Student Behavior at RHS/THS game

I just came from the Richlands Tazewell game -- most people think I am a Tazewell fan, but truth be known I am a RHS graduate.

I remember when I was in school, Woodrow and Tom Hagy were the people in charge -- we had some rowdy fans -- most of the real out of hand ones were the 'old adults', [40+ years -- remember I was only 17 or so].

Tonight, however the RHS student section crossed over the line a couple of times. According to VHSL rules and guidelines -- fan support, signs or cheers cannot be demeaning to members of the opposite team -- tonight the student section chanted cheers that targeted Tazewell Athletes -- The called names and made mocking statements --

This all really bothered me, but they really crossed the line at the end of the game -- when Richlands had lost -- they pulled their shirts off and their upper bodies were painted blue with 27-28 on them -- This was totally inappropriate given the current situation. They won the Region IV game -- everyone knows how -- or at least knows the final play of the game -- the real reason I feel is that Tazewell was out coached --

Not one time during their chants -- even taunting the officials when they walked into the locker room at half time - did their principal come over and say -- "hey guys - I am glad you want to support your team, but remember to support your team and not attack the other." Nor did she say, " You represent RHS -- remember your behavior."

This bothers me so much because I am a RHS graduate -- I get upset when people talk about Richlands fans but in truth I know their right.

I remember when I was in high school -- our basketball team was playing at the Deadman Center in Radford in a district/region game [can't remember -- too many years ago] Anyway, the lady that was singing the Star Spangled Banner -- wasn't the greatest -- two RHS cheerleaders laughed under their breathe during her performance -- from no where Woodrow came out of the crowd escorted these two to the bus -- and on Monday when they returned to school they had 3 days in school during which time they were required to write letters of apology to everyone -- their parents, the school board members, the other teams coach, principal, the officials at Radford U and the lady -- they remember this -- and so do I

I just wonder do these student athletes have any respect for authority -- we all have times that we don't agree with officials -- there is always players on our team and others that we don't always like -- but do we attack and belittle them --

RHS' principal was at the game -- she never budged from her seat. I don't feel that she or the parents of these kids are doing them the service that they deserve --

Richlands is loaded up with many talented athletes they should learn to be appropriate fans and support their own without these attacks -- if they did they would at the very least appear more intelligent --

The same 'old guys' that were in the gym when I was in school still set in the same seats -- and they just laugh at the student section -- I don't find it cute or amusing and many others do not as well.

It's nothing new. When I played "Rife's Raiders" were all over us during pregame and during the game....A few of the players from Grundy knew some of the RHS students and it made for some fun taunts and chants throughout the games....Its all in fun and should motivate the players if anything. When you're on the court you shouldnt be hearing what is in the stands anyway.

It is like that everywhere. Student sections everywhere talk trash to opposing teams, cheerleaders, fans, etc. There are definitely some things said that are uncalled for but it happens. Don't get too mad over it because it really is no big deal and, after all, expected in most cases.

Grundy10 was terrified of the Rife's Raiders when he played. He would go home and cry himself to sleep at every game againist Richlands lol

It is that way at most schools. The reason being is that nobody wants to step on anyone's toes, by trying calm down or correct the students. there is a difference in fun and being disrespectful.

If your on a varsity team you should be smart enough to not listen. Im pretty sure ive got it worse than some from "McGhee's Mafia" or whatever and i must say i do listen, but just because it gives me a good laugh haha.

when our guys played east mont last year... the east mont fans made mcghees mafia look like innocent spectators... ill admit that our crowd of 50 or so students were loud and obnoxious.. but these guys shot us the finger, screamed profanity at us.. and then at the end of the game when we interupted there "EAST- WHAT? EAST-MONT!" with our own rendition of "RICH-WHAT? RICH-MOND!" there principal came and jumped on us.. only to be scared back across the floor by our varsity cheerleading coach... haha but i guess its all in fun but personally attacking people is out of hand..

When i was at RHS in late 80's early 90's to play basketball anywhere in swva you had better been prepared & had a set of nuts. most places today are very mild considered to years ago. From the RHS section Friday night those things are mild compared to the old days of tom rife.

yes 8-ball by the way our AD i noticed was over there a few times at the game Friday Night. Whats wrong w/ a little body paint, oh wait this is basketball we are walking about!

You are so right 8ball. I remember the days when Woodrow Mullins was there at every football and basketball game, and if RHS students got out of hand, he would personally escort them to the bus or if at home he would escort them off of school property. I'm afraid you might have a lawsuit on your hands if you tried to do that in today's lawsuit-happy world.

i see where 8ball is coming from during our game at richlands they did a lot of stuff that i was surprised they can do at school they did the "pushit" chant on a bad call which really it sounds like every single one of them aren't saying pushit lol, umm they have another one i had never heard before "H-O-M-O you can't make a free throw." there were other things probably but i agree with tax it did give me a good laugh. One thing i didn't think was too funny was after the game someone told me they were chanting take your shirt off referring to one of the carroll girl varsity players who was wearing a cut off sleevless shirt that maybe was showing a little bit, i think they should just concentrate on the game and make fun of the players because saying something like that to a girl crossed the line i think.

The person in charge at Richlands High School has not been to a game all year. I have seen the asst. principal and athletic director. I believe a school board member was really upset during the Carroll County game. I don't think they have been in school since that game.

Is it really a big deal? They're just kids having fun at a basketball game. I like the chants. Especially when you have opposing student sections going back and forth. Sometimes I think we forget who these games are for.

For the record they were chanting "Put A Shirt On" because the girl was nearly topless standing in the stands.

LOOK :) i'm in the mafia and nothing we say is really that bad sure some of the chants take shots at the other players but our goal is to affect the game as much as possible i know that our players really like having the mafia supporting them and being crazy the mafia exists for the sole purpose of raising cain whether richlands wins or loses is an after thought but like the mafia shirts say it's nothing personal...it's just good business we don't dislike any of the opposing players we just want to get in their heads and it many times it works we're just there to have fun and if u watch us we definitely do have alot of fun the other night after the game i went and congratulated several of the tazewell players and they know that we don't mean anything we say its all in good fun if look at student sections around the country in high schools and colleges they like to be crazy and mess with the opposing team as well most of the mafia's material comes from those student sections we do not have a malicious intent we just want to raise cain and make some high school memories and so far we have made quite a few so just relax and let some kids have some fun while they're in high school if you think back on your high school memories i'm sure you will find some times when you were just trying to have fun and raise some cain and by the way we are the only student section you will see singing the national anthem oh wait there is no other student sections in southwest virginia especially one like the mafia

I haven't seen any besides the Mafia at RHS. Those guys are fun to watch and the games wouldnt be the same without them. The student section has been strong at RHS since the late and great Rife's Raiders. Richlands' teams may not be the best but their student section certainly is. So keep talking smack about them because you know what, THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU because you are scared that there fearless leader will hunt you down and gangbang you.

I agree, and the original complaint amounts to much ado about nothing IMO.

Back in the day (circa 1985-1989), the denizens of the Krazy Korner -- as we described ourselves -- were proud of the fact that we were able to intimidate opposing teams at RMS and many times on the road as well.

In fact, I recall a definitive display of "student behavior" at Tazewell one year in which a certain Bulldog cager offered us the one-fingered salute during a free throw.

If anything, this generation of kids probably behaves better than we did by virtue of the fact that the lighting is much better at RMS now. Rock on, Mafia.

The correct spelling of "intimidate" is crucial to the lucidity of this post
