  1. Is there a Graham or Radford radio station carrying the game by any chance?
  2. Gate City: Neal McMeans, Jeff Baker & Tommy Godsey We tend to forget the players from the 60's. Neal was All-American at Tennessee if I remember correctly. Jeff is a legend. He and the Stallion had some epic battles. Jeff attended Georgia Tech. Tommy was an incredible inside linebacker. Bear Bryant came to GC to try to talk him into coming to Bama. No idea where he ended up.
  3. When all the money is on the favorite, bet the dog! GC can't stop anyone. Richlands 35 GC 21
  4. Since the teams played ten days ago, what changes do you think both or either team will make, if any?
  5. GC has definitely started slowly the last three games...Last complete game they played was against Cleveland. I think the main culprits are other teams spreading the floor, playing tempo, and not allowing the Devils to get into transition. The other reason is that for the last several games, including this one, Ervin gets out to a slow start. I expect Graham will control tempo and spread the floor also, which is very effective one they have a lead. Graham has fine outside shooters also and Lord knows GC gives opponents wide open looks all night. Should prove to be a relatively low scoring game and for that reason, I don't expect McClung to score 40. He's gonna need some help for GC to prevail.
  6. GC better get used to it. Starting this weekend, they won't be getting all the easy transition points they've enjoyed all season. Teams will be getting back and fouling to stop the easy buckets. They'll have to win by executing their half court offense, playing defense and rebounding.
  7. I didn't go to the game. What did Central do to hold GC to 2 points the last three minutes of the 2nd Quarter?
  8. Why? The only reason I can think of is that they must have got good ratings on the previous two games they streamed.
  9. If anyone attended the Adam Ward Classic and watched the Radford game and the Gate City game, could you please give us a comparison between the two teams? I know Gate City pulled away late to beat Pulaski County 89-69 while Radford extended its undefeated streak to 31 games in a row beating William Fleming 67-53.
  10. I was just reading an article on Graham's Darrin Martin who is Grahams' top scorer. It said he always guardian the opponent's top scorer. It should be very interesting if he matches up against McClung.
  11. Just curious but did either Union or Gate City coaches scout this game?
  12. GC's two starting seniors need to step up in the remaining games if the Devils are to advance. Neither have shot very well nor scored very much in the last four games. The Devils have been carried by a freshman and a sophomore.
  13. If the Tornadoes want to run, then it'll be a high scoring contest cause GC wants to run. They're at their best in a transition type game.
  14. I hope so...North is a natural rival, with similar student enrollments, and only 7 miles of separation...Hopefully, they'll replace Harlan County on the 2013 schedule. I also read that if this happens, SN would replace Richlands as the first game of the season and move that game until later in the season...Anyone hear this?
  15. Guess you have to pretty old to remember these two: Appalachia's Jim Riggs Gate City's Harry Fry
  16. Just read on the Clinch Mtn site, that Gate City beat Lebanon 66-49...Game was tied at halftime 28-28...Sounds like a battle the first half.
  17. GC doesn't have alot of depth...One player, who played on the offensive and defensive line, was dismissed from the team a couple of weeks ago... Union, with a less stellar rushing attack than Clintwood, ran the ball down the Devils' throat the entire second half...No big runs...just 4 and 5 yards at a time.
  18. Bowen is an excellent runner...He's GC's breakaway threat...He broke two against Union, one of which was brought back due to a penalty...He's not as elusive as Tylee but he may be faster...
  19. Should be a real barnburner in Clintwood friday night...I haven't had the opportunity to watch the Wave this year, but I've watched their videos against Lee and Burton...From what I saw, they are primarily a rushing team, (usually an I formation, even once i saw with 3 backs in the I), with a couple of fine tailbacks...They usually keep it between the tackles behind their huge offensive line although they do run what I describe as a stretch play just outside the tackles...They like to sneak the Fullback or Quarterback thru to keep defenses from loading up on the tailbacks...From what I saw, they rarely throw the ball down the field...Most of the throws were 10 yards or less, the majority of which, they throw to the outside receiver, when the defensive back is playing off, or hope the receiver can break a tackle... Defensively, it appeared that Clintwood's defense consisted of 3 downlinemen with 5 linebackers...Burton burned their secondary with 2 long passes and Lee's Graham had at least one 1 long touchdown run...Lee self destructed with either 3 or 4 fumbles deep in their own territory... Gate City is not even close to being the same team they were last year...The line is not as physical as it was last year...They rely more on misdirection than power...We've had trouble in short yardage situations all season...The Quarterback, Bowen, is a capable thrower and has several good receivers... Common opponents include Lebanon, Union & Lee: Clintwood beat Lebanon 30-8; Union 30-26; and Lee 43-18...Gate City beat Lebanon 36-0; Union 34-20; and Lee 14-6... Winner of this game will get a boatload of points and will probably move up in the seedings for the playoffs...
  20. Gate City 21 Virginia High 7 GC turned a VHS fumble into a Tyler Byrd 30 + yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to take a 14-7 lead...GC held the Bearcats on the following possession, and for some reason VHS punted...GC's Seaver Elliott scored on a 30+ touchdown to complete the scoring. Score at the Half was Gate City 7 VHS 0 with Elliott scoring a 20+ touchdown...VHS after a 76 yard drive scored in their first possession of the second half to even the score 7-7... I was favorably impressed with the Bearcats...They're very small, but had some speed and quickness...They're very disciplined on defense...Coach Wheeler had done a tremendous job with them and they should be a real force in the next few years.
  21. Congratulations on the win...Richlands' coach should be credited for 10 points for his gutsy call on 4th and 17 to set up their third score and for setting up the free kick for the field goal to make it 24-7 just before the half...I also thought QB Strong played extremely well escaping pressure on the first drive to pick a crucial first down on 4th and 11...Strong scrambled away several times during the night to get get big first downs to keep drives alive.
  22. I expect the Tornadoes to win decisively and that was before I heard GC's QB and one of their DBs are a bit dinged up...
  23. GC's offensive line was the key to beating Gretna and Radford, and several of those boys are back...We only punted one time during the playoffs, against Honaker, in the Regional championship...The QB was a sophomore with no previous experience, who threw two touchdown passes in the championship game...He's got a strong arm, is very accurate and can run...He reminds alot of us of Isaiah Spivey...That's the reason I believe Houseright will open up the offense somewhat...But when push comes to shove, no one doubts that the Devils will probably line up in a tight T and try to run it down their opponents' throats.
  24. I can help you with that...GC has the following starters coming back: 2 Tyler Bird (DB) 4 Michael Collier (SE) 10 Nick Bowen (QB) 25 Derick Miller (DE, TE) 30 Micah Bledsoe (LB) 34 Seaver Elliott (LB) 42 Montana Morris (DB) 55 Austin Reed © 62 Peyton Sivert (LB) 65 Jay Howington (DT) 70 Daniel McMurray (OL) 73 Cody Vaughn (OL) 77 Jared Carter (DT) No doubt losing Vaughn, Dusty & Seth Clark, and the rest are huge, but we have a fairly solid nucleus to build on...Cory Franklin and Seaver Elliott will probably take Dusty's and Joseph's spot...We should be ok...Under the old setup, I think we would probably host the substate with an opportunity to return to Salem...However, given the seedings and , given our brutal schedule, we will probably have to play one of the Region A or B powers at their place, and get knocked out early...
