  1. Goochland traditionally runs double tight/double wing and is very, very physical.  They have added some wing action out of the shotgun recently.  I have talked with a Goochland alum that I know, during the season, and he expected to be in the finals and told me they are very good.  Like someone posted earlier, not many weaknesses.  If Graham get off to a fast start and can score quick....look out.  However, if Goochland slows the pace, Graham may get a bloody nose.  Regardless, these are the two best 2A teams in the state and the game will be a tremendous state final.  Good luck G-Men, represent Tazewell County well.

A foolish post that was derogatory towards Bluefield and WV football  warrants a truthful response, so I’m just going to going post an accurate story about Beaver history from online.

    Merille Gainer

Football Coach. Thru the 1960s he headed a number of nationally ranked high school teams. A 1940 graduate from Shepherd College, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II prior to starting a long coaching career. He first gained renown at Big Creek High School in War, West Virginia but earned a national reputation at Bluefield High School in Bluefield, West Virginia. Taking over a chronically losing program in 1959, he won a state championship; over nine seasons, his teams had a record of 87-6-1 and won four Class AAA state titles, with three of the losses and the tie coming in 1963. During his Bluefield years he coached several nationally ranked teams and turned down offers from a number of major colleges. Following the Beavers' fourth championship in 1967, Coach Gainer retired, though his retirement was to be short-lived as he accepted an offer from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, Virginia in 1969. The school had won one game in the previous three seasons but Coach Gainer immediately had them winning and the Patriots captured the Virginia state championship in 1973. The coach retired for good in 1978 but over the years was a highly sought after instructor for coaching seminars throughout the country. He was inducted into the National High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979 and the West Virginia Sports Writers Hall of Fame in 1986. Coach Gainer was the high school coach of "Rocket Boy" Homer Hickam at Big Creek and was portrayed in the movie "October Sky" by David Copeland. Today the stadium at Patrick Henry High School carries his name.

What would the 93 team have done, playoff wise? I know they beat GC that year but not much else. Was McCommons their rb?

McCommons was a Sophomore, the team finished 7-3 and had some great seniors like Chris Harrison, Brad Davis and Adam Yost.  Would have had a good run in the playoffs.  Lost to Lebanon, Powell Valley and Christiansburg.

The game was well in hand for Wise, and one coach standing on the field was jawing with the Clintwood staff essentially the entire fourth quarter. The game was stopped once to tell them to cool it, but the jawing and trash talk from BOTH sides was prominent. Cooler heads did not prevail and adults from both sides decided their own personal pride was more important than the youth they a supposedly serving, and providing leadership for a few days a week.

As someone stated above, this is the second MAJOR issue in two years with RV, and I’ve seen it escalate a few times other than those incidents as well. Their bad apples right now are really making it tough for the good ones (and there are wayyyy more great folks over there than not so great), to shine. The culture definitely needs to focus on who they allow to represent them in a public setting. Sure you’re going to have loud mouths everywhere, but a serious adjustment needs to be made, especially with a great program on the rise.

Youth league administrators need to stomp (no pun intended) this culture out by having a zero tolerance policy.  Empower the officials to eliminate morons and toss their butt out of the game.  If you eject them and they refuse to leave, forfeit the game or call the police.  Nothing better to set the example than seeing a turd wearing a pair of Smith and Wesson's to the back of the cruiser.  Gotta have someone with a pair of balls to say "not on my watch."

Even though I was on the first team to wear the Lighting R at Richlands I am still a fan of these two classic helmets.

The top design was worn in 92 (State Championship team) and 93.  The bottom design was debuted in 94.  This was the helmet when the silver uniforms were worn in the playoff game versus Lee.  The helmet design in 91 was basically the top design with a few more frills (striping and outlined decals.)  I always equated this helmet design with the New York Giants helmet when it read "GIANTS."   In case anyone is wondering, the player at top is Chris Harrison, one of the best linebackers to play at Richlands.  He also doubled at TE, he would have been scary in a spread, pass happy offense.  He could knock the snot out of ya!

We don’t know that he wasn’t invited. Perhaps he was and choose to turn it down for whatever reason? Not saying he did, but no one knows.

You always seem to counter point my point....wouldn't expect anything different.   It doesn't seem reasonable that he would turn down the first all star game west of Roanoke in like fifty years (that is actually in his home county) but you are right..no one knows.
