  1. This is a scenario that I see play out this time of the year every year in high school sports: (Names have been changed to protect innocent and guilty parties) The coach at West County High School typically opens the weightroom at 8am on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. 20 kids show up and workout until two a days start in late July. The team goes 5-5 and earns a playoff spot but gets booted in the first round. An average of 1000 fans show up for home games and maybe 300 make it to road games. Nobody from the school gets a scholarship but 6 kids do make all district. West County is your average High School football program. The coach across town at East County has a schedule that looks something like this: M W T weight room with 50 kids. Tuesday 7 0n 7 passing league with 3 other teams. Wednesday pm and Friday the coach takes 12 players to a college for a recruiting workout. Saturday 7 on 7 tournament at UVA. Sunday the coach takes 20 players to the Va Tech combine. The team goes 9-1 with a 36-7 victory over West Co. and makes it to the Regional Finals. An average of 4000 of your fans show up for home games and 2500 travel to road games. 7 players get a scholarship of some sort and 1 gets an offer from Va Tech. If your kid was serious about football and had a real shot at playing at the next level would you consider finding a way to play for East Co or take your chances and stick with West Co?
  2. Any game that Salem lost. They are all equalling fulfilling.
  3. I hear that Richlands is going to the 7 on 7 National Qualifier at RE Lee. Should be a good workout and a good indicator on how good they look against some very good teams.
  4. This looks like the press release from last years game. It even says 2011 on it.
  5. Thanks for the replies. I admit I know very little about what Richlands retains but I still feel like they will be the team to beat in Region IV. It has been a two horse race for a few years now and I don't see much competition coming from Martinsville or any of the other teams this year. Cave Spring lost Sam Wright and don't return anybody that touched the football last year so even if Richlands is 75% of what they were previously they will still be the favorites in my eyes.
  6. I am surprised that there are 25 responses to this topic and zero are about Richlands. Is it because it is a given that they will be good or is the subject avoided because expectations are low? Or is it that nobody has a clue?
  7. School may not be required to check residency but it is in their best interest if they do. I know of a school in Roanoke Co that sends Social Services out to verify that the student does in fact live at the registered address before allowing them to participate in sports. It protects the school in the event that questions arise about eligibility.
  8. I could be wrong but I believe that the state rule applies to same school year transfers. In other words a student cannot transfer from school A after football season and still play basketball for school B during the same school year. I am positve that there is a state rule that forces a student to sit out a year if he has already transferred once then transfers a second time.
  9. Teams have been able to practice since 2 weeks after basketball practice started. I have noticed several teams in Roanoke practicing outdoor in shorts and helmets for atleast the last month . Also, Salem is hosting a 7 on 7 at the end of this month. If teams wait until August to get started they are going to be WAY behind many others.
  10. Have you guys noticed that the wording on some of these news clips and meeting minutes has changed from "GOING to happen" and "NEEDS to happen" to "IF it happens"? There seems to be more comments about slowing this process down as the realities of the hurdles become more apparent. An AD that is very involved in the whole R+R situation told me that he went from thinking there was a 99.9% probability it would happen next year to now thinking it is 50-50 that it will be pushed back.
  11. CC is like Franklin Co. Nobody wants them. Despite what the VHSL is floating right now I would be shocked if CC ends up in the River Ridge.
  12. We should start a pool now predicting where he will be next year.
  13. I think these initial R&R proposals are flawed with a purpose. I believe they are applying flaws to allow room for a negotiated settlement. Carroll does not fit into the River Ridge and Franklin Co does not fit into the Seminole. I think they placed them there so that when the VHSL members as a whole makes a list of gripes as to where these and many others are going to go they will be able to say "OK we will move Carroll and Franklin but not team C and D." Therefore everybody feels like they won something even if they must lose some arguments.
  14. Home schooled families do pay taxes but they are given a choice. If they choose not to participate in the work that other kids need to do in order to maintain the privilege of playing sports then they should not be allowed to participate in the events they do choose to play in. I wonder if a public school kid that wanted to play in a home schooled league would be allowed to play or would he/she be told that it was only open for the home schooled kid?
  15. Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia is looking for a 2nd scrimmage. We could scrimmage on August 15th, 16th or 17th. A benefit game would work for our program and possibly yours as our fan base has a history of traveling well. We are unable to host an event therefore we're looking for an arrangement where we would travel. If interested contact Coach Torrence @ (540) 561-8155 or by e-mail @ btorrence@rcs.k12.va.us
  16. If he ends up at Liberty I wouldn't be too surprised.
  17. I was told by a coach after the game that they suspect a broken ankle. The coach says he is out next week.
  18. Congrats to Cave. I heard several score updates while at the Brookville Northside game and thought someone was pulling my leg. Also congrats to Richlands on a fine season.
  19. It's noon on Friday and I bet Cave is already on the bus headed to Richlands lol That's gotta suck. Richlands 38 Cave Spring 26 I also bet both teams will be scoreboeard watching tonight also and rooting for Brookville. Northside and Brookville will be rooting for Cave in order to shorten the trip next week. Good luck to all teams and I hope everyone can stay healthy.
  20. With Cave it's the other way around. They build early leads then try to hold on. In 2 of their 3 losses they took a nosedive after having large leads. They were ahead of Salem 26-0 before losing. They were up 14 on Hidden Valley before losing in OT. In the other loss they fell behind Northside quickly then seemed to not really try to play catch-up. Cave can win this game if they control the ball early and can prevent Richlands from getting easy scores. The more plays it takes Richlands to score the closer this game will be.
  21. Ditto, I may have mis-stated that Cave would not be interested in playing Northside. I have spoken to a few of the parents and they feel that Northside would beat them due to the fact that Northside has won the last 3 meetings by 3+ scores including a 24 point margin earlier this year. On the other hand Cave has played benefit games against Brookville the last few years and it has always been a very close affair. I'm sure the Cave Spring kids would be delighted to play another week regardless of who the opponent would be. As far as Brookville vs Northside goes i think it will be a toss up game.
  22. TJ, Your English neighbor doesn't live in a sub-division off of Colonial Ave does he? When I read your post it made me think of him. I'm torn on this game. I will be able to go to the state semi next week and I want to see Richlands play a top flight opponent but the thought of Bogle being only a mile from my house makes me root for Cave. I agree with the points you made on the game. Although I'll stick with my pick of Richlands winning I will agree that if Sam can control the clock Cave can frustrate Richlands. I also wonder how Richlands will react if everything doesn't come easy as it has so far this year.
  23. Having seen both teams I don't think Richlands fans have alot to worry about. Devin and Sam Wright will get their share of the yardage but Richlands will be able to exploit Cave's secondary. Cave will be the best team Richlands has played but they are missing some key ingredients. For one Cave has no kicking game whatsoever. They rarely attempt extra points and kickoffs are pathetic at best. Richlands is guaranteed excellent field position to respond to any Cave score. Cave fans do not travel well. Even with excellent weather I do not expect a large CS turnout. Cave also knows whats coming if they were to win this game. Several of their parents think they will have a fighting chance against Brookville but they have zero interest in seeing Northside in the semi finals. On the flip side these Cave kids want to prove everyone wrong. With the exception of the Northside game they have relished in their ability to overachieve. (CBurg) Barring a major turnover issue for Richlands I expect to see the Blue Tornado win this game 38-26.
