Having seen the video, I'm curious about the technical foul call.  I saw the referee repeatedly ask the Virginia High kid for the ball and the Bearcat player just drop it.  But had there been some odd interaction before that?  It's the official's prerogative but there appeared to be some dissension among the crew and I imagine that's a call that will be reviewed and discussed quite a bit within officials organizations.

(Responses/comments from officials on this board certainly welcome.)

I am more in awe of the 3rd tech that was called. That kid was pretty much standing in the officials huddle throwing his hands up yelling at them. How did no one on VA Highs bench see that and grab him. Why didnt a team mate or coach pull him out of that situation. You cannot act like that.

The situation at Floyd has really bothered me to the point I didn't sleep very well last night.  Several things stood out to me when I went back and watched it a few times.

    1.  The behavior of the Va High players was ridiculous, but what made it even worse was that the coaches allowed it to happen.

    2.  What if the fan that came out of the bleachers had a weapon, or even acted like he did?  Look how many innocent people could have been impacted.

    3.  All of the Floyd fans that came out of the crowd.  I get it that you think you're helping, but that could have made things much worse than they already were.

    4.  The swift action of the police.  Could they have gotten to the fan quicker?  Yes!!  But I'm sure they weren't thinking that someone would come out of the crowd, and it takes a couple seconds to register when something like that happens.

    5.  Kudos to the Floyd coaches for getting their players off the court.  That's what a coach should do to protect his players.

I've seen people complaining on social media that games like this should be played at a neutral site in a bigger gym.  The location and size of a gym shouldn't dictate how a game is played out.  People need to grow up and act like adults.  And adults that are supposed to be in charge of kids need to step up and do their jobs!!!

Bristol City Schools should be ashamed of how those players, coaches and fans represented their school system last night. It is 100% an adults in the room problem. I am by no way saying the players acted are not their fault but they learn that from somewhere. You cannot tell me it is a school issue because basketball is the ONLY sport it is that big of an issue in. Patterson does a great job in the summer and the fall of teaching these boys how to be men, giving them discipline and learning how to act during competition but then it is like they forget all of that once basketball starts. Then when baseball rolls back around (at least when Daniels was the coach) they go back to having decent sportsmanship. The way some of the players on that team ran there mouth to Floyd's students section, the officials, and each other was hard to watch and they should have been on the bench. If they put the same focus on the game that they did on talking trash then the game doesn't even go to overtime and we get to watch Graham VA High for the 6th time this year. Instead the coaches and parents of those players allowed them to act like that and probably reward that behavior and VA High finally had a crew of officials that were not going to take any crap from a 17 year old kid and it cost them.

I really hope the guy that stormed the court thinking he was some kind of bad ass spent the night in jail because as much as I love high school sports at the end of the day it is a game and its not that serious. They are getting all worked up just to get the chance to lose to John Marshall by 40 in the championship game!

He’d be the obvious choice I would think. But being an assistant and a HC is two different things. It’d be a challenge but I think he could do it. Find the right supporting staff.

With a wife and kids being head coach of two sports would be a strain. More power to him if he wants to take that on.

McDaniel could technically do both since one is fall & the other spring, couldn’t he? If not, who’s that leave that a viable candidate that’s already there? Deacon Young?

Doing both is a lot to put on one guy especially at the 2A level. Possible yes, enjoyable absolutely not! Unless your life is high school sports but you really wouldn’t have time for anything else if you do both sports right

A lot of truth in that first sentence. It's not just head coaches they won't get rid of, they won't change out coordinators/assistants either that are doing nothing for the program.  It is not about the kids anymore, it is about who knows who and who has the $$$$.  Should it even be mentioned that some schools have increased the number "coaches" on their sidelines? The kids get confused with all those "coaches" yelling at them. Union is going to have some competition with these other schools gaining sideline "coaches".

Changing out coordinators and assistants is not as easy as it sounds. This the rural football man there arnt a ton of qualified assistants out there to begin with. If you do have someone that wants to do it they almost have to be a teacher (which is not for the faint of heart and we have a major shortage of) or have a job that lets you off a 3 everyday which is hard to come by because you can live off the 2 grand you get paid to actually coach. Speaking of that coordinator don’t get paid anymore by the school system than your normal assistant so there arnt a ton of guys jumping to take on that extra work for no extra pay to get called a every name in the book on Friday nights from the stands. Your schools like Union and Chilhowie with 15 coaches on staff are the exception not the rule. There are plenty of schools out there that would kill to have half of that volunteer help. Great staffs have around 8 guys that know what they are doing that work together all moving in the same direction and they are there every day. Average staffs have 4 or 5 there everyday with some fillers on game day. I would around 40% of the schools in this area have a head coach and maybe one coordinator that know their stuff and spend more time teaching assistants than coaching kids just so they can run an half way productive practice

Yes I do understand what you are saying. I'm just thinking on a yearly basis Grayson County, Lebanon, George Wythe, and Fort Chiswell are pretty tough teams for a small 1A school to play in addition to the Hogoheegee district schedule. Eastern Montgomery should be a gimme most years. I know this schedule makes them better but it can also cause injuries and losses which could keep a good RR team at home come playoff time. I guess it all depends on what the school prefers. Thanks for your insight.

I actually overlooked Lebanon because I forgot they jumped back up to 2A and the southwest district. I would say If you could replace Lebanon and Grayson you would be in good shape. The issue is being in the smallest division you cant play down only up. Bland and Auburn would be great additions to a schedule if you where looking for wins but there is no guarantee  you actually get to play them before they fold unless you play them very early but I would not schedule them if I was an AD.

I've heard that this job was a step down or get let go sort of deal which explains the tone of the article talking about how 25 of his 37 losses came to teams that made it to the second round of the playoffs. Considering that this is a rare occurrence in this area (being let go for performance on the field) It makes me think they want to swing big for the next hire. I don't see a first time head coach getting a shot at this one.

Coach Hughes is a good man and good for the kids. He was always very helpful and humble the few times I interacted with him. I thought the RR football nonconference schedule was too demanding for a smaller school. Best wishes Coach Hughes!

I don't know a ton about Rural Retreat I know they usually are a tough well coached team. I would have to disagree on the tough non conference though. East Montgomery should be a win just about ever year. Fort Chiswell and George Wythe are not going anywhere because they are in the same county if nothing else you have to play them because of the easy travel. The only game that I would try to change is Grayson but they are going to have there down years too. The problem with changing Grayson is who do you replace them with? You are either going to have to play a class 2 school ( which Grayson basically is) or travel further than Grayson county. I am not sure that trade off is worth it.

  8. That game from an entertainment prospective has to be up there for game of the year! at least the second half which is all I watched. Rye Cove is a dang good class 1 team. You could tell from watching team play that are very well coached. On the flip side Grayson has a potent offense. Regardless of what you think about where you think Grayson should be playing, that was a heck of a game plan by Coach James. (for the record I believe its BS they are class 1). That 4th quarter was very fun to watch though if you like offense/

Stadiums should be loud,  go to a good college game, can't hear the person next to you, but it's a awesome time.  Who gives a 💩 what the noise maker is.  I for one would like to have the entire crowd with a metallic version of karate kid II noise makers.

I agree when a stadium is rocking it is great atmosphere especially when you are the home team! There arnt many places in SWVA with a great home field advantage Union is one of the few. I would put gate city up there too

What’s the reasoning behind all the Friday games this year?

It has been uncharacteristically warm for November plus the regional playoff format. The main reason to move a game to Saturday is it being too cold to have a decent gate on Friday night or a long bus right. Since this playoff is the playoffs of rematches the travel is no different than the regular season the games are the same time and date as the regular season. This is yet another reason why I liked the east west match up much better than the current set up.

I realize after the fact, that I went in too many directions in my thoughts, but comparing what we know (past and present) and using that to predict the future.
I agree that to this day, the best all-around player that I have seen was Bradshaw, even though the record book for rushing would read Clements as number 1. I have seen the former in the NFL, but am unsure of the latter.
The Jones brothers are probably the best running backs that I’ve seen, giving a slight edge to Thomas. I believe both of them had later starts sitting behind seniors, with Julius initially behind Thomas. We know both end up in the NFL.
As far as quarterback play is concerned and this being a golden era, I have a hard time comparing them with Heath Miller and even some of the great Richlands passers (McCracken and Asbury) who initially sat behind a starter as compared to the recent 4-year starters.

The Jesse comparison is an interesting one to me. It’s amazing to potentially start as a running back for 4-years, which is special, but I really have a hard time seeing those named earlier or even slightly less heralded such as a Caleb Jennings who had shorter careers as starters. I’m excited to see how he develops, but am somewhat skeptical due to size being his greatest asset as a skill position player. Is Jake Houseright a more applicable comparison?

No slights intended, the comparisons are fascinating to me and how stats may not tell the whole story at times.

Jesse is going to have a great first 2 years because defenses have to account for Reece throwing the ball. I am sure they have a plan for after he graduates but I have a hard time believing that Lebanon is going to have back to back generational QB's. His junior and Senior season will tell how good he is when everyone is keyed in on stopping him.

Stranger things have happened but I don't see Marion, Richlands, Battle, or Wise Cent catching fire anytime soon.

No shot that Richlands wins out with Graham as the last game. Even if Marion does win out the best win as far as power points go would be VA High and I think Tazewell would have to lose to Giles Lebanon and Graham to fall out even then it would by the smallest of margin. Central would have a shot if Tazewell loses out but they would have to pull pretty big upsets against Lee and Gate City

  13. Reece does not handle pressure well and Lebanons line has improved but not enough to keep the QB up right. The running back is a beast of a kid but its hard to get anything going when you are getting hit in the backfield.

IF Graham treats this line a playoff game then they should dominate because they are that good up front. IF they come out like they did against Marion and VA High they will be in for a dog fight.

The unsportsmanlike penalties need to be fixed for Graham as well. If they rack a few up those that extend Lebanon drives that could be enough to give the edge to Lebanon
