the_general 13 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 LOL if it stopped raining now they would have the sprinklers going from now till game time :) Â You're probably right on que. I played on one of those hosed down fields back in the 80's at Marion. It hadn't rain for several days and when we stepped on the field it was a bloody swamp. By the way, Richlands lost that game. Gizmo777 10 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 Turnovers were the key last year. Richlands comitted two in first half which in essence gave Gate City thier points. Also Gate City's ability to run the ball up middle well enough in second half to keep Richlands off field. The Richlands team has gotton much bigger up frount on deffense (just a year older) and with the depth of linebackers that Richlands developed over last season they should be able to make Gate City go outside some. If Richlands can win turnover battle or keep it even then they should win with more ballanced offense. A muddy field can effect the turnover battle, its up to the backs who give the best effort to secure the pigskin then. I will take Richlands 19-13. Good luck to both teams from the injury standpoint. I am like everyone else about what a good game this is for the first of the season but they will have time to heal injuries if any happen. If they played late in the season then this would not be the case. These two teams will probably represent southwest virginia come playoff time and I hope they both go all the way. Observer77 12 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 Aren't turnovers part of football? Aren't they part of most team sports? Is it that difficult for some to say that last year Gate City won and Richlands lost? Â If you're still wanting to bring up turnovers, look back to how the Blue Tornado scored on the Devils (from the BDT article) "Richlands put the first touchdown of the season on the scoreboard following a forced turnover by the Tornado defense. The Blues recovered a Gate City fumble at the Blue Devils 26-yard line and converted the gift into a touchdown in four plays." Â I hate to tell you, it goes both ways. Gizmo777 10 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 I agree that turnovers are a big part of all football games and it does go both ways. Richlands did lose the turnover battle last year and did lose the game as well. I still believe that if the game this year is even in turnovers that Richlands will win in a close game. Turnovers are not a product of luck but of desire and focus. Gate City had more of each last year. You appear to have you're panties in a bunch by you're comments. Bad day or just crappy life. Observer77 12 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 Bad day or crappy life? HAHA - hate to inform you neither actually - it just seems most here want to discredit Gate City's win last year in whatever manner suits them (turnovers, early in the season, too hot out, too windy, no yard sale to speak of over the P.A. system during breaks in the game - whatever works best) & pound their collective chests about how the Devils don't stand a chance come August 27th. I guess you could say it just gets old after a while listening to the same old diatribe. Who knows, maybe Richlands will come down and put a spanking on Gate City - it could go the other way just as easily though.

I hate to jump in the middle of this.....but , I don't think anybody on here discredits Gate City's win. Talking about turnovers is part of the game as you mentioned. Myself and just about every Richlands fan I know have a lot of respect for the blue devil program ! I don't think your'll find any post that say anything negative about them from us ( blues fans ) on last years game or any game they've played against them. As far as people saying that they don't have a chance in this years game, I think a lot of the post say that they think Richlands will win but most also say that it will be a close game and turnovers may just make the difference. I'll take a win by causing turnovers in a sec. There maybe 1 or 2 that think it will be by more than 1 TD but that's about it. It's also not just Richlands fans making those predictions. Calm down, everybody knows what a great program GC has and what a great game this is gonna be. Just enjoy it !
Gizmo777 10 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 I sure did not mean to take away from the Gate City win last year at all and don't think I did. I played ball in high school and I know that winning the turnover battle is about desire and discipline. These are the best two attributes you can give a football player so I thought I was actually giving them a compliment. I have nothing but respect for the Gate City football program (Gate City has carried the torch for Southwset Virginia many years on thier own) and believe that the teams are very close this year as well. I hope that whoever wins that both teams can take it deep into the playoffs this year. Go Southwest Virginia.

Bigrhsfan 884 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 After last night I would say RT. 71 will be a busy road come Friday evening. Â Could be one of if not the biggest crowds of the year ! Both teams have large followings anyway, but this game is gonna be something else ! You'll have people that are not fans of both teams that will want to watch this game, especially is their team if open that week. Better get there early ! GrahamPG44 11 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 We scrimmaged GC last night and they got one kid with a brace or a cast on his arm playing outside linebacker or maybe corner. but i will tell you what that kid could play! Lance 228 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 I'm going to take Richlands by 14+ on this one...I don't think it's going to even be close after watching GC twice last night...seems to me that they are down in size and have problems in the secondary...Richlands is loaded and have both size and speed...if they don't make mental mistakes and shoot themselves in the foot, they should have their way with GC...I'm guessing they also would like to make up for last year a little bit. I expect this to be a hard hitting back n forth ballgame. I think the game could come down to how well Gate city is able to cover all the blues receivers and the blues line giving the QB's time to throw. I think Richlands ability to run the ball against them will depend on how healthy Devon's hand is, but it shouldn't effect his defense. I can't really comment on the Devils offense since I haven't seen them this year, but they always have good hard running RB's. Don't know much about their QB as well, but I'm sure he's good. I also don't know anything about their ability to throw the ball. Anybody see anything last night as far as them throwing the ball ? Â #10 is the QB and he is good...he moves around well and makes good throws on the run...if I were Richlands I would be after him all night and make this kid be the one that has to beat you. Â #15 is the horse...stop him and you stop GC for the most part...he's big and fast and can catch the ball out of the backfield...they also ran him as QB in a wildcat type offense and he did very well...the kid is a gamer. For a good sized RB he cuts back very well and quickly...if Richlands gets a little overly excited when they chase him, he will stop and cutback on you and make you look silly. I can not stress how good this kid looks.

they are not one dimensional...just saying that's the kids you want to stop...i saw both games and they threw the ball a lot considering it's GC and you tend to think of them as more of a running team...they run the same 25 yard sideline fade pass Grundy runs 15 times a game...nothing your DB's have not seen...most of it was kinda like Carroll County's passing game....a lot of 8 to 15 yard stuff. Blues Man 48 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 Is # 15 for GC the Clark kid that played QB for them last year?
Beamerball 566 Report Share Posted August 21, 2010 (edited) GC's had some injuries/issues over the offseason that's hurt a little I think. One of their backs, Joseph Vaughn (#31), their fullback/linebacker, was injured (and had another issue) over the summer and is a little behind now according to some posts on the CMD board and from the preview in the Kingsport paper. Reported that he may not go both ways early on. Vaughn was GC's leading rush last year, over 1400 yards. One of their defensive backs who is also their kicker had been dealing with an injury too. Â #15 is Dusty Clark, he was the qb last year, rushed for just over 1000 yards. Â I think they have 8 returning starters on both sides this year.
