So, the Blue Tornadoes drop to 0-3 in the SWD with a loss to Virginia High last night.

The way I understand it, the Mountain 7 District will get 4 Region D bids, Grayson County will get one leaving the SWD to get 3 bids.  The Richlands folks have been eerily quiet on the board, is it panic mode time yet for Richlands?

Below average coach + average talent = Richlands basketball.

They have played a cupcake schedule to get to 8-0 with wins against weak 1A opponents.

  2. We are virtually at the half way point in the season without much chatter on the boys side. Obviously GC is the front runner by a significant margin, but who is battling for 2nd? IMO Graham is probably the team but Union is making a decent case at possibly upsetting Graham when it counts. Anyone else have any input?

Also saw that Richlands lost to a weak Lebanon team giving Richlands it's first loss. Graham seems head and shoulders better than anyone in the old C39.

Region D teams consist of: GC, Central, Lee, Union, Ridgeview, Abingdon, Va High, John Battle, Lebanon, Richlands, Tazewell, Graham, Marion, (Grayson Co? or are they Region C?)

Richlands needs a lil love there 8-0 and playing pretty good ball.

For the record... Richlands is 8-0 and has played all 1A, struggling, schools. It is one thing to be 8-0 with a GC style schedule and another to be 8-0 and bash up on a bunch of schools with losing records.

Ha!  You've never been to a Ridgeview game where most folks leave after the girls game.

@champ Ridgeview lost twice last week in Kentucky, so to be fair, they probably don't belong in the top 3 at the moment.  Very well could lose their third straight tomorrow night at Abingdon.  Since Central won a tournament in Orlando, and Abingdon looks to be pretty dominant, I think they should be 1st and 2nd at the moment hands down.

I actually have... among several other teams. There is a following but lets be honest. Ridgeview/Central have had top 1-2 teams in C40 for a few years (plus GC) but their boys teams (minus GC) have been basement dwellers.

I was speaking more so about all the chat on this board about girls basketball...

  5. I like to look at what he did against the local teams and compare that to the next 13 games. He "Should/Could" average 40 points a game...

Give him some cushion when the postseason begins in case he has an off night by scoring 25 lol.

Factors that I think that play in are how far GC goes this year (obviously) and how much He/Vermillion pump the breaks against the local teams. Judging by what he did against Lee/Wise/TN High, I doubt there will be much pumping of the breaks though.

  6. He has 13 regular season games left. I assume that there will be a district tournament (3 games)? and a Region(3-4 games) tournament, quaterfinal, semi final, and state final...

Rough math says he has a max of 23 games left. He needs 34 points a game to achieve this. Of course, a lot of variables go into this. It is possible but doubtful I think.

Lol. You haven't raised 5 daughters who all played basketball. Sorry if I'm overboard with the girls post. I love watching them. Boys are far more athletic but girls play as a team so much better. It's a better team game to watch. IMO

i usually catch a boys game once every two weeks or so

    To each their own.

I realize this is basketball and strange things happen but once again a team I have rated high goes down

Galax lost tonight to a Pulaski County team that I hear is not extremely good.

where did the Galax team I watched go ?

Maybe they just played reallllllly good that night?

    Impressive win for ES.

Seems like this would be a hard game to use to judge either team. 47 foul shot attempts to Unions 15. Sounds like a referee controlled game. It’ll be interesting to see the outcome of their next game.

Or maybe Union just fouled a lot?

2 from Union was selected. James and Braxton Zirkle . Zirkle made 2nd team All State and Jeb Stidham made 1st team All State.  How does a guy make 1st team All State 2 years in a row and get passed by to play in the Vhsl game? Something is not right with this picture. What is the process that is used to pick who does and does not play in Vhsl games?

Fairly positive it is off coaches nomination. They roughly get the nomination paper around halfway through the season, fill the form out with selected all-star players and send it into the VHSL. From there, a committee (I assume) looks at the players, stats, etc., and makes their decision. I would assume Turner put several players on the nomination form he thought could make it.  I also think there is a limit of how many a team can nominate too.

Union was well represented which is great! They got 2 players into an All Star game. Be grateful! A lot of teams went without representation. Sounds like the kid was worthy, however.

I don't think that's true as a general rule, only the last couple years bc of McClung and to a lesser extent Ervin. A team led by Ervin may still be best in the district but it wouldn't be easy. McClung is a special talent, it's unreasonable to expect GC to have this type of team on the average.

What general rule are you speaking of?

That’s why GC does it. Good test coming next Tuesday vs Daniel Boone. Not sure if Daniel Boone is as tough as last season. But 2 of their 3 losses are against 2 top teams in TN in Unicoi Co and Mo East. Then the other loss is to rival David Crockett. GC will have to play 4 quarters come Tuesday.

I realize this as does most posters with a brain on this forum. C40 boys cannot match up with GC at all. GC will beat Union by 20+ and they are probably the 2nd best team come mid Feb. I know Vermillion is to beef the schedule up but the thing is come late January-early Feb, competition is weak and that is when teams should be preparing to peak. I see they are playing Cleveland Tennessee (i know nothing about them but assume they are good?) and Pulaski Co late in the season. Good move IMO. GC cannot help what conference/district they are in. What they can help is out of conference schedule and I think they did a magnificent job getting quality competition to play.

I hope GC finally gets to hoist the trophy in Richmond in March!
