ChanteHokie1 10 Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 This week, I cannot wait until I go to my very first "Bluefield Beavers" football game. My cousin friend has enlightened me with some interesting stories such as back in the 2000's, a school called Weirton got in a huge fist fight involving Weirton's head football coach and one of his own players. One of my cousin's friends who he attends college with at Bluefield State from Beckley chatted that Bluefield or Graham used to greet visitors by throwing beer bottles, bricks, rocks, and what not. I could tell that he was exaggerating a little however I can recall a Catholic school in Pennsylvania doing that at a game I attended in Maryland. I have also heard stories from my cousin's friend that Bluefield used to trash other schools facilities after losing a game? Anyway, in spite of these rumors, I'm sure the Bluefield game will be a great game with great football, food, and fellowship. I cannot wait until Friday afternoon. frito gonzales 103 Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 Graham vs Beaver is a heated rivalry but nothing like what you have heard. We all live and work with each other and typically root for each other when it's not Graham vs Beaver. The tailgating is great. You have both schools all tailgating together for the most part as we all have close friends from both sides. It is the best high school game I've ever been to in my 44 years. Your Cousin's friend is high.... nothing like that has ever happened. Just a great game with a great crowd, more of a college atmosphere...as mentioned before. I think those guys are yanking your chain...

You are most likley going to be disappointed. ^^^^This^^^^ With the exception of the stupid Graham student with the G-star flag and the stupid Bluefield student with the Angry Beaver flag who attempt to parade the flag in front of the opponents' stands...both of which will be stopped by security, have their flags confiscated, and probably escorted to the exit... I've been to enough Bluefield and Graham games over the years that I can assure you that they're just rumors. I've never witnessed anything of that nature at any of the games I've been to. However the Weir incident took place after a state semi-final game in 2004 in which they lost to Bluefield 21-20 in overtime after been up 14-0 with 2:39 left in the game. Emotions escalated on the Weir sideline and it was Weir's assistant coach the head coaches son that had some words with some of their players and their fans in the stands. Things got so out of hand that police officers had to separate the assistant coach from one or two of the Weir players when the assistant coach took a swing at one of the officers and the assistant coach ended up on the ground in handcuffs. Sounds similar to the "clock gate" incident in Floyd County in 2000....when Floyd scored twice in the final 2 minutes to win that one..(after the clock malfunctioned and the refs kept time on the field)....then Giles fans rushed the field cussed the refs and one of them took a swing at a ref with a stadium seat.... I was in attendance at that game...and it was a wild scene... The Floyd players and fans were calm.......and I can assure you that the game clock did actually malfunction and there was no evil doings by anybody in the press box!! (ducking...)<ducks></ducks> Nope......sorry, wont see any of that stuff at Gate city either ! You'll see 2 programs that respect each other and play a good football game with a great atmosphere and a lot of fans on both sides ! He'll have to find some other place to find that kind of stuff...........he'll probably have to go back to Maryland to see that kind of fan behavior ! ThomasDenton 79 Report Share Posted August 21, 2012 Come to the VHS/JSB game in Bristol next week. If the fans at the game are as riled up as they are on the CMD forum, then you could see a lot of city and county folks get really redneck, lol. Bogeavers 10 Report Share Posted August 22, 2012 Although the times are very different at Bluefield now than they were when I was there, don't hate on the smaller bands. When I was there we may have been a 1/4 the size of the some of the schools we faced, but we were nearly always cleaner and much more controlled than others. I do know the guy that is teaching there now and I will hold my tongue with respect to him, but I am sure he is doing an alright job with the students. What does it really matter? The only people that EVER watch a halftime show at most Beaver games are the parents or fans who used to be in band. Nothing different than other high schools in the regard.
