  1. Grayson at Glenvar has been moved to 6 pm Wednesday.
  2. The Army Corp of Engineers straightened and deepened Chestnut Creek through Galax many years ago. The end result helped create Felts Park. I can't recall it ever flooding outside of its stream banks. The dozens of small little tributaries feeding into Chestnut Creek are a very different story. Most have been, at least in part, piped and covered up over the past 50 to 60 years. They flood with a minimal amount of rainfall. When we get heavy rains, they blanket much of the area with up to a foot of water. I've never seen it get as bad as what we had Saturday though. But 6 inches of rain in 3 hours isn't really something anyone can prepare for either.

  4. Yes it is. The video was taken early Sunday morning (around 2am) by deputy chief James Cox of the Galax Police Department. Depending on where you are in the surrounding area, Galax got between 6 and 8 inches of rain between 11 pm and 2 am. More pictures can be found on the Galax Fire Department Facebook page (link provided). https://www.facebook.com/GalaxFireDepartment/ To answer your second question, a small tributary to Chestnut Creek has been notorious in recent years. Portions of the tributary have been piped to provide expanded land for residential neighborhoods, streets and playgrounds. Those pipes are too small for the amount of flow and are beginning to fail due to age and neglect. On Google Maps, look at Ernie Pyle Street, down Parkwood to McArthur and Swanson, where it goes beneath the elementary school playground. The playground was under more than 2 feet of water during this storm. That wall of water washed out the fencing for the playground, moved a stack of lumber from Blevins Building Supply (the business in the original video above) lumber yard into the back of the store. The water proceeded to rip apart the store and come out the other side where it crossed Main Street and down Bartlett Street. At that point, it ripped through Vaughan Bassett Furniture and out into Chestnut Creek. This is Swanson Street with a clear view of the tributary. https://www.google.com/maps/@36.6564921,-80.9267419,3a,60y,239.66h,70.34t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sdaa7GNApu4fC7xT3n7_nSQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 This is Swanson Street during the flooding looking in the same direction as the Maps Street View link.
  5. The community in and around Galax is already recovering from between 6 and 8 inches of rain in a 3 hour period on Saturday night. Several streets remain closed and likely will be until extensive damage can be repaired. I hope this thing shifts direction soon and heads back out to sea!
  6. Cade Ashworth - Galax. 13 tackles, 4 for loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 30 yards on the fumble return. And he didn’t play the 4th quarter of a 30-0 game!
  7. Good people doing good things in the community. I don’t know Mr. Thompson but he seems to be beloved in the Carroll community. Speedy recovery sir!
  8. Galax 17. Carroll 0 Halftime
  9. I played for Cormany at Grayson. Your opening statement couldn’t be more factual!
  10. I was talking to a friend about this earlier. He is an AD at another school in that general area. He said parents were pulling their kids from practice and making them quit because the coach was being too hard on them. If that's the case, the parents will get what they deserve watching the program go back to being an afterthought. Too bad for the kids though. The past couple of seasons have shown what that school can do with the right attitude and motivation. Dixon can be a bit much at times and his ego is the size of Texas. Show me someone with his successful track record, both as a coach and player, that isn't. But stories like this make me appreciate how the Galax community has bought into his philosophy and have supported the program as much as possible. After all, Galax and Staunton River have virtually the same athletic history prior to Dixon and Poston. Which is none at all!
  11. I understand the point you were making. FSU’s offense was downright offensive! I think VT may be a shade better than most expected. The question is, can the offense be a more consistent than it has been for the past two seasons? It didn’t look that way a lot of the night Monday.

  13. I wouldn't say FSU "gashed VT's defense", especially in the running game. FSU finished with 94 yards on 28 carries with 85 coming on one play. The other 27 carries resulted in 9 yards. With that said, VT should have had several more scores. VT made its fair share of mental mistakes resulting in points being taken off the board. As an unbiased observer married into a Hokie family, I'm not sold on Jackson as a quality QB either. He is inaccurate and makes bad decisions with the football at times. He made several bad decisions last night but FSU was ill-prepared to take advantage of them. A better prepared opponent would have capitalized on those mistakes. I agree that FSU wasn't prepared for this game but for anyone who watched Oregon last season, that seems to be a common theme for Taggert. I questioned FSU choice in replacement for Jimbo when they announced Taggert. I question it more-so now!

  15. Cubs are helping them by beating them Thursday night and losing to the Phillies last night.
  16. Gage Cooke also had 3 TD passes. One each to Lundy, Dickson and Barnes.
  17. Galax JV’s close it out. Galax 41 Radford 21 Final
  18. Gage Cook to Kolby Barnes from 30 yards out. Galax 41 Radford 14 Almost certain Radford has negative yardage on 4 second half possessions.
  19. Galax 34 Radford 14 The 9 man Galax rotation on the line is dominating. Preleau is an exceptional athlete and the best player on the field. Galax is dominant everywhere else. Still too many drive killing penalties for Galax though.
  20. Blake Brown with another score. Galax 31 Radford 14 8:03 left in the 3rd
  21. Halftime in Radford. Galax leads 17-14
  22. This score surprises me! Good for Turner
  23. Radford goes 51 yards on 3 plays aided by a 40 yard pass play. Preleau takes it in from 9 yards out. Gage Cooke to Matt Lundy for an 81 yard TD on the first play from scrimmage. Galax 17 Radford 14
  24. Gage Cooke with an 80 yard TD pass to Landon Dickson. Galax up 10-7 with 11:49 left in the half.
