Their job is to look after their kids first. And to be honest at this they are doing their "District" foes a favor. If you really think about it it is better for the district teams to play a competitive opponent instead of Bland at this time. Bland let it be know last year that they were not going to play district football so it is no shock to the other district schools.
My thirty-mile-view of the Narrows/Giles situation mirrors Covington/Alleghany. Insular communities with generational rivalry and political hurdles. It took a lot of financial hardship, lost revenue, increased taxes and lost population to get Covington and Alleghany to the point of consolidation. They eventually got so beat down fighting to stay separate, they gave up and let nature take its course. After that, the process went pretty quickly. I don't see Narrows and Giles at that point yet.
Granted, I don't know as much about Scott County politics but I don't believe Gate City has ever been rivals of Twin Springs and Rye Cove. It might not be as difficult to get all parties on the same page not having to negotiate across a rivalry divide going back generations.
I think the hurdles were even higher for the Covington - Alleghany consolidation since Covington is an independent city and two separate governments had to come to an agreement.
Parry McCluer head coach Jack Baker is leaving after one season for Nelson County. Interesting choice considering Baker had Parry McCluer deep into the playoffs in his first season and Nelson County's continued ineptitude in football. Nelson County is 25-111 since the 2008 season and hasn't had a winning season since 2002. Their last playoff appearance was 1989 and they have never won a playoff football game.
Baker still lives in Rustburg. Much shorter commute and He stated that he was getting a pay raise as well.
Precisely. It’s a one-off, nothing more. The only 3 teams within 6 hours that had any opening AND were willing to play Tazewell were Keyser, WV; Colonial Heights, VA; and Bourbon County, KY.
Unfortunately Bourbon County and Keyser have much better facilities than Colonial Heights. But it is what it is. Is there a reason why Tazewell did not try to enforce the contract? I think I know the answer but I could be wrong.
I've always heard a few different stories on how the game came to be and a few things that transpired after the fact but I have never had those stories confirmed.
