I still think its hilarious how Cecil Roberts and the Unions are crying about losing their jobs and how unfair the federal government is being.  A ton of these union guys supported Obama in 2008 and Richard Trumpka was standing beside that POS on the campaign trail even after he told the S.F. Chronical that he was going to bankrupt the coal fired power plants.  Hell, the process was already rolling against them in 2012 and they still DID NOT support Mitt Romney who said he would come to their aid.  It just dumbfounds me they could be that stupid.

And the training programs the federal government talks about to re-train these out of work miners, what are they going to re-train them to do??  Answer phones at a call center that doesn't exist?

My top Richlands moment was the time Graham went for two leading 20-0 with just a couple of minutes left in the game.  That lit a fire under some Richlands folks...

Eddie Hall could shave before coming to school, have a 5 o'clock shadow by 1st period, and a full beard by the time he suited up for practice at 3:30.

He and Jake Houseright were the only two players I've seen in high school who could dominate a game on both sides of the ball.

    Both were men among boys.

Don't forget about Eddie's twin sister, Elaine.  She was a hell of an athlete at Graham, too.

Ultimately, I'm not convinced that transferring to "Generic Successful School" really improves any athlete's marketability as an individual prospect.  Precedent strongly indicates that there isn't any depth of Division 1 talent in Southwest Virginia to begin with.  And this still tends to hold true in the present age when recruiting services have access to data on all individual players at a ridiculously focused level.

On the other hand, local colleges like Emory & Henry seem to generate better results on the field when they can recruit kids from high schools that didn't fill their respective trophy cases.  I'm thinking in particular of the Wasp squads of the mid '80s that featured solid contributions from Richlands guys like Sandy Rogers, Jack Ginn, and Dale McGlothlin.  Their class at RHS had a four year W/L record of 14-26.

It also depends on the philosophy of those in charge of any given college program.  The folks I've interacted with directly in the field of recruiting have all stuck to the same story.  First, they are looking for basic athletic ability (which also corresponds closely to a certain body type and dimension in any given sport and any given position).  Beyond that, they are looking for kids who are "coachable" (which can mean any number of different things).  There are schools such as DeMatha who have carefully cultivated and promoted an image of producing talent.  But that's largely a myth.

With the possible exception of Merrill Gainer's Beaver squads in the 1960s, no local program in the area seems to be able to make the claim that it can give players a "leg up" in terms of attracting collegiate attention.  Any recruiting which does take place would seem geared toward the immediate goal of improving an individual program's ability to win games and championships.  Just my two cents....

I cannot blame any family for chasing the limitless variety of diverse business opportunities that exist in the Cedar Bluff, Pounding Mill, Richlands, Raven, Bandy, and Jewell Ridge zip codes of Tazewell County.  I further cannot blame people who wish to contribute to the population explosion occurring in that fertile crescent.

I hope to see before I die, the time come that we Graham fans get off the back of the people that coach our teams, say nothing when good can't be said, and provide examples that instill respect for the staffs. When that happens, we will accomplish much more than out scoring opponents, and isn't that the goal of athletics at this level?

You play to win the game. If stall-ball is how you must play to win it, then go for it. If the other team hits its shots, then stall-ball'a going to fail.

Seems likes teams in general didn't score as much years ago. Remember how worn the field at Mitchell would get as the season went. The games at Mitchell now are nothing like this.

    Bowl game means the following:
One month's extra practice time.  Key for those freshmen and red-shirts. Continued discussion of your team in a quiet time helps recruiting. A chance to go to an exotic location. (Shreveport, Annapolis) Per diem money for the players. Swag from the bowl. The right to talk smack to your bretheren who did not.  (This is fair game, while not always the tactful move.)

“It’s definitely devastating. I’ve only been here two years, but 11 straight years is a long time. The last time we beat Tech, I was nine years old,” Virginia defensive end Max Valles said. “We’ve got to get stuff going..”

Field is fine, unless you just don't like to get dirty. Unless something has changed recently, both teams have to play on it regardless of the conditions.

yeah thats easy to say but impossible to prove...Grundy had their best defense in years that year....would have given Gretna a much better game than Tazewell (who Grundy had just beat the hell out of a couple of weeks earlier...along with Va High as well)...but, we'll never know because the refs in the Va High game took that off the table for all involved and sent Grundy home, Va High didn't even get across the 50 yard line that entire game until OT put them in the red zone automatically and Grundy had 2 or 3 TD's called back....so...say and think what you want but it is what it is.

They also said that same Grundy team would get blown out at Collinsville by all the "track stars" on that team and Grundy went down there and hung 21 points on them in the first quarter before they knew what hit them and closed out that schools history with a loss.
