What was the score? Guys No one from PH comes on here and talks about them being a powerhouse. You guys took pot shots at them and they won big. Maybe they can keep it up just don't compare them to Chilhowie because right now they are a whole other level than the single a teams around here. Chilhowie that is

Coaches will be paid

The question is how does states around us continually build new schools? KY, WVA, NC, SC do it and are they really better off financially? I think it comes to the above post and forward thinking. Building are not going to last forever without major overhauls. But both supervisors and school boards do not plan for those items. Schools get to a point of being patched for so many years that when there is no choice but to build there is no money. Ad declining enrollment and our economy is makes for hard times. Just wanted to make a comment

Guys I have been watching SWVA football for 30 years. Chilhowie has a chance for many reasons but I will speak on two. First sometimes teams just get on a roll and play very well and magic happens (1988 Jonesville Bullddogs) and this year Riverheads are not the Riverheads of the last few years. That is not a slam to Chilhowie but just the truth. I think Riverheads pulls away late but give Chilhowie credit I think they are going to surprise a lot of people. 

Just a question since we are talking about coach of the year. lets discuss this. Are you choosing because they won or the coaching jobs they did. How would Mance, Turner, Carrol do at lets say Rye Cove? I mean if they are great coaches would they have would 6? My thoughts of a great coach isn't necessary winning a bunch of games but putting a hard playing fundamentally sound team. I think there are many coaches at small schools that could win 7 or more at the bigger schools but could the coaches at the bigger sholls win at the small schools? Just food for thought

Well to the point of being a coach at a small school compared to bigger schools and wins Vs loses let's look at the history books of swva football.  Coach Tom Turner for the Appalachia bulldogs was a 300 plus win coach with multiple state titles and probably never had half the talent on his sideline compared to the teams he faced.  Tom could take a hand full of boys from little coal camps and play Iron Man football and beat schools like gate city,  Powell Valley,  etc. And in years that teams like gate city and Powell Valley beat appy it was seldom a blow out.  If a coach like Tom Turner had the talent that rolled through Powell Valley and gate city he would have won 10 or state championships in my humble opinion.  I've seen mid 90s appy teams with 30 kids that could kick the crap out of just about any team today due to there sheer toughness and coach Tom turners ability to fire em up.

The fans deserve better? Not sure I can agree with that. As they do pay to get in but outside of that everywhere they are usually to criticial or too overconfident. I am not trying to  ruffle your feathers but I think if kids played the game and no one attended there would be far less problems in sports. Now I know the money pays the bills and fans can fire up the team but for every great fan there are two that are bad. I am sure the fans on this site want what is best for the program but all of this talk has only hurt your program. The kids and eveyone is reading all about the program and that doesn't help. Wish you guys the best in what ever direction the school chooses to take. This area needs strong football tradiotn and Gate City is one of the finest.

Throughout this thread, I've kept wondering a few things...just gonna put 'em out there.
1-Out of the first 4 games, who exactly should GC have beaten?  Looking down the schedule, I don't see a team in those four who GC is better than. 
2-Out of the games left, how many of those should GC be the clear favorite in?  Out of the 6 games left, I only see one team who GC is clearly better than...and that is due in large part to injury.
3-The biggest question is this...with the level of talent currently at GC, I think GC's record is where it would be even if the coach was Nick Saban. 
It's clear to me that GC is just in a sour run when it comes to athletes.  In order to be successful, you have to have athletes and you have to have talent to coach up.  Without that, it doesn't matter who your coach is.  Just my 2 cents.

The committee stated that the blindside block “involves contact by a blocker against an opponent who, because of physical positioning and focus of concentration, is vulnerable to injury. Unless initiated with open hands, it is a foul for excessive and unnecessary contact when the block is forceful and outside of the free-blocking zone.” It is too late now for the Mullins kid and would not have changed the injury had a flag beeen thrown but it was illegal. Not cheap just illegal.

Radford was a football school in the 80's but since Coach Cormany's arrival we are mostly known for our basketball.  A lot of that is because the players gravitate to our basketball program because Coach Cormany is a players coach.  He is all about his players well being and his team enjoying playing the game.  Don't get me wrong. Coach disciplines with structure but all the players love playing for the Bobcats. They know they will be pushed and have fun doing it.  If Gate City has become a "basketball school" as you say, I am sure it began longer ago than you thought because players started realizing where they would compete and work hard and at the same time having fun and winning for a coach that they love playing for.  You probably wont like hearing this but until that changes your school will probably continue to be a"basketball school" because players gravitate to people who enjoy what they do and enjoy having them there with them.  Sounds like a lot of your best coaches are in the basketball program especially if your school is a "basketball school" now.  Kids know who care about them not that the football coaches do not do so now. Kids are fickle though. As long as your basketball program stays hot and is very enthusiastic about the kids it will probably be your best program at Gate City. That is how it has been at Radford for a while and Cormany even encourages them to play football.  I think that makes them want to play for him even more.  The kids love a coach who supports them no matter what they do.  Just a perspective from the outside for you to think about.  Good luck to the Devils in future games though. All teams run through down cycles. Devils may be experiencing one now. Its your attitude though this cycle that will determine whether Gate City remains a "basketball school" or whether football makes a comeback.  Just my thoughts on the matter.

Great post. I miss the how the coaches after the game would go into the opposing locker room and speak to players and coaches the game was played harder but in the end there was better sportsmanship. I miss that no one knew the scores until highlights tonight or the next day in the Bristol Paper. The fans were different as they actually watched the game and not spent time on the phone socializing. Going to Rye Cove and getting a bologna sandwhich and chips. Walking home after practice with no ride. The passion the players had for the game and it was evident on the field.
And of course the oldtimers telling me how great it was when they played and how much tougher the players were! LOL

Each week there is someone that says there are players suspended then no comments, Stop stirring the pot on these young guys and let them play

It is good to see respect between too teams and not trash talk. That is why GW is the measuring stick and this side of the mountain and that PH has earned some respect. I just think that the young men form GW will be motivated to stop Humphrey and they have the size and skill to do it. I would love to make it to this one but last Friday was my night off to watch football.

Wow why the hate towards PH and Hurley? I really don't think anyone form either side has said their team can beat  GC, Graham, Richlands or Union. I think it is great for SW VA to have teams winning. What about Chilhowie? They are having a great year after two tough seasons. I really think outside of Galax there are several teams that could beat each other. Truth is and it has been said on here that Galax had its hands full with Hurley last year, and they played the same "weak" schedule. LOL
