  1. No chance George Wythe or Fort Chiswell has turf do they? Easier drive for Graham and considering Graham has never won a game at Salem Stadium in its history (haven't played there but I think only 2-3 times), the other two are a better option if turfed. Ok, now that I think about it, remove Ft. Chiswell. Does George Wythe have turf over there? It's kind of half way for both

Good hard fought game here between Graham and Radford in 1989. The sound seems to come and go on the video. Mitchell stadium was packed with cheering fans believe it or not. Today's games have the PGA Tour Event feel to them at times. 😂Especially after listening to the way things used to be. Those Graham helmets looked great!

One week at a time. Go Graham!

If you watch that game, the biggest play by far that broke that game open for Graham was the run by Tony Palmer around the left end for a Touchdown. He should have had a loss of 3 yds and somehow, he broke tackles and bounced off the defender and exploded toward the endzone. That game was tight and that run by Tony was the huge play in that game that helped Graham get the win.  The guy who missed the tackle was a ridiculous multi star athlete at Radford named Cary Caldwell who was a 2 time All State 1st teamer. He got a huge interception for Radford in that game on Mike Patton.

Does anyone know if you will be able to watch this game online?

I am pretty sure it's not online.  I could have used it last week, but unless someone at the game does a facebook live stream, this one will only be heard and not watched unless at the game.  As for Graham and Radford, I'm hopeful Graham can move the ball easily.  I just looked at the Appo vs Radford stats from the Roanoke Times.  Appomattox actually rushed for 282 yards on Radford and had 95 passing for a total of 378 yards.  Radford had 227 rushing yards and 55 passing for a total of 282 yards.  Appomattox had 2 fumbles lost and 2 interceptions for a total of 4 turnovers.  Radford had zero turnovers.  Turnovers are part of the game and it's clear they were a factor in this game looking at the stats.

Glad to know Coach Dixon can have his boys hang up their cleats and get out their tennis shoes for basketball. Yep just go ahead and pencil in Chillhowie to represent the West!

Great post. Cant leave Galax out of the discussion and assume Chilhowie wins. I did that when the Riverheads topic come up and I apologize. Galax has been there and done that and Galax did beat the team Graham is about to travel to that toppled Appo. Also, Galax in a scrimmage (just a scrimmage), but Galax played My. Airy, NC, to a draw this year early on and Mt. Airy is the 1 seed in the single A (Single A Big) playoffs and lost the state title last year and will likely play for it again. Chilhowie hasn't faced a team the caliber of the maroon tide. I pick Chilhowie, but wouldn't be surprised much if Galax got the W. Often what stands in the way of Galax is Galax. When Galax gets out of Galax's way, they usually do very well.

Graham just played to the competition.  Play this game 15 times Graham wins it 14 of them.  There is always that 1 outlier.  Like Duke losing to the zags in Maui invitational.  Gonzaga better cherish the win because Williamson is just that type of player/leader it won't happen again.

I think Duke wins the title, but.......Gonzaga was without it's guard and best player against Duke and had a 14 point lead at one point.  The one issue with a young team like that is the ability to play defense for 40 minutes.  Duke played for 10.  Can they play for 40?

Who has actually seen East Rockingham play?  Lots went and saw Appomattox/Radford.  Let’s here from someone who’s seen East Rock.

Have seen em on Facebook against Riverheads.  That game was streamed by a Riverheads fan.  Contrary to what you may have heard, East Rockingham absolutely does not have the athletes of Graham.  It's not even close.  They do have a very solid offensive and defensive line.  They are a team that is ahead of the rest on the offensive coaching curve.  They run a wide open offense with tons of QB read option and screens.  Their offense would remind you of a Washington State type offense at the High School level.  They fool the opponent and depending on the defensive set, the play is called or changed at the line of scrimmage every time.  They get a lead and teams try to play catch up and get taken out of their offense.  They are very, very good, but they are not more talented than Graham.  Graham is also bigger on the line, but from an offensive coaching perspective, they are as good or better than any Virginia 2A team.  I know Goochland is very well coached and physical and loves to run the ball.  Don't be shocked when you are looking at scores and Goochland and East Rockingham are in a dogfight mid way through the third quarter where Goochland gashes them with runs and ball control offense, and a much better defense than what East Rockingham has faced this season including Riverheads.

  7. Don't be surprised if Goochland beats East Rockingham.  East Rockingham beat a good Riverheads team, but don't be fooled by that area.  Their schedule isn't as tough as many think.  Central Woodstock, Clark County, RE Lee, Luray and those schools are not a better caliber than Goochland.  It's a common thing where one of those 2A schools out there puts up big numbers each year, be it Clarke, Central, Stuarts Draft or Wilson Memorial in the past, only to not win it.  When a Region C school like Radford, Giles, Glenvar, Appo, or Gretna puts up big number in the regular season, play close attention to it because they are going to be dangerous.  When a Region B school puts up big numbers, I pay attention, but I just don't take it as serious.  I've seen it to many times. Goochland in Region A has 2 titles in the past 12 years.  Never count out Region C.  That region with Radford, Appo, and the rest is tough and has won 5 titles in a row and 8 out of 11 at the 2A level.  The best two teams left may be in the West and whether it's Graham or Radford, both can beat either one in the East.

  8. I would add the Graham of 2000 or 2001. They were a very very solid team that lost the state title. Also, the Richlands of 2010 was very very dominant and got robbed by a flurry of flags against a Poquoson team they were heavily favored in

98 PV crushes 2016 Appo. More D1 players, better D1 players, and stronger at the line.

Those late mid-late 90s PV teams were fun to watch. They were just wicked good in all phases of the game. The talent level was alarmingly Abnormal for SWVA teams.

I'm putting 2016 Appo as 1-2 tds better than any GC, PV, Giles, or Richlands team.. that Appo team was truly special!

The 1980ish Giles team was incredible and the Gate City of 74 is the best AA (Double A back then)team in the history of Southwestern VA and arguably, the state of Virginia. They were that dominant. PV of 97 would have given Appo of 16 all they could handle and then some

Great list. I'm a little surprised that Graham and Radford are only 4 games above .500. At any rate, it's amazing that a region has that many teams above .500 in playoff competition, and 13 different state champions.....

What stands out to me on that list is Gate City, PV, and Appy. PV played 64 playoff games and Appy played 59 up until 2010. What if they were still around through 2017? Those total playoff games would be much higher.  Gate City has a whopping played 84 playoff games. And Giles with 77. All 4 of those are impressive to me.

  12. I think PH keeps it at around 20 points in margin. Chilhowie is solid with great players and they are well coached. I've seen both this year. I think PH is the best coached football team I've seen this year. Just watching in person, they don't have the athletes or skill sets that blow you away, but they seem to be the kind of team that's 10-14 points better each game then what they should be because of their coaching. But, Chilhowie is also well coached and has more skills. Chilhowie 41-21.

  13. Graham's D is a huge factor in their improvement. The D. Ends have shown incredible improvement since game 1 when Bluefield gashed em.  The D. Tackles held their own against Bluefield. I would like Coach Palmer to have Cam go where Taylor H goes when Graham is on D  For the Blues to pull the upset, it will require Taylor H to have a monumental offensive performance. The D1/FBS cornerback-Cam can decrease the odds of that happening as Richlands will put it in the air far more times then in game 1.

  14. Just listening to this one on Kicks Country.   It sounds like Graham has left 10-14 pts on the field.  It's 28-7, but it feels like 42-7 as I'm not sure Graham has punted yet?  Crazy stuff as guys from Graham running in open field and then fumblin/getting stripped after 30 yds gains or guys fumbling inside the 5 of Union, etc.  Turnovers part of game.  Credit Union for getting some turnovers.  I don't know the yardage for this game, but I would bet Graham has actually tripled Union in total yardage.
