EliteSWVAFan reacted to swva_havok_fan in Region D semifinals
I knew when Union was on the Ridgeview side of the bracket that we were probably in trouble. Kory has finally figured out the Lady Wolfpack I believe. I'm happy for him. Hope he can bring the Lady Bears back a title.

EliteSWVAFan reacted to sixcat in Who is the best Class 1 Region D and C
Region C
Boys
1. Auburn
2. George Wythe
3. Bland
4. Parry McClure
5. Narrows
Auburn is the clear favorite but I can't count out PM. The Pioneer is such a week district, it's hard to tell how they will stack up against Auburn, GW and Bland.
Girls
1. George Wythe / Galax
3. Rural Retreat
4. Covington
5. Eastern Montgomery
GW and Galax are the only real choices here. Galax started the season 3-5 with two freshmen in the starting lineup and a first year head coach. They have gone 11-1 since with the only loss coming at Radford in a really tight game. This streak also includes an 11-point win over GW. Galax senior Shea Foxx is the schools all time leading scorer and will play next season at UVA-Wise. Her sister is a freshman who stands 6'-2" tall and can play all 5 positions on the floor with ease. She is shooting over 35% from the three point line! When she plays within herself, she is the best player on the floor every night. She is a legitimate D1 prospect and has already been on an unofficial visit to Old Dominion.

I'm thinking that the Mountain 7 could merge with the SWD and pick up another member to create..... Wait for it..... MS-13.
(Admittedly, I'm pretty ashamed of myself for this one. But it couldn't be helped.)

Mcamis isn't that good. Put a good defense on him and he's shut down. Play physical basketball and he's crying. He will be put in his place soon enough and I can't wait to see it 😁

EliteSWVAFan reacted to GoBearsGo in M7 Boys Games Tonight (January 4)
That must be the new fad in high school basketball and it pains me to watch. Union falls into that far to often to be successful. They struggled shooting in the first half against Abingdon and it almost cost them the game. I’m not a fan of the 4 man weave, chuck up a 3 offense and hope it goes in. Finally in the 2nd half they had success in the paint and it opened up a few 3’s. I’m a firm believer in working inside out, it just seems like a lost art.

I was chatting with someone from this site last night about some of these girls playing on the same AAU team. I was also talking to the dad of one of the girls mentioned in this thread a few times. He has been a close family friend of mine for 38 years. His younger daughter is only an 8th grader and plays for the same AAU team as a lot of these girls. We have some seriously talented girls coming along that are learning how to compete from a lot of the girls mentioned within this thread.
I've said it for years on this site, football gets all the attention but girls basketball and softball are by far and away the most consistently dominant programs across SWVA.

One to look out for in the next year or two will be Bailey's sister Brooklyn Frazier. Already has a 19 point performance against John Battle last night as well as a 17 point outing against Grundy in this, her freshman season.

TJ is the administration now at Central if I am not mistaken after Collins retired in September. That being said, I really found no fault with the sign. Those who were offended are getting awfully soft. It was harmless and the response at the end of the game was appropriate. It should all be considered good fun IMO.

EliteSWVAFan reacted to cityofRaven in State quarterfinals (3/2-3/3)
Honestly, any other venue in far Southwest Virginia would be closer to Gate City than Graham, thus being an advantage to the Devils.
If the Gate City and the fanbase wanted a better venue then they should have beat Graham last weekend.
Graham earned the right to host and have hosted state playoff games at TMS before so that's that.
Despite everyone thinking this is just the Mac McClung roadshow it's actually still the VHSL playoffs and with the system put in place this year, be it as bad as it is, this is what we have.

Okay. It’s not funny.
Your little act isn’t making anyone laugh. It’s not cute. It’s not clever.
You have 93 posts on this board and you didn’t start typing/acting like this until around post 85. Everything before was homer-ish, but normal conversation.
So either this is a sad attempt to get noticed or someone has hacked your account.
I know which one I think it is...

EliteSWVAFan got a reaction from Deleted Account in 2017-18 Girls Season
Well, aside from Gate City & Richlands, the girls are much more competitive at a statewide level than the boys in this end of the state. It's nice to see this amount of interest for sure, especially knowing the effort some of these girls are putting out year round now. Back when I played (~10 yrs ago), there were only a few girls playing year round; now, there's pretty much at least one from most teams here playing and working year round.

EliteSWVAFan reacted to sixcat in 2017-18 Girls Season
Girls basketball and softball consistently produce more state championship caliber teams than any other sports on our end of the state and have for a long time. They rarely receive the same recognition as the boys, however. It's nice to see the efforts of these young lady's being noticed with the amount of activity on this site.
The girls who remain in the program at Galax are changing the culture. The new coach ruffled some feathers of parents and players alike causing roughly half the program participants to quit over the past year. I'm not certain that's an altogether negative thing. Changing a culture of mediocrity means changing habits, patterns, expectations and desires. Those who weren't willing to put in the work throughout the spring and summer were a part of the culture of mediocrity. The results have been tremendous thus far. This team is young, hungry but inconsistent. But the inconsistency is changing rapidly!
I look forward to what these girls can accomplish over the next few years.

I only know about the girls:
I think 1-4 or maybe even 5 are a toss up. These girls are going to come out hard every night and it will be anybody's game.
Abingdon has a roster of AAU girls. Hess, Taylor Gilbert, Emily Breeding, Sarah Walters, and Peyton Carter have all played on the AAU circuit this summer. They have the experience and potential to really be a great team; Hess seems to always know where the ball needs to be on the floor and as the floor general, she gets it there.
Central only has one player who has played in the AAU circuit over the summer (Dee Cvetnich), but the team is talented. Cvetnich is averaging a double-double through 4 games and Gracie Mullins has taken on a leadership role. Brook Porter and Olivia Mullins are experienced guards having started in previous seasons and Olivia Mullins is showing more confidence in driving the lane. Watching them at the PVNB tournament, it appears they need to get better control of the ball and limit turnovers.
Ridgeview has two really talented guards in Bailey Frazier and Nikole Counts; they're capable of getting to the hoop at will. Frazier played the AAU circuit over the summer, but watching her this weekend she seemed to be playing in pain and had both hips on ice following every game. That would be my biggest concern for them. Ridgeview did show great ball movement this weekend and they have 5+ girls who are able to consistently hit the 3.
Union is just a bunch of athletes. The whole bunch is long and lean. Abigail Webb has stepped up and taken on a scoring role, and Ashley Chester has consistently been a scorer and rebounder for the Bears over the past 3 years and that is holding through their first games of this young season. Jayda Smith has shown improvement and I believe she's only a sophomore. She's going to contribute a lot for them this season.
Gate City has an experienced senior in Tori Powers and a fresh face in Sarah Thompson. Although Thompson is a freshman this year, she played for an AAU team this year that literally walked all over most anyone that they came up against in their age division (along with Honaker's freshman LeeAnna McNulty). She may not be experienced in Varsity play, but she's played against the best girls her age nationwide over the summer and she will surprise some people.
John Battle's Callie Haderer is back for her final season with the Trojans and after a successful AAU season this summer, is poised to have a great year. Coming off a season where they showed growth in being able to knock off Gate City at the end of last year, I think they'll be hungry to show that they've improved. To be honest, even though Honaker is a 1A school, I was surprised to see John Battle beat them in the VA High Tournament this weekend so I think they're going to give teams a tougher game this year than in recent years.
I've honestly not heard anything about Lee High this year and I don't think they've played a game yet. I think they do play tonight though.

EliteSWVAFan reacted to Girls-Hoops in Mountain 7 Predictions
That was a really good breakdown of the teams/girls. I can only make one correction. All the girls that traveled throughout the summer, played Showcase ball, not AAU. After about 7th grade AAU ball becomes really weak and most of the better girls moves up to the Showcase circuit.

One of the girls’ teams. SWVA is respectably strong in girls’ athletics. Both may happen, but I think the history is clear which should be favored.

EliteSWVAFan reacted to Girls-Hoops in Projected top girls teams to watch
I should have Said their has been a lot of good 1A and 2A teams from SWVA. And SWVA will continue to produce good teams over the next 5-6 years. They may not be All from the same schools either. I cannot argue with the statement that outside of C40, it would be hard to find 5-6 good teams.
