If I’m not mistaken ph (who will probably be the hogo 3 seed) beat twin springs (favored to be second behind eastside in the Cumberland) by 15+. That’s why I said that it could be an upset if Lee won. Deep swva teams add teams like Hancock county to the schedule just for easy wins. Granted a win is a win but to me it does not mean v much to beat a team like that.

PH also beat TS by 3 in Nicklesville.

The Hogo has the better teams no doubt about it at the top this year.  The Cumberland is very young overall. RC returns the most depth but is still very young.  They are starting to get their basketball legs so hopefully they will have it together coming out of this tourney when district play starts next week.

  2. To me a legend in the area.  Sarge was a long time assistant for Harry Fry at Gate City.  In the late 70s he took over as the lead Dawg at Appalachia stepping down in 79 after a 7-3 campaign handing the keys to Tom Turner to take over.  Sarge then took over the Rye Cove program in 83 and got the broke on the brink of a state title in 88.  RC had defeated Jonesville at Jonesville near the end of the regular season before losing to the Dogs in a mud bowl in the region finals during the improbable run for the crew from Jonesville.  Sarge stepped out of coaching after 1990 but returned to the Cove in 97.   He was to be he HC but took the assistant title instead so a former player, Joe Carter could be the HC.   Sarge still ran almost everything for the program for the next three years which were some of the programs winningest teams.   He took over the Twin Springs program in 2003 as they were coming out of a really rough stretch.  I asked him why he was heading up there.  Coach told me he liked a challenge and had coached at GC and RC, he might as well mark off the last county school before he retired for good. Coach stepped down after only two seasons.  He led TS to two of their programs three region final games during those two years.

Coach Reed wasnt flashy.  He wore the same clothes to practice everyday and its hard to tell how many miles had been put on his 80s Thunderbird.  He expected you to be physical as he said he only felt like he had lost two ballgames when his teams were the most physical one on the field.  The playbook wasn't super deep on either side of the ball but like the nickname "Sarge" practice was drilled like military over and over to run things to perfection.  He commanded respect but showed his "bigguns" a lot of love over the years.  RIP to a SWVA coaching legend in my book.

    You serious??

Never would have made that connection. Not only does she get it from her dad, but she get's it from her grandpa Kenny. Kenny is the real baller lol

Kenny Wayne was my dads HS coach at Rye Cove.  He still talks fondly of the person and coach he was.  He follows Carroll on NFHS to keep up with his granddaughter.

Won't win 13th region though.  That's going to the future Vol killer Trent Noah and the Harlan County Black Bears.  🙂

Probably right about 13th region.  He wont be a Vol Killer though toiling away at USCjr.  Might as well have gone to Duke if he wanted to be a white guy getting the crap kicked out of him in basketball by UT.

I understand that, or the fact that mostly the teams with deeper playoff runs get picked.  I think this should also probably be the case 95% of the time, but this is that 5% where you have kid who is a D1 Commit.  When the talent is so obvious, that should trump a deep playoff run in these 1 to 5% of cases.  Coe is committed to a team that was ranked in the top 25 in the country for a part of the season.  If the All State Team only selects All Region kids, then the Region also made a mistake if Coe wasnt first team Defensive End.  I watched Graham, Union, Tazewell, Ridgeview, Gate City.  They are all awesome teams, but none of them has a Defensive End as good as Coe.  I do understand the WHY....related to why he didn't make All State because no deep playoff run/Marion being a weaker team, but I just wish they would occasionally make an exception for the WHY when you have a D1 kid. Just my opinion though.  I'm sure others may have a different take.

I agree Coe deserved it. Its a flawed system.

All assistants and community members can do is either support or destroy, that's it. Any deviation from support is destruction. Know your role and push the program forward. Anything else erodes the HCs authority and hurts the program. HCs have a role too, lead and take responsibility. If they're not doing that then they're at fault.

Im not saying blindly follow but know your role and shut your mouth. Im not saying the HC is 100% at fault, but ultimately it falls on him.

Agreed.  When you have a quality staff everyone is contributing and at times that may be in the form of counter points, input on game plan and it all gets fined tuned together.  No one ego can be bigger than the other but the assistants have to understand the HC may get the glory but they also will shoulder the most blame too.

  7. Pulled up a preseason preview from the BHC that shows Parker Bandy, Aidan Lowe, Malachi Lowe, Elijah Musick, Austin Clayburne, Peyton Whited and Tyler Cole listed as seniors. Not sure if other starters on either side of the ball graduate or not.  Peyton Musick will return of course and hes a stud at QB and Avery Musick looked like a capable skill guy before injury..

Don't know what the enrollment numbers were at Pennington before consolidation, but with the low numbers now at Lee I couldn't imagine they were much different than current numbers.  With that, Pennington should have been whooping 1A worse than they were.

Pennington was 2A. The last year maybe two before Lees consolidation Region D  was won by Cumberland District schools in both Division 1 & 2.

Lebanon boys go to eastside on Friday. Any knowledge on eastside? I figured since they had like 3-4 starters graduate they would be in rebuild mode

I think Eastside graduated 6-7 of last years players but I may be mistaken.  No matter what Damron and his staff will have them well prepared and tough to beat.

I'm just an armchair QB, But Im still scratching my head why Graham drives to the red zone twice with Clements, then decides to pass..and fails to score each time.

Theres a few OCs out there who seem to get away from their bread and butter unnecessarily in the red zone.

  11. 1. Game of the year     Twin Valleys first win.  Kudos to Crigger and crew on that after having to shut down last year

    2. Play of the year         Narrows Hail Mary

    3. Best Uniforms          I am biased for the Cove

    4. Best Stadium          Its too big for HS ball but Mitchell still is the best

    5. Best home field advantage       The atmosphere at the Cove is solid right now.

    6. Best concession stand and why?   Didnt get to sample anyone but Twin Springs but their fudge sampler hit the sweet tooth spot.

    7. Nickname of The Year          Cheaters.  Said by so many losers.

    8. Can't catch a break (bad luck program)            Richlands.  Had a shot to beat Tazewell for their only win of the year and lightning....

    9. Best Helmet      Gate City

    10. POY in SWVA       Aiden Lowe    Gets it done on both sides of the ball.
