2/1: He needs 285 points to break Iverson's 948 mark. He needs 393 points to break Tanner's 2770 mark. There are 4 regular season games left, 2 guaranteed (basically) M7 tournament games and 3 guaranteed (basically) 2D games. That's 9 games that are all but certain. To break the record in those 9 games he would need 31.6ppg to break Iverson and 43.6ppg to break Tanner. The 32ppg is actually very plausible, given his season ppg is 37. If you add in the 3 state tournament games that they could potentially play (so this total is with a run to a state final), those numbers jump to 23.75 and 32.75 respectively. With a state title run, I'd be shocked if he didn't break both, given his pace this season. Liam McPoyle and swva_havok_fan 1

Think the latter 2 or 3 games may be tougher to average the points he needs to break Tanners. He may need 3 or 4 super games of 50+points to help get him over the top! He had the super game vs. Dan River last year in the regional semis. I'm not saying he has another one of those games, but it wouldn't shock me if he did somewhere along the way. And one of those type games would be a big boost.

The '70s and '80s had a 20-game regular season limit with a single elimination post season. I think the limit may be 22 for the regular season now. You also have both the champ and runner-up advancing out of district/conference and region. It looks like Gate City will have 30 games if they make it to the title. Powell Valley won the title in '74 playing 28 games.

Marsee's best season was 1975-'76 when he scored 768 points in 25 games (30.72 ppg). I couldn't find his or McClung's number of career games, but MM will certainly play in more games before it's over. No doubt Steve Marsee's point total would have been much higher with a 3-point line and deeper playoff runs.

Beamerball 566 Report Share Posted February 7, 2018 Well, this is confusing. Something has to be off. Were they wrong on his 2000th career point? He's score 506 since that point and 794 on the season as a whole, including all games that are listed. The season total should be off unless the 2000th point was not scored against Lakota East. Casey Goetz @WCYB_CaseyGoetz 2h2 hours ago After scoring 43 points tonight, @McclungMac is 154 points away from tying Allen Iverson's VHSL record of 948 points in a season. For his career, McClung has scored 2,506 points. That currently ranks 5th all-time in VHSL history. He's 264 points shy of the all-time career record Casey Goetz @WCYB_CaseyGoetz 38m38 minutes ago CORRECTION: McClung's career total is 2,467 not 2,506. 39 points he scored in a benefit game earlier this season was counted towards that total according to Gate City High School. His season total did NOT include benefit game so that is correct, still 154 points shy of record 0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes Liam McPoyle

Beamerball 566 Report Share Posted February 7, 2018 I see now, looks they were indeed counting an extra game. He scored 39 against Va High in the benefit game after Science Hill game in which he had 50 or so. I looked back and found the KTN player of the year article from last year and it says 1673 at the conclusion of last season. So, going on that, he would be at 2467 now. Looks like 2000 came later against Battle on the 5th. http://www.timesnews.net/Basketball/2017/08/03/Gate-City-s-Mac-McClung-commits-to-Rutgers Liam McPoyle
