I played for Colobro yes, and Houseright. And as Hokie1Pokie stated, I never said that Coach Jones and or Coach D couldn’t coach. Coach Jones was one of my favorite coaches when I played (though I loved them all). Barry Jones is probably the most decorated coaches in the region. He has been apart of multiple state championship team. As for Coach D, he cares for the young men and has done a good job with them. I really like him as a person as well, he will excel under Houseright with more freedom that didn’t have under Akers. He came from a good program (Mance/Richlands) that establishes the same of what GC used to do and is wanting to get back to. I even wish we were able to hang on to Selfe, his fire would’ve been fun to have with Jeremy in charge. So, I was just stating that we had a lot of blue blood back into the program and that is a good thing. We we have some guys who understand the tradition and are trying to reestablish those rich roots before they are gone forever.  No, Colobro (spelled out unlike you/though you question my keyboard skills) and Fry (spelled correctly unlike you/and you mock my keyboard skills) were not from GC. I’m not saying you have to be from GC to be a good coach. I’m pretty sure I’ve read my previous post a few times now and do not see how you thought that. But I believe having those guys back (Houseright, Darren Reed, Austin Reed, Matt Reed, Hunter Jones, Hackney) can only help us get back to understanding the history of what GC football means. I was not All-State in football or baseball. I guess that means I wasn’t worth a damn. But I do have a few accolades in both sports, with the team honors meaning more than any individual ones I ever received. But anyone who truly knows me, knows that I gave my all for the name across the chest of my jersey.  You claim to know an awful lot about me, why hide behind your screen name? Come say hello sometime. I highly doubt I’ll answer to idiot though. Just be sure to call me by name ole bud.

People put too much stock into scrimmages and Jamborees. I've seen teams struggle with other teams in Jamborees only to spank them later in the season. You don't win preseason games. You go into them to find what weaknesses you need to work on. Real game Hurley could beat Gate City handily or vise versa.

With the events the past 3 seasons, I agree that we are lucky. More blessed in a way. We are blessed to have gotten Jeremy back. A man who cares about the kids. That whole staff cares for the kids, a lot of blue blood now on that staff. I believe Barry Jones and Aaron Daugherty are the only none GC grads with Barry being part of the program long enough in the past to be a true Devil. We are moving forward. It’s going to be a long process but we have already made strides in fixing the program. The numbers are low, but those 33 kids have bought into what this staff is selling. I was told those kids were there every day this summer busting it unless on family vacation. I am out of town and didn’t make it last night, but I was told that they laid more hits last night than they did in the last 3 seasons combined. We will get better day by day. Little by little. We may experience losses along the way, but Jeremy and staff are instilling a winning attitude. We will no longer go into a game already down 21-0 in our minds. Do the little things right, and the big things will take care of themselves. The payoff will be huge in 3-5 years. We must ignore the outsiders and control what we can control. The outsiders better get their kicks in while they can. The days of “it’s just Gate City” are limited.

A W is a W. Better than what we’ve been. We have some heart, fight, and desire. We will be patient. It’s not a 1 step solution. But we are headed in the right direction. We know it’s gonna take time. But I believe in Jeremy and staff. Rome wasn’t built overnight. Go Blue!

I agree as I had this conversation with someone just the other day. The GC program has been affected all the way down through LL. Once that happens it's hard to get those kids back as they now have other interests. It's not an overnight solution and folks need to be patient. I think GC will have more wins this season but they do have a long ways to go before relevance is reached.

You're welcome.  Heard Pulaski Co HS gym holds 3,500, but the VHSL says it holds 3,000.  I expect a packed house Tuesday. Go Big Blue!

Martinsville keeping it close was no surprise.  The dogs play great defense and GC played into the game plan of MHS and still found a way to come away with the W.  So that's big time for the Devils.  If someone had told me before the game that GC would play into the MHS style I would have said that GC loses this game.  Great win for the Devils and congrats on a great season to the Dogs.
MHS give Radford all they could stand for 3.5 qtrs the last game and kept it below double digits until the final minutes when a couple 3 pt buckets stretched the lead out.  The dogs were a legit contender.  They held both Radford and now GC below 50 pts.  That's all that needs to be said.

Thats the issue though.   Everyone with eyes knows GC is better with Zac and it's not even close.  But the team had developed good chemistry without him and those role players knew they had to step up to win games which in theory should pay dividends.  However, now that hes back.....the role players dont seem to get involved as much (aside from the 4th qtr vs Graham).  If those guys will continue to step up and all contribute now with Zac back in the fold  instead of taking the backseat and watching the Brad and Zac show then yes.....I agree they have a a chance at it again.  But almost anyone that's watched them all year would agree....the team right before Zac went out looked like a shell of what it was at the beginning of the season.  The first glimpse of that same team was the end of the game against the Gmen.  If they can sustain that for 4 qtrs.....its gonna get interesting.

Why can’t Wise Central girls play at Virginia High? It works both ways. GC won the Region D, it’s their choice, sorry but that’s how it goes. My opinion is that boys and girls should play on separate days because of this issue. Plus GC historically does not play well at UVA-Wise, not sure why, it’s probably a mental block. That’s why GC was tickled when Graham wanted the State Semifinal game at Tazewell last year.
But Gate City has won some historic games at VHS in the past. Good choice by Scotty, Brent, and all involved to have it at the Bearcat Den. Most GC fans much rather travel to VHS vs UVA-Wise. Plus having just 2 games at each venue will keep fans from arguing over seating and parking.

I'm just glad GC played Lebanon last night instead of Central, Battle, or Union....let alone Graham.   Devils would have been taking an early seat.  And no offense to Lebanon cause those kids played their butts off.

I'd rather my coach talk some shit rather than treat officials with zero respect and let members of staff or people close to him accost and be physical with officials after a game, if I had to choose.
I don't have a lot of love for Vermillon, I'm not from GC, but you'll find more people accept his behavior than McAmis.

Jeremy has asked for every GC fans support and here you all here bashing the man before the first practice. This ain’t Akersland anymore. Jeremy, had a prior dedication to the girls b-ball team. I’m a firm believer that he should finish the season if he wishes. What example does it set for the girls he coaches if he quits on them? (No one answered this last time so I’ll ask again) Plus he is trying to recruit b-ball players. Good way to do it is to be around them daily during practices.

As for Stan, the kids always loved him. He is a blue devil and a motivator. We need that around our kids.

We’re trying to rebuild this ship, quit putting more holes in it. Jeremy and the program needs our support more than ever before. Get behind him and the team, we gotta get rid of the negativity. Jeremy isn’t a fool and is doing his thing.  Reed is right guy to lead the weight room. And I hear he’s whipping those boys into shape.

Sigh. Am afraid Zac's high school career might be over. Hate that. Had a chance to really climb the VHSL career scoring ladder. Those who know him, know that he is also a great kid.
Coach Vermillion...."It's a minor thing, and he could play right now, but that wouldn't be the wisest thing for his health. This is a wonderful game and a wonderful community, but this is a young man with a basketball future and we've got to do the right thing for him. We're going to allow him to get better before we play him again."
.......and just like that the M7 and Region is wide open.
However...........great effort last night. Lots of minutes played by lots of kids. Understandably took a little while for the team to get going. Saw the GC half court defense of old. GC gave up 21 first half points, and 15 second half points. Saw the offense move the ball around and work for a better shot.

Hats to the whole GC team last night. I feel like everyone stepped and got things done without Ervin. Dean dropped 40 and we got 21 from the rest  of the team which is huge considering the rest of the team probably hasn’t combined for that much in a long while. Very good defense, looked like the days of old. Very happy with the team effort. GC now leads the series 17-0 in boys, poor McAnus.

Best case scenario.....Ervin could be back in 4-5 weeks.  That's if it's best case scenario and thats very unlikely from what I've heard.  If it's the worst scenario I think its 6-8 weeks....and probably more on the latter side of that.

I’m hearing a lot of kids are already buying in (that haven’t played football in awhile) and it hasn’t even been a week. Amazing how hiring one guy can boost moral and change the whole outlook of a program. Jeremy is super excited and ready to get to work. I guess the next question is who will be the assistants and coordinators.
