V-Cats got a reaction from redtiger in SWVA Poll Week 7
Time again for this weeks SWVA Sports Top 10. After yet another impressive win, this time over WV 2A powerhouse Bluefield, Richlands continues to prove that their early season hiccup was just that. Meanwhile across the county, Tazewell's stock continues to drop, just in time for the Backyard Brawl. In other news, Northwood and Lee are still undefeated, and still haven't played anybody. And those darned Blue Buzzards in A-Town are making their first Top 10 appearance. Go crazy with discussion and don't forget to PM me next week for Week 8

    Giles (7) (5-0) 70
    Gate City (4-2) 58
    Richlands (4-2) 44

Talk about 2 teams that have over came adversity, Northwood and Marion both have managed to hold things together with a combined 11-1 record this year. Marion's one loss was to NW. Hats off to both teams for sticking together during tough times, and espically to the coaching staffs for their leadership and coaching. This shows that young student athletes can over come adversity with the right leadership and direction from wise coaches. Best of luck in the post season. Not bad guys, not bad at all! Be sure to take care of business Friday night NW. It's one game at a time. Great job guys.

    Bob,
Maybe you can sponser a kid from the Dominican Republic who just happens to throw 98 and plays shortstop..

One would think that VHS football would benefit from having a few TN players crossing State Street to get more playing time.  However, I am not aware of that happening with any frequency, if at all.  I know there have been a few "relocations" that have benefitted the VHS baseball program (and the relocated players).  But VHS football apparently remains unattractive for TN transfers.

They say confession is good for the soul. Well, I must confess that there was a time I checked this message board for local high school sports news (still do) and to read Leonard's Losers (I miss that, but do think these two have replaced it).  Yes there was a time that the two chirping birds got on my nerves.  But friends, today has been a challenging day.  What do I do when I need to escape?  I read this board because I know I am going to get a chuckle out of something.  Today was no different.  I read through this "amazing" ridiculous thread and literally laughed out loud.  I want to thank you Falconboy and Southy for amusing me.

All joking aside, everyone does know that the Southbound and his buddy never even attended AHS, right?  I just want to make sure that everyone knows that. I know that they add humor and give people something to write about but they never attended AHS....which may be part of the joke here and I don't realize that.

Being completely objective, I believe VHS has played progressively worse as the season has gone on. The team that hung close to Tazewell into the 4th is definitely not the same team we saw tonight, even if the competition level has raised

This must be Ryan's lucky week.  I am going to provide a little more free history since Jethro is still in the dark...

From 1914-1939, VHS had no mascot.  They were known as the "Fightin' Virginians".   The school colors were established as Orange and Black because those were unique in the area at the time.  The administration felt it unnecessary to select a mascot given the state of world affairs at the time.

At the beginning of the 1939 school year, the new principal felt a mascot was necessary.  Thought it might assist in building community support.  He ordered a contest be held to select a mascot.  The student body was evenly divided between "Bearcat" and "Tigers".  To decide the very close vote, a compromise was reached:  The image would be that of a Bengal Tiger while the mascot name would be Bearcat.   Few folks at that time had ever seen an image of a Bearcat so the logo was not really questioned by the community.  It became an inside joke that the mascot image was not in synch with the name.  The image officially appeared in 1940 as did the name "Bearcat".

In the late 1940's, a new administrator attempted to correct the mismatched mascot and logo.  He was roundly rebuked.  He wanted to replace the Tiger image with the image of a war aircraft known as the Bearcat.  He also attempted to change the name to Bristol High School.  The man obviously had no sense of humor and lasted only a short period.

Recently deceased US Senator George Warren is widely accredited with the original submission of "Bearcat".  He was a student/cheerleader at VHS during 1939.

I like the "inside joke" and hope the Bearcat image lasts a few more generations anyway!

Raven my man, I never left and I never go backwards.  Onward and upward I say!  And now as I exit this stage, I leave you with my interpretation of one of the great all-time quotes.  It is historical so maybe Ryan can work it into that 15 page essay:

"And so, lifting as we climb (the VHSL standings), onward and upward we go (to Euclid Avenue that is), struggling and striving (struggling to get over that THS spanking and striving for a modicum of dignity v. R-lands), and hoping that the buds and blossoms of our desires will burst into glorious fruition ere long (with TDs Friday night).  With courage, born of success achieved in the past (at least on the Diamond), with a keen sense of the responsibility which we shall continue to assume (should we ever beat R-lands again), we look forward to a future large with promise and hope (that we can keep a coach longer than 2 seasons).  Seeking no favors because of our color (Orange and Black), nor patronage because of our needs (district wins), we knock at the bar of justice (wanting to replay the last minute from our last meeting), asking for an equal chance (just use legal spikes)."

    'Til next time!

I don't know about that now.  Anyone that went through all the torture of games the past few years saw this coming.  I said after Chilhowie last year we were going to be a force this year.
