Carroll County girl (I believe it was Ervin, actually, but not 100% sure) and Honaker girl were both going for an inbounds pass and the Carroll County girl yanked the Honaker girl down by the ponytail.  Wasn't called a foul, just out of bounds, possession Carroll County.

Honaker fans went a little to the extreme on Facebook 1)because it wasn't called a foul, so they went mad on the refs and 2)thought the play by the Carroll County girl was dirty, decrying she should "lose her scholarship", "be banned for the season", etc. which is why I assume it was the Ervin girl.  I don't know what she looks like so that's why I don't know for sure it was her.

Have they never watched a girls basketball or soccer game before? That stuff happens all the time. All the time!!!

Was there any retribution for the ponytail grab that went viral a couple of weeks ago, that Honaker fans decried a little to the extreme for?

Oooh, I hadn't seen anything viral. I avoid social media so, I don't see that stuff. What did I miss?

I think the thing that waters it down is allowing so many teams in the playoffs.  I'm ok with 6 classificaitons, 5 may be better, but having so many teams in the playoffs waters it down imo.

I think the playoff situation is certainly a contributing factor but it's more than that.

Region 6A only has 11 schools while Region 6B has 19. Region 5B only has 10 schools. Class 5 only has 48 schools while Class 6 has 60. VHSL breaks down regions within Class 5 and Class 6 to pacify those schools that balk at having to travel 20 miles for a regional contest. It has nothing to do with balance and everything to do with those large schools expecting everyone to cater to them. If VHSL had a backbone and made a 5 Class system, broken down with even distribution of Regions, a lot of ths knucklehead stuff that takes place within the playoff format would solve itself. Schools like Freedom-Woodbridge would complain about having to travel 40 miles to Briar Woods for a regional battle but they will get over it. Now factor in Freedom-Woodbridge is 6B with 1,600 students and Briar Woods is 5D with 1,400 students, it makes even less sense.

A bit compared to VA which probably has 50+ schools in each class.

Virginia is watered down in my opinion. We should have at most, 5 classifications. Virginia has 317 schools playing football versus 125 in West Virginia. With only 125 schools, 4 classifications seems quite odd to me but then again, so does 6 classification with 317 schools so, what do I know?

  5. Floyd is similar in many ways to Fort Chiswell. They always seem to have an abundance of size and athleticism. Coach Beale was/is an all-time human being but I'm not sure how great a football coach he had been in recent years. Floyd certainly has a football coach now. If the Carroll News is to be believed, I'm not sure how Cromer could have been their second choice, but here we are.

One thing is for sure, Floyd set the rest of the Three Rivers on notice. The Buffalos comin.......

  6. South Carolina just enacted a rule for the upcoming season, schools are free to recruit and students can transfer out-of-season without penalty. However, any school receiving a student living outside the district boundaries must count that 1 student as 3 students for ADM purposes, whether that student plays a sport or not.

If VHSL were to adopt this unique system, LCA would most likely be Class 6.

It'll be tough given the competition.

I think Troy Henderson is still at Lancaster. He played against Northampton.

If he's still at Lancaster, they have to be the overwhelming favorites. I was lead to believe he transferred to John Marshall.

Would you be shocked to see either Auburn or Lancaster win it all? Is Millions still at Auburn?

Personally, I think those 3 (Auburn Lancaster, GW) have to be the betting favorites. GW and Auburn both return the majority of their teams from last season. They played 6 times last year with GW winning 4 of those. George Wythe only has two seniors on the roster with one of those only playing a few minutes a night.

Terry Millirons is the head coach at Auburn. Nick Millirons is the star senior.

  9. The 1994 game was the second week of the regular season, not a playoff game. I was home visiting for a few weeks and went to the game with some friends. I don't remember much about the game other than thinking I would like to see Thomas Jones and Raypheal Milton play against each other.

Radford played my brothers Grayson team the following week. Radford finished that season 8-3 with 2 loses to Giles.

  10. I’m not sure how feasible a second high school would be in Carroll County. The issue is more terrain than anything else. Cana sits at an elevation bellow 900 feet. Hillsville sits in something of a bowl near 2,800 feet with the surrounding countryside well above 3,000 feet.

With Lovers Leap Mountain bordering Patrick County to the east, Lambsburg Mountain to the southwest, and Fancy Gap Mountain to the southeast, those 2,000 plus foot drops are treacherous.

Besides, I’m certain Carroll County couldn’t afford the additional staff a second high school would necessitate.

Best wishes to Greer.  Also, big sack move in my opinion coming home to Carroll County which sounds like for the reasons you pointed out a tough place to win. I hope he can get them going.  Carroll needs to get those kids back from Cana and keep them at home instead of Mt. Airy because there's a lot of country hams in Cana, and they are probably losing some big boys along the line of scrimmage to Mt. Airy.

Kid from Cana scored the last touchdown for Mount Airy in the state championship game.

How good is Radford as a program? It seems they have been consistently good the last several years. They have some advantages with the local economy and the student body close to the school since it’s a city school. Has it been simply a good run of athletes or do they continue to produce talent. They have had exceptional talent at QB and skill positions.

I saw the JV's play back in September. They have some serious talent coming up. I didn't see another Landon Clark but quite a few outstanding athletes.

I really like #6 for Galax....not very big but tough and plays hard.  He will need 10-12 touches.  Also Galax will need to get more from QB...he will need to be able to pull the ball and run 4-5 times a game to open things up?  They will be very solid on defense and in the kicking game.

I believe #8 will be the feature back next season splitting time with #1. Also #5 needs more touches. He's an athlete that has played the past 3 or 4 weeks with a slipped disc in his lower back. For as small as #6 is, he's as tough as a pine knot. I think losing #9 might force Galax to spread the ball around much more than they have the past 2 seasons. Which would be a good thing overall.

Watch yourself Dan, you don’t disrespect the Spartan horn. I will come to Pounding Mill and blow it outside your house all hours of the night.

It's stuff like the train horn that make high school football awesome and unique. I'll chip in gas money to haul that thing to Galax next fall.
