I think the Bristol paper today mentioned that Va High had 61 players.

Sullivan Central has dropped out of the scrimmage with Battle on August 16.

I'm in.

Battle had 50 yesterday 9th thru 12th grade.

I have heard that Hess's father doesn't want him to play football this year because he wants him to concentrate on basketball. Don't know if there is any thruth to that of if Hess is playing football. Hess is a talent. He can help the ffootball team, but he probably does have a future in college basketball. I have heard that King University (DII) is very interested in him.

Was told by a John Battle player yesterday that they are going to a 7 on 7 tournament in Honaker on Thursday. He said there is supposed to be a "bunch" of teams there but he didn't know who else would be there other than Battle and Honaker.

I agree that Holston did look better than Battle but you have to take that with a grain of salt. Battle only had 3 varsity players there yesterday (and 2 of those will probably not start on offense although they will play a lot) and last years starting fullback played QB for about a third of the snaps while their JV QB took the rest of the snaps. Three of Battles starters (including their QB) were at a football camp at Mars Hill and 2 other starters were at Emory at a basketball camp. A sixth probable varsity starter was on vacation.

I don't know about scrimmages but I am pretty sure Battle will have a benefit game against Fort Chiswell (at Fort Chiswell) this year. I don't know the date.

Battle will be at the Marion event on June 25. It starts at 5:30. There will be 2 other teams there, but I don't know who they are. I would guess that Fort Chiswell will be one. They and Battle have been to this one the past couple of years. I think Holston has been there the past couple of years too.

The linebackers should be pretty solid. Harlow, Chapman, Blaylock and Stoots (all started at LB last year for multiple games) will all be back. The D-line will have one part time starter back (Sam Martin) and the DBs will have Matney back and Honaker played some there last year too. They have been having around 50 kids coming to conditioning. If Wright, Baker and company can develop some linemen on both sides of the ball, they have a chance to have a pretty good season again this year.

I have been getting the same thing that Thomas shows in his post. I sent a PM to Thomas from the Clinch Mountain message board and he suggested I Google swvasports and keep clicking on links until I found one that worked. That is what I did and it worked. Thanks Thomas!

Probably for points. By Virginias new alignment they will probably be a 3A team and they are usually pretty bad in football so with a win Tazewell would probably pick up a lot of points.

I wonder if the outcome would have been any different had the Reynolds girl from Wise not been injured. I watched the game on the internet and when she went out, Wise had a 4 point lead, when she came back in, I think Floyd was ahead by 10 or so. I don't think Wise scored (may have socred 2 I don't remember for sure) a point while she was out. They were pretty even before she went out anb after she went out. The big surge came while she was out. I think Floyd probably would have won anyway due to their depth, but it would have been interesting to see.

dukey, is that a hint? That will add depth for Battle if they are 2 of the 4 but Battle returns a first team all district player at fullback and an honarable mention all district player at QB.

I remember seeing the All West D2 squad in the Bristol Paper a week or so ago. I don't remember seeing the All West D1 squad.

In the Clinch Mountain District (boys), Gate City and Va High should be the top 2 but don't forget about Lebanon. They were very young last year (started 2 freshmen and a 3rd played a lot of minutes) and I think they only lost Justin Brown (I think that was his name). I think Battle will pull of an upset or two this year. It will take a while for the football players to get into basketball mode, but I wouldn't be surprised if they turn in to a pretty competitive team by the end of the season. I don't know much about Lee this year.
