  1. I do believe the GC touchdown "Daddy Cap" will be passed around a few times Friday night. GC-35 Richlands- 12 (all FGs)
  2. If unions secondary is as rough as I have heard on this board expect Coach Carroll to take full advantage of that with a wide open passing attack. It could end up being a shoot out if see can keep pace and Union stalls out self inflicted penalties or fumbles. If it is one one score game late in the 4th and Lee has the ball with a chance to win I would be very nervous as a Union fan.
  3. A lot of tazewell folks are saying they have an improved run D but according to the paper Chilhowie rushed for 235 yards. A good chunk of those yards where with the 1s Chilhowie really pushed that line around which was surprising to me looking at the size difference. Now a lot of those yard where because Chilhowie was able to confuse tazewell with a lot of moving parts most of which can be fixed if a staff has 2 films to game plan with but tackling was not a strong suit for the bulldogs in that one. With that being said. I have not seen VA high yet but IF Jones is 100% this could be a shoot out. VA highs weakness on D is against the run so Tazewell needs to run the ball and chew clock to have a chance. VA high has athletes to match Tazewells so throwing it around all night is just playing into their hand. I honestly am going to call this a toss up depends on the coaching staffs in this one IMO and who ever is willing to attack the other teams weakness. If Jones is out Tazewell by 2 scores if not it comes down to who can kick an extra point.
  4. 3 straight losing season has really pissed you off.... Great talent with little depth means you are one injury away from your season going to hell. That does not reflect the coach though. Tazewell was in the dumps 4 years ago and its hard to get kids out when you are not good. But hats off to Coach Harris because he was able to use that talent to wins some games and now he has a roster of 50 and a JV for the first time in years. One injury wont kill them this year and the young kids get to play against players their own age. I agree Tazewell is moving in the right direction and that bulldog doesnt seem as scared of what is now just an F1 Tornado that use to be an F5.
  5. I would say for the same reason Northwood took Marion off the schedule a few years back and will most likely be off next season. Lee being a larger class 2 school and Thomas Walker being a smaller class 1 school does not really help either school to play each other. Lee should win 9 out of 10 years and Thomas Walker might walk away with enough injuries to screw the rest of the season. They have played 8 times and Lee has won all of them by an average score of 42-11. It really does not benefit either team to play in the regular season.
  6. From an outside prospective the minute Mance went to go work on his tan the coaching gap has narrowed by a lot. Nothing against Tarter I am sure he is a great guy and coach but I do believe it is a long closer than its been the last 20 years
  7. Somebody is still feeling the effects of happy hour last night at 5 am
  8. Honestly 3 years ago this would have been a much better match up. Tazewell was starting to build back up from a rough few year and Chilhowie was coming off back to back state runner up finishes. It would have been great for both teams. Tazewell gets to play a team that was coming off 2 great seasons but still had plenty coming back to make another deep play off run. Chilhowie gets to face a bigger 2A school to get their kids ready for the physicality of Marion the next week. Now Tazewell seems to be rolling with high numbers and big expectations. Chilhowie is lacking in size and team speed that they have hung their hat on in the past. It is very hard to walk in to Chilhowie and leave with a win I am convinced that they have some kind of old Indian curse on opposing team that come in there but I dont think the voodoo works for benefit games. Tazewell should do well and be building depth by the second quarter IMO. I just hope Tazewell doesnt get the big head and stays focused on their goals for the season and Chilhowie and Tazewell can get out of there injury free.
  9. The only way the Virginia High and Chilhowie game is in the mix is if they are undefeated. I think Chilhowie has atleast 2 loses by then personally I dont see VA high getting out of week one undefeated. Even if they do beat Tazewell they still have to play Wise and Graham
  10. hahaha I am sure the boys from Bland, Marion, and Lee appreciate the love!
  11. same 2 people voted for the team that everyone is thinking is going to be last in each district.. Maybe they just misread the question or just think this is a golf post where lowest score wins
  12. Should be a great time for Tazewell to build depth. I know Chilhowie graduated their best athlete since Sanchez in Gilly. They also lost Hutton and Martin those 3 where the offense last year. If Tazewells run D is improved they should have a hard time moving the ball. Creasy and Harris shouldnt step on the field after the 1st quarter I just wouldnt risk it.
  13. I have not heard a word about the Chilhowie/Grundy scrimmage so I have no idea what Chilhowie has but I read on here Tazewell had their issues vs radford. This should be a great tune up game for Tazewell because the top 5 athletes on the field should be wearing green
  14. Agreed that have the great Chris Akers at the helm! Lol
  15. When it was 1s vs 1s Honaker busted one big run on Marion then was held pretty quite the rest of the night. Honaker had a running back that looked very good. The rumor going around the stands was that he was a Graham transfer not sure if there is any truth to that. Honaker offense seems to have adapted to the air raid better than Marion has the flex bone it’s still early for the canes they have some time to work out the kinks.
  16. I think the number I heard was 38 I am not sure if that he more or less than normal for them
  17. Lee county in general is a heck of a drive.. Put kids on a cheese wagon and it makes for a very long trip.
  18. You are right, but just like every other tread we ended up going down a completely different rabbit hole
  19. Graham is the clear favorite and its not close regardless of their skill positions they have the best line on both sides of the ball in the district. 2-5 could go anywhere though each team in that group has their pros and cons Tazewell- probably has the most coming back with Harris and Creasy but until I see consistent line play out of them and some sort of run game I will still question their ability to win the big game. Very talented and high numbers compared to recent years. If anyone can knock off Graham its them IMO but they have to play a perfect game. You also have to wonder how they handle the success from the last few years. Do they have a taste of winning and they know what it takes and keep it going or do they get complacent. Richlands- They are a polar opposite of Tazewell. Traditional great line play but they lack a truly explosive play maker. Webb and Simmons are gone and they are going to rely heavily on Brown and the run game. If that gets going It may be the first winning season since Mance. If not it could be another long year for big blue nation. VA high- Can they replace the production of Stevie. For the past 4 years their offense has been put the ball in Stevie's very capable hands and get the hell out of the way and that has worked out for them. Now all the pressure falls on Brody Jones and Poku. Brody is a man child and Poku can fly can make plays to keep them in a lot of games. Defense was a weak spot for them last year if they are more sound on that side of the ball and find a run game so they can air it out they might be in good shape. "Candy Canes"- Last few years have been a struggle but one thing that Marion has going for them that is an advantage is they did not lose a single play maker from last year. These guys also have another year to grow under their belt. New coach, new system, and maybe a new mind set. If they can build some momentum early in the season they could be dangerous. If they sweep Chilhowie, Northwood and Grayson and slipt or play Central and GC close they could be 4-1 3-2 going into the Abingdon game full of confidence and starting to gel they could surprise one of the teams above them. Or they could crash and burn who knows but this district has to potential to be very interesting the last 4 weeks with the 2-5 teams fighting for seeding or a playoff birth.
  20. 5 paid spots for both jv and varsity it’s tough football takes a lot of time if you coach you don’t do it for the pay but it’s hard to ask someone to put in that time for nothing or even half a stipend
  21. I can only speak for Smyth county as far as number of stipends but they only get a head coach stipend and 4 assistance. That is at a bear minimum 1 stipend too short. Most programs like you said rely on volunteers to fill those other spots that you need to run a good program. Some school split stipends and pay under the table. Chilhowie (rumor but this is what I heard) give some coaches indoor and outdoor track stipends to fill out there 13 man coaching staff. Then you have schools like Northwood with very few male teachers in the building and have to rely on people from the community to coach which usually ends up being dads.
  22. There are some people involved in taking the team picture that say its "too hard" for them to tell who the kids are if they are all in numerical order regardless of class. I agree it looks so much better but sometimes its not worth the trouble. Also media day is the worst day of the year for most coaches. Having to hand out everything then take it back up, losing 30 minutes of practice time and the focus of some of your younger players on top of that.
  23. About a month ago I guess. I actually went last night it was super crowded hard to get a seat at a table or a drink I would let it die down a little before you go check it out
  24. I’ve never put a ton of weight on scrimmages or benefit games. The players have only had 2 weeks of practice and I’ve seen teams tear it up in the scrimmage and benefit then fall flat on their face week one and vise versa. There is also very little game planning if any at all that go into these things. I do agree with you though great for coaches to see what you have but if Richlands stomps narrows or the other way around don’t run down to the Bristol casino and put your next pay check on that team
  25. From what I’ve heard Northwood has high 20s Chilhowie is low 40s and Marion is around 50
