Union coach Travis Turner had plenty of reasons to be happy with the performance of his experienced squad. The Bears rushed for 290 yards behind seniors Braxton Zirkle (18 carries, 91 yards) and Dakota Owens (12 carries, 1104 yards) and junior Avery Jenkins, who added 30 yards rushing.
Richlands managed just 26 total yards in the first half and never found a comfort zone. For the game, the Blues accumulated just 36 yards rushing and 61 yards passing with three interceptions.
“Union is very athletic, smart and well-coached, and they just whipped us,” Richlands coach Greg Mance said. “We couldn’t get first downs or sustain anything to give our defense a breather in the first half.”

    1. You can't blame the punter for that touchdown. The coaching staff put the offense out there to go for it on 4th Down and then changed their mind and tried to run the punt team on. Punter was rushed to get the snapped off to avoid a delay of game.
    2. If you take that punt return touchdown away then the score is still 10-0  in favor of union, and if you still give Richlands the touchdown they scored it would end up 10-7 - Union still wins.
    3. Union had 290 rushing yards & 30 passing yards. Richlands had 36 rushing yards and 61 passing yards. 320 > 97, right? It clearly seems that one offense was better than the other when one offense has more than 3x the yards.
James mitchell barely touched the ball on offense the first game. Less than 60 yards if I read right. Now he's touching the ball almost every play. You don't think that makes Union's offense better? They only had 30 yards passing the first game so losing him as a receiver doesn't seem like it would hurt that much.
You can spin it whatever way you want but the tale of the first matchup, as well as the entire season is that Union runs the ball at will and their defense doesn't allow yards or points & Richlands offense is incapable of putting enough points on the board to win when their defense allows more than two touchdowns. I don't see how anything has changed?

Union's D coordinator at the time couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag either. That certainly didn't help.
I would actually rather face a single wing this year than a passing attack like Richlands had last year.

All in good fun. I'd love to see someone walk into the UHS field house and suggest running the single wing to coach Turner. ?

It doesn't matter what they're running or not running. If it's not true, then what do you get by lying? You've either given away a potential secret, or you've blatantly lied for NO reason.

I'm not saying there not the best defense but the teams they've played are 40-60.  Two are 0-10 and a 1-9 and 2-8.  They do have 2 good wins though vs. Clarke Co. and riverheads.

Graham returned a fumbled for a touchdown & Bluefield returned an interception for a touchdown so that part is a wash. Both teams really only sustained one "good" drive each all game. The other time each was in scoring position Bluefied kicked a field goal and Graham fumbled on the 1 yard line with less than a minute to go. Graham "could've" won that game but I won't say "should've" because that was one of the most evenly matched games I've ever seen. Neither team showed an edge.
Both teams have improved since that game. I thought Bluefield might struggle against A couple teams early but there's no way I would want to play them now. I can't believe how much better they look now & I think it is all but a lock they play for the state championship. Graham with the QB play of Allen is a different team now and even with the loss of Reed I think they're a better team now than they were 11 weeks ago.
But to @UVAObserver's point, the Region D perception would be a lot different had Graham not handed the ball off to win the game to a player that hadn't touched the ball all game lol I'm not saying that Graham is better than Union but even with the 1 loss by Graham it came down to the last week of the season to determine the 1 seed. If graham beats Bluefield they're the #1 seed comfortably and would most likely be the favorites to win the region to the casual fan.

Yes!! Me too Union is drooling at the mouth waiting on Friday to get here. They are finally going into the playoffs healthy for once. I think there offense has been very good with James playing QB. What I saw the last couple of weeks with qualls throwing the ball around they are firing on all cylinders offensively and defensively.

Thats absolutely false. He likely would not be a Power 5 recruit, but he absolutely has that type of talent. You realize he hasn't been healthy in three years right? He's also not a big gym rat, if he was as dedicated as Mitchell or someone then yes he absolutely could play at a Liberty type program.
If size was all that mattered, those kids at Lee would be as good as Jeb. They are not.

I agree but this is why they play the game. You mentioned 2 players, are the other 9 of same caliber?  All it takes is one bad snap, one missed tackle,   there is is always a chance in high school football.

What does that have to do with this season? Both Graham and Union are capable of winning state titles this year.

We threw four passes agains y’all last game as best I remember. That’s with Bailey. We are a run team first. The thing is, ya never know who is gonna have the big night. Could be BZ, Owens, Jenkins, or Mitchell. Offense is averaging 36.3 per game while allowing 10.6 on defense. I’ve got a lot of respect for Richlands. The fact the NOBODY in the region wanted to play them in the playoffs speaks volume. This game will have a similar outcome. But a larger margin of victory for us I think. We won’t turn the ball over in the red zone two or three times again. Our last game wasn’t in question despite the score. This will be the same I think. But it’ll be a good ball game. Our boys better be focused and locked in for sure. I know Richlands will be.

Imo this game will not close as the last.   I think union offense is more lethal with James touching the ball every play.  Unions D is harassing people, if richlands is having a hard time scoring they will def struggle against Union.  What you gotta watch out for is this is a rivalry an the blues will be ready to play anything can happen so we will see.
