The jamboree idea is a good one. All the impediments you mentioned most likely wouldn't hinder a jamboree. Those are never packed out. With the improvements to the Park, I don't see a Riggs varsity game taking place again. I think that ship has sailed.

If you want to honor Powell Valley and Appalachia do some throw back uniforms, the kids and especially the parents and grandparents would love it and so would the uniform supplier.

They should play in Appy.  Bullit park isn't producing champions anymore.

That would be a logistical nightmare! No parking, no seating, restrooms, concessions, no grass hardly. if you want to play at Riggs sponsor a jamboree there during the preseason and call it even!

  4. Hi everybody, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Well the Blue Cross Bowl is here! There are nine games spread over three days starting Thursday at Noon at Finley Stadium on the campus of UT-Chattanooga.

Which site sells the mobile tickets for the Greeneville game? We're back in Kingsport and hope to go there on Friday and to BSG on Saturday. For that matter, who sells the VHSL tickets?

Gofan sells tickets on line. Go to the TSSAA web site under Playoff Headquarters and scroll down to the game you want to buy tickets for. I hope you get to both of the games should be fun.

  6. Friday is the semifinals of the TSSAA football playoffs, one Northeast Tennessee team remains. The Greeneville Greene Devils (11-0) hosts Upperman (13-0) at Burley Stadium at 7:00pm Friday and the winner gets winner of Pearl Cohn (13-0) and Haywood (11-2). The 4A bracket is stacked! Good Luck to Greeneville and if you need something to do and live in the Tri-Cities are make the short drive to Greeneville and catch the game!

  7. Football more than any sport is cyclical: teams go through bad cycles, even the best go through bad times and dynasties crumble back to reality. Lack of talent can't help a good coach and good talent can't overcome bad coaching! If you have no talent and bad coaching you get a total disaster! The wrong coach at the wrong time can set a program back years and in the instant gratification society we live in people aren't willing to basically push the reset button and try to good again in 5 years, but that is where this situation seems to at Richlands the school board, administration, boosters, fans and players need to take the 50,000 foot view and see the big picture or this cycle will never stop.. Like I posted above this situation is what happened at Gate City and Graham years ago! You can rebuild it but will everyone take the time and do it or will it mire in football purgatory for the next 10 years! Choose wisely my friends, Choose wisely!

Must have hit a nerve.  I don't have any contempt for churches that feed teams or for food itself.  That is a ridiculous notion and proof to me that you didn't absorb the totality of my comment.  It is about scheduling, rest and academics.  Practice takes up enough time, in my opinion, unless they are game day meals, this is not a good practice.  It would be safe to consider that your son's team was successful because it is one of the biggest schools in Tennessee.

No nerve struck with me and my son didn't play at DB!

Move away from the social experiment that Richlands Football has evolved into.  Ensure the entire coaching staff is teaching the fundamentals of football and employing team discipline.  The expectations placed on these kids from parents and the community are not realistic and have hurt the program.  The youth football program has suffered in the past few years which is also a factor.  The weekly schedule should be practice on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, walk-through practice on Thursday and game on Friday.  Players re-coop during the weekend.  I don't know if they still do this, but a couple of years ago, they had dinners during the week at different churches.  From a football standpoint, those were unnecessary.  There were too many things that promoted a "Miami Hurricanes" environment. The program needs to go back to what initially made Richlands competitive, physical play, a tough running game and stout defense.  Expectations?  One game at a time, minimal penalties, no turnovers, physical play.  You will win most of your games.

I don't think a Spaghetti Dinner from the United (then) Methodist has anything to do with success on the football field unless it's a five night a week thing! My son's team in Kingsport got fed once a week from the fine Christian Denominations around the northern fringes of Kingsport! They played great they lost 6 regular season games in four years. Food has nothing to do with it!

The title games are generally on one of the local stations out of the Tri-Cities and you get the whole series both days, or it may be 3 days. I want to say it is on the CW usually but do not hold me to that.

They broadcast all the games on the CW. The Division 2 games are Thursday November 30th starting at 11:00am, 3:00pm and 7:00pm. Friday Has 1A, 3A and 5A. Saturday 2A, 4A and 6A.

Key phrase, “If he wanted it”… I sort of doubt he does. Breeding might get it. I highly doubt it’s an outsider though.

This situation is almost identical to what happened at Gate City and I posted at the time that the wrong coaching hire can set you back for many years and guess what Richlands you are there! But all that in the rearview mirror now and turning your program over to someone who actually wants the job is a good thing (aka Jeremy Houseright) so if Breeding wants the job and is willing to take the time to rebuild it then by all means let him have it. It may take several years but recruiting the hallways at the high school is where you must start and we know how the transfer portal works in Tazewell County!! LOL! I wish the Blues luck and success in their next hire except on certain days!

  12. Well it's the quarterfinal round this weekend. There are two local teams left in 2A Hampton which won an instant classic over Bledsoe County 36-31. In 4A Greeneville dominated 9-2 Gibbs 42-0 and Elizabethton lost to Anderson County 21-7.

So here are the quarterfinal matches in all the brackets.

In 1A: Oliver Springs (9-3) hosts Coalfield (11-1) the winner hosts the winner of South Pittsburg (12-0) vs. Gordonsville (8-4) the other side of the bracket Moore County (12-0) hosts McKenzie (11-1) and the winner of that game hosts the winner of Dresden (12-0) & Union City 9-3

         I like a South Pittsburg-Moore County final

In 2A: Hampton (10-2) hosts the Dragons of York Institute (12-0) the winner hosts the winner of Smith County (10-2) and East Robertson (11-1) in the west Riverside (10-2) hosts Huntingdon (11-1) and Mitchell (11-1) hosts Fairley (10-2).

I like East Robertson vs. Huntingdon final

In 3A: It doesn't matter Alcoa will win their 9th straight title I like East Nashville to come out of the west.

In 4A: Greenville (10-0) hosts Anderson County (8-4), this will be the game of the night in the TSSAA playoffs, the winner hosts the winner of Upperman (12-0) @ Macon County (11-1). the west bracket has Marshall County (10-2) travelling to Nashville to play Pearl Cohn (Cone)

12-0. The Tomcats of Haywood (10-2) host Dyer County (7-5). This is the best bracket in the state and any of 7 of these 8 teams can win the title I like the winner of AC/ Greeneville and Pearl Cohn title game.

In 5A: Powell (9-3) hosts Knox West (11-1) and the winner host the surprise Clinton (6-6) and Walker Valley (10-2) in  the west . Centennial (10-2) hosts Page (11-1) the winner hosts perennial playoff team Henry County (11-1) and upstart Southwind (12-0).

I like a Knox West/ Henry County final.

In 6A: Bradley Central (12-0) travels to Bearden (8-3) and Riverdale (9-3) hosts Oakland (10-2) in the battle of Murfreesboro! The west has Ravenwood (9-3) hosts Brentwood (12-0) and in the Battle of Germantown. Germantown (12-0) travels across town to Houston (10-2).

               I like a Oakland/Germantown final

    42-7 type of game.

The long road out of football purgatory has many twists and turns and this game will be a solid win by Graham, but Gate City is clawing back one inch at a time and in a game like this they need yards instead of inches and yards will be hard to come by for the Devils. Graham will win by a lot!

Im on vacation in Tennessee and thinking about attending East Robertson at Marion County... U know anything about these schools? Good game possibly?

Marion County is 11-0 and East Robertson is 10-1, these are the best two teams in the east in 2A. The winner of this game should go to Chattanooga to the Championship Game. East Robertson has freaky athletes but are very undisciplined, and Marion County has a ton of athletes too.! If you are going to go see a game go see this one!

  15. Round one is in the books and the pickins as they say are slim! No region one teams survived in 1A, 3A, 5A and with exception of Jefferson County in 6A.

The 9-2 Hampton Bulldogs host the Warriors of Bledsoe County (9-2) (Pikeville, TN.)  in Hampton Friday night and the winner gets to host the quarterfinal round next week against the Fighting Alvin Yorks of York Institute and Oneida! 2A is probably the most wide open of all the classes in Tennessee.

In 4A: Gibbs (9-2) makes the trip to Burley Stadium In Greeneville to play the 9-0 Greene Devils. Gibbs won an overtime thriller verses Northview Academy (Kodak, TN.) 28-27 and Greeneville won 48-14 over Fulton, the other side of the bracket has one of the most anticipated games of the week ,in any class, as Elizabethton a 38-0 winner over Knox Carter playing in Clinton against the Mavericks of Anderson County a 49-0 winner over Sullivan East!  The winners meet in the quarterfinal round in week 3 of the playoffs.

I will include Jefferson County in the post because they are technically in Region 1. The Patriots have has a massive turn around thanks to Spencer Riley who played guard at Tennessee in the late 90's and was a member of the 1998 National Championship team. Riley is a O-Line and TE guru and his team just lines up and mauls you! Jefferson County (10-1) hosts Bearden (8-3) and the winner gets the Maryville (7-4) versus Bradley Central (11-0) ...good luck stopping Boo Carter in that game!

Get out and go to a game, the kids need your support and the TSSAA needs your money!
