  1. Not sure of the exact score from Abingdon vs Volunteer but it looked something like 35-14. Versus David Crockett was much worse. Gate City and Abingdon both were the dominant teams over the TN teams. Was told before the scrimmage that GC and AHS would not scrimmage each other due to playing in the regular season. I did notice they were quick whistle around any QB. probably a good idea. From what I observed you could tell the Va teams were in their first scrimmage and were starting to put the package together. Naturally mistakes and corrections happened. Although both GC and AHS looked happy to be playing against someone else other than beating on one another. There were several fans sitting around me and commenting on mistakes and minor complaints about play calls, I just shook it and thought if these people were going to show up and think they were about to see either GC or AHS show up and execute in mid season form they might want to remember its was their first scrimmage. Funny though and you kind of had to laugh.
  2. AHS should be fine this year. 80+ Varsity players. The largest senior class they probably had in a decade if not ever (23). Few holes to fill on offense(Replace a the center, one other lineman and of course fill the vacant spot from Yates graduating at WR). As long as they can stay focused on the task at hand and disregard all the outside noise they could very well do big things this season. From what i understand and seen from the 7on7's the defense will be much improved from last season with some bigger, stronger, and faster play makers on that side of the ball. Looking for a big year from the Falcons and I feel like they are wanting to improve on the strides they made last year. But like an old coach once said. That all sounds great but you still gotta play the games and compete, nobody is just going to hand it to you.
  3. Not agitated. Curious as to why? Interested in the dynamic. But not agitated. I guess it really doesn't matter overall as to which district Abingdon is in. Being the only 3A school this far southwest.
  4. Retweeted Eliza Evans (@sportslady): VHSL approved Abingdon's request to move to the Mountain District starting with the 2017-18 season. ‪#‎VHSL‬ ‪#‎CoalfieldFB‬ Hmmmm
  5. Ryan. I believe the middle school does their own 2-a-days. My son plays for AHS and he said they have 80+ out this year. Doesn't surprise me considering the season they had last year. You know the ole saying. 'Winning cures a lot'.
  6. There may be a lot of surprises this season. Abingdon has 23 seniors and very high numbers of juniors and sophomores. If you hadn't noticed yet, This isn't the Abingdon of 5 or 10 years ago. There is a new culture and drive with the Falcons. They return 16 starters from last season. Losing Derrick Yates to graduation is big but they are very deep at WR. Likewise, from what Ive seen at the 7on7, they will be fine.
  7. Abingdon 8/12/16 @ Volunteer (Scrimmage) 8/19/16 @ Patrick Henry (Benefit Game) Then its on like Donkey Kong.
  8. Maybe they are holding out in hopes that they could get Frank Beamer to come out of retirement and coach middle school football.
  9. Newtons Third Law - For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. But SXSW is right about the QB. If one is planning on running the option game they better have a stud QB and a stable of stud RB's.
  10. This just my opinion. Stack the box and dare them to beat you throwing the ball. Triple option shut down. West you are correct about the triple option being rep intensive. One breakdown in assignment and the whole play is basically shot.
  11. Not a lot of chatter on here about how 7 on 7's are going? Today is the one at VT so hopefully we will hear some positives or negatives. Just curious.
  12. Abingdon has a laundry list of 7 on 7's this summer. I do think they will be at VT on the 17th also and the Big Man Camp on the 18th
  13. Abingdon High School 2016 8/26 @ John S Battle 9/2 H Gate City 9/9 H Christiansburg 9/16 @ Blacksburg 9/30 @ Graham 10/7 H Lebanon (Homecoming) 10/14 @ Virginia High School 10/21 H Richlands 10/28 @ Tazewell 11/4 H Marion
  14. Matthew Fulton for Abingdon could be a beast this year at RB. The kid has been in the weight room religiously this off season. Heard his 40 is at 4.6. Though he had a good season last year, he could breakout this year. Could be one to watch in 2016.
  15. Virginia High drops a heart breaker in the bottom of the 7th http://www.heraldcourier.com/sports/abingdon-clips-virginia-high/article_957d280e-0c2c-11e6-a661-c3d19a3efd3b.html
  16. Couple that schedule with a new HC and possible staff. New Offense, New Defense and the fact that all, if not most of those teams are predicted to be post season caliber teams.
  17. Its been awfully quiet on the baseball chatter the last couple of weeks.
  18. Wow! Talk about a hard way to go early in the season. That's a tough 5 or 6 games to open a season on.
  19. This. Ryan they may be the best two QB's in the state this coming year. Sturgill is getting a lot of attention from pretty big colleges. Should be fun to watch them finish their respective high school careers.
  20. I seriously doubt Coach Colobro would return, not to just Gate City, but to any head coaching job. He is retired from teaching and more than likely whoever takes the head coach job would have to be in a teaching role. My bet is it would be Jeremy.
  21. Agreed. At least you all play Graham before we do so there will be a measuring stick so to speak. JK
  22. We shall see. Richlands has to play on the road. Its been back and forth the last few years with the home team winning. Advantage AHS Gate City isnt going to improve that much in the near future. They lose to RHS, AHS, and Union again in 2016 Blacksburg is trying to fill alot of holes due to graduation. We'll have to see what they have in the cupboards. On a side note: AHS will have the largest senior class on their roster in a decade with 18-21 seniors with significant playing time under their pads. If AHS is going to make a run at a 3A state title this is their year to do it.
  23. He is a great kid and one of the best teammates you would want to be around. Congratulations to this kid!
  24. Noaks from Union is another who could get some attention. Depending on the season he has.
