SWVA Sports Trivia: Whose Stadium is Pictured Here?

The Mayor continues to build his lead! It's the Rich Valley Fairgrounds, the former home of the Rich Valley Steers until 1965. The only steers here these days are during the fair and rodeos. 1963; Note the barn in the background 1980s before the old HS was torn down 1947 team -
Today we look back, to the present, and forward to our great nation. A nation that is a lot like our family history. A collage of many personalities, much history. Some we smile at, are proud of, and some we ask "what were they thinking?" July is a special month for my family. My parents were married in a small Tennessee town. My family still has the ornate, beautifully written marriage certificate that hangs over a family fireplace. July is the month of my Dad's birth; in the mountains of North Carolina into a very large family. He wasn't a man with much schooling, but he was a great man who had to become a person of responsibility at a young age. Working in the Smokey Mountains as a young lad, carrying water and supplies to the loggers. His birth was meager, his life held much hardships, but he persevered to have in his lineage grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who accomplished much in their lives with education. This month also holds special meaning for me. It is my birth month as well. It is fitting, my Dad was the first to hold me, and I was the last to hold him as he took his final breath. My family was rooted deeply in the mountains of North Carolina. During the Civil War from history's pages no sides were taken, not Union or Confederate. The war came to the mountains and my ancestors paid the price of war with their lives. I honor them as Americans, not Union or Confederate who shed their blood. The redness of blood that was shed in the mountains of North Carolina by my ancestors, is signified by the red stripes of our flag. The blue portion, I believe, is the color representing the sadness and tears families have endured over the centuries, in the loss of love ones; ensuring this flag still holds strength and purpose to a higher calling then self. The white stripes are the symbol of the purity of hope from past generations, as a crown to their unselfish lives, a torch given to new generations to carry their honor and sacrifice. Be a beacon of light, "one nation under God. Indivisible with liberty and justice for all!!!

Does LMU have a jv team?

Kennard, Groseclose, Bailey, Williamson and the sophomore center, Smith that just transferred in at 6'3" 270 lbs. Pretty formidable indeed. Should average about 6'3" - 270-280 lbs. Tazewell's line will be big as well and rival Graham's in size, may even be a little bigger than Graham's. As far as D1 talent? They have the height and size. The Williamson kid has the best shot at D1 for them, I believe.

In that case skip it and start the season a week early have 2 bye weeks

Who are the top players for each team in the cumberland? Cove- Rollins and Roach Hodge Twin Springs- Ross and Kiser Eastside- Hamilton and Pannell Twalker- no clue castlewood- no clue Burton- no clue

Patrick Henry is on the verge of going back to being irrelevant for a while. They had a great run under 2 excellent coaches in Palmer and Padgett but their community support always seemed lacking to me. The home crowds at PH were small when I watched them play and that was when they were winning a lot of games. Could be a long time before they get to those seasons again.

yeah Grahams linemen are HUGE!

SWVA Sports Trivia: Whose Stadium is Pictured Here?
Liam McPoyle replied to Liam McPoyle's topic in SWVA Football
VHSL Helper nails it! -It's Blakely Stadium in Welch, former home of the Welch HS Maroon Wave. -It opened in 1927 and later used WPA funding for the grandstand and stonework. -The main tenant was the local coal company's baseball team, the Welch Miners. Its early teams were composed primarily of local Black miners. -Fire destroyed most of the grandstand in 1956, and the stadium was demolished in 1959. -The National Guard armory sits on the site today. -

An area HS played at this historic WV baseball stadium from the 1920s until 1955, when it then moved to its own stadium. Miners would play baseball here during their time away from working as a, uh, miner. The stadium's gone, and you'll find nothing left here but the Guard. - Last week

I believe Richlands visitors bleachers are still there. Last time i was there, they weren't in the best shape but better than what Graham has now!
