Golf is a game of inches. A couple of made putts can change the outcome. That is, unless you're Castlewood and win District by 97 strokes.

Abingdon and Lord Botetourt advance to the VHSL Class 3 Championship at Stonehenge Golf and Country Club in Richmond October 11. Lord Botetourt beat Cave Spring on the first playoff hole to break the tie for second place.

No apololgies necessary.  I heard it was tough Monday.  Lot of wind (which I was playing The Virginian and it was plenty windy there) and tough pin placements all around at Tazewell.  I have never played there, but when I saw the scores I knew it had to be tough.

Galax and George Wythe advance to the VHSL Class 1 State Championship at Olde Mill Resort October 11. Walker Gillespie, Hunter Howard and Drew Royal advance as individuals. 

Galax defeated George Wythe in a playoff and will be the #1 overall seed for the state tournament.

Tazewell’s difficulty lies not in its distances (many of the Par 4s could be driven to pitch range by amateurs if well placed), but in the elevation changes, hazards, and winds.  It’s easy to hit a decent tee shot there and have the wind/elevation combo carry it OB.

Tazewell Country Club has a slope of 124 and a rating of 68.9. It's not overly difficult but considering the vast majority of hackers grossly overestimate how far they hit the golf ball and never factor slope or wind into the equation, it's easy to see how it can play more difficult for the average high schooler. 

To put that slope and rating into perspective, here are a few others around the region for comparison.

The VHSL state championships for Class 1 and Class 2 are being held at Olde Mill, which is likely the toughest golf course in Region C and D outside of The River Course at VT. Nothing Tazewell, Blue Ridge, Fincastle or any other golf course in our region offers will compare to the combination of severe elevation change, water everywhere, wind and forest of Olde Mill. It's just a tough golf course! I witnessed the state tournament there last October and was amazed some of those kids were able to finish. If not for a "double par" maximum on each hole, several wouldn't have. And to think, Eastern Montgomery's coach wanted Region C (held at Olde Mill last week) to play everything through the cup. Several of those kids would still be playing if they had. His team had a 78 and 5 scores over 114 with "double par" in effect.
