Did some research and they did add stripes. I love the all-black unis, but I think they overdid it on the helmet a touch.

This was a pretty competitive game last year until GW put it away in the fourth. Marion seems to have taken a step forward in talent, whereas GW may not be where they were at this time last year. Make no mistake, that Fort Chiswell loss only motivated the 'Roons, and both teams should be ready to play this week.

Thoughts? Predictions? Comments about field conditions?

Who would someone without bias rank higher, a team that won nine games last season, got to the second round of playoffs, and was noted for having one of the youngest teams in the state, or a team that posted a losing record, lost in the first round of playoffs, and has embarrassed themselves in 7-on-7s thus far? I do think that Gate City will be a solid group this year, but until they prove it, why would any one give them credit for being something more than they've demonstrated being?

Based on the criteria that GMan gave for a toxic program, Abingdon was in the exact same situation five years ago. Historically, I can't think of a school that has done less with more than Abingdon, and it was due to having a culture issue. I'm sure no one in Abingdon would like to admit it, but they didn't suddenly get good because they found a new coach with a better playbook. Reed's staff has changed the culture of Abingdon's football team and given them a hardnosed, winning mentality, something that had been lacking from the school for as long as I can remember.

Marion and Graham rejoining has really thrown off district scheduling for the SWD. Lots of home-away sequences are cattywampered as a result.
 
Good news for Richlands is that despite the schedule difficulty, with the exception of Union and the Beavs, most of the tougher games are at Ernie.

Those numbers look about right to me, SWVAFB. What's scariest about that is that it wasnt so long ago that Chilhowie was around three hundred students and Marion had around a thousand.
 
Studying Chilhowie in this rivalry is the perfect example of how to be successful as an underdog. Sure Marion typically has more raw talent, and they have won more games than they've lost in the series, but it's very rarely a lopsided score going either way. Even when Marion won 10 games a couple of years back and Chilhowie only won one, the game was closer than most of Marion's matchups with high ranked 2A teams that year. The Warriors always come into it with a "showing up your big brother" mentality, and the results speak for themselves. It's a very balanced rivalry.

Also, out of fairness, Paul Johnson calls his offense a "spread." However, I have no idea why the general populace of sportscasters can't understand that the triple option is a play, not an offensive philosophy. It's like calling an offset I-formation the "lead dive offense."
