  2. His site was the inspiration for me to start using excel to record my information. I had been using simple text documents and it was getting really burdensome. I was a complete novice at excel so I decided to call him for ideas as his phone number was on the site. Sadly his widow answered and it was just a few months after he had passed. I still have his spreadsheet as it was downloadable from the site but not any of the photos or articles.
  3. Will work on it as soon as I get a chance.
  4. The Booster's Club in Bluefield bought Merrill Gainer a car after the 1959 season and gave it to him at the football banquet.
  5. Just wanted to let everyone know that my website for my research is up and running (thanks Eugene). www.fourseasonsfootball.com
  6. I am pleased to present a website for my football research. It is not elaborate, You can see my spreadsheets for Virginia and West Virginia by clicking on the state outline map. www.fourseasonsfootball.com
  7. Graham. But my all time favorite is the 1972 Bluefield Helmet. It had a football with "We Believe" on the right side and a capital B with a Beaver standing through the B on the left side. Right side view is here: https://www.facebook.com/136172729808499/photos/a.1472748899484202.1073741890.136172729808499/1619581344800956/?type=3&theater Left side view is here: https://www.facebook.com/136172729808499/photos/a.1472748899484202.1073741890.136172729808499/1619581168134307/?type=3&theater
  8. I know it will never happen but if you want to make football safer take away the face mask from the helmet.
  9. Two new "discoveries" today. Going thru Marshall Johnson's notebooks I found at least 6 games from SW VA that I did not yet know about. Chilhowie, Lebanon, Rich Valley, Grundy, Honaker and Richlands. 1936 is a tough year for me because there seems to be little coverage of WV VA in Bluefield and Bristol papers. I don't know where Marshall Johnson found these scores and unfortunately his is no longer alive to tell.
  10. 01. Richlands / Union 02. Bluefield / Graham 03. Graham / Richlands 04. Ridgeview / Union 05. Va High / Richlands 06. Chilhowie / George Wythe 07. Bluefield / Richlands 08. Giles / Graham 09. Galax / Grayson County 10. Abingdon / Ridgeview Games vs. out of area opponents Bluefield / Lord Botetourt Union ./ Morristown West Richlands / Blacksburg Va High / Tenn High Galax / Glenvar
  11. 1. Bluefield - An amazing amount of returning letter men (especially in the trenches) 2. Union - much more talented than people think 3. Giles 4. Richlands 5. Virginia High 6. Graham 7. Marion 8. Ridgeview 9. Pulaski County 10. Abingdon (tie) 10. James Monroe (tie)
  12. Here is a link to last year's game. https://greatamericanrivalry.com/2017/08/25/bluefield-vs-graham-2017/
  13. The first one that I remember attending was the 1975 game. Also not pretty for Graham. 48-0.
  14. I asked AD Jones and he said the game was in Beckley again this year. IDK why.
  15. The Bluefield schedule on the VHSL list is also a mess. This is correct. 08-24 A Graham 08-31 H Princeton 09-14 H Greenbrier East 09-21 A Tazewell 09-28 A Richlands 10-05 A Pikeview 10-12 H Lord Botetourt 10-19 H Oak Hill 10-26 A James Monroe 11-02 A Woodrow Wilson
  16. This is the last year of Princeton's blacklist by the MSAC conference. Should be able to do a much better schedule next season.
  17. 6 away games. Bluefield, Parkersburg South, Musselman, Graham, Ripley, and Wheeling Park.
  18. Until 1957 when the new school on Cumberland Road was built the high school in Bluefield was officially Beaver Pond District High School or Beaver High for short. So officially the school was the Beaver Beavers. But it was never ever said that way. When the school was referenced it was called Beaver High. When the mascot was referenced they were called the Beavers. But for some reason when the were referenced together it was always the Bluefield Beavers. This was not uncommon in WV as many of the High Schools were originally named for the voting district within the county that they were located. Princeton High was originally East River High but dropped that name in the 1920's as did most other WV high schools but in Bluefield the name Beaver was never dropped until 1957. But that name was ingrained in the local minds so that it still exists today. Hence the Beaver/Graham or Graham/Beaver game.
  19. 0-7 and after the season he got the "You're Fired" treatment
  20. Kempsville High near Virginia Beach's coach in 1943 was Donald Trump!
  21. I have been fortunate enough to have access to Marshall Johnson's records at the VHSL in Charlottesville In going thru Marshall Johnson's records I Found the 1972 Ervinton / Twin Springs score. 0-0. I knew it was a tie but for 8 years had never found the score. Also In Marshall Johnson's records is a game for Richlands vs the Emory & Henry Freshmen in 1930. Richlands won 20-0. Much more to come as i decipher his handwriting and shorthand - aka Egyptian hieroglyphics. lol.
  22. A vast majority of TC Williams' students speak English as a second language. Football is not part of their culture. This can be said for many of the Fairfax, Alexandria, Arlington area. There are 33 5A/6A schools and a select few compete in football. Many football players transfer to schools like Westfield because football is not important to the student body at the their "home" school. Fairfax County population is 1.2 million, Arlington County (the smallest county in the country) 225,000, City of Alexandria population 150,000 with one high school.
  23. I am trying to learn how to put my football history spreadsheets online thru my own site. They are all in excel. I have recently learned that I can save each spreadsheet as a web page thru the "save as" function in excel. I have done this with all 398 Virginia spreadsheets. I have also created a spreadsheet that I call my "homepage". It contains in alphabetical rows and columns the 398 school names and I have created a hyperlink for each name to the appropriate web page saved on my computer. All of this is a little less than 9k. I have been googling free web hosting and domain names. Basically from what I can tell I can only get one of the two free provided a purchase the other from the same provider. My plan at first is to just publish the "home page" with the links to the other web pages. The internet link would take a person to the list of schools home page and then they could click on whatever school they want and it would then take them to that school's football history spreadsheet. Are there any persons out there with enough web knowledge to give me tips? I have been studying this for all of two days so I am definitely a web site creation beginner.
