Beamerball 566 Report Share Posted August 28, 2014 Some vow to fight VHSL re-districting that's costing taxpayers thousands http://www.wvec.com/backtoschool/Parents-districts-vow-to-fight-VHSL-re-districting-273059201.html "For example, Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk sent wrestlers to Salem, Virginia last season -- more than four hours away. Their state meet the season before was at Oscar Smith in Chesapeake." Oh my, 4 hours to a State meet...that's all? haha. Travel cost our smaller schools and rural communities more over the year, but oh, we're on the side no one cares about ;) Jason, redtiger, Bigrhsfan and 3 others

jblank 39 Report Share Posted August 29, 2014 They can shove it for all I care. My senior year, we qualified for the state golf tournament (I played Golf and Basketball) and we travelled to Hampton for the state tourney. That takes way more than 4 hrs, so they can shut up about having to travel.
trumpet1988 289 Report Share Posted August 29, 2014 Heh! Before both divisions in Classes A, AA, and AAA each started playing their games at places like Salem or wherever, the games used to be on neutral high school sites. Sometimes, Bullitt Park would host Powell Valley as well as Appalachia and Jonesville and Legion would host GC's. One year, Powell Valley had to go off of mainland VA to play the state championship. They won pretty handily too. If the western schools can travel, so can the eastern schools. starcityfootballfan, redtiger and jblank
GC_Quincy 582 Report Share Posted August 29, 2014 I've driven from Kingsport, TN to Norfolk, Richmond, Harrisonburg, and several trips to Lynchburg supporting Gate City over the years. I have no sympathy for them. redtiger, BlueRazor, jblank and 2 others
Beamerball 566 Author Report Share Posted August 29, 2014 They didn't seem to mind that we had teams in the same district that were 4 hours away for how many years???? (Grundy - Carroll County) You had the Grundy to Carroll County trips, and when Lee was in the Highlands at one point Bristol was the closest district game. For both Grundy and Lee, and also was a long for many others, those Regional trips to Dan River, Magna Vista, Martinsville, Tunstall, etc. were 5-6 hours away. redtiger
trumpet1988 289 Report Share Posted September 1, 2014 I would say what the eastern schools could do but that would be foul. I remember when Lee was D4. They made the playoffs multiple times. Per cougarfootball.net, they would play Carroll County and Martinsville the first two rounds. It looks like they played Blacksburg in 95 in the first round. Gate City and Graham would often play each other in the D3 playoffs. I think they played Magna Vista one year and I think Bassett. Point being, the West has traveled for years and years.
