  1. Historically, CalPreps is far more accurate with predictions. But as you get deeper into the playoffs, it becomes more difficult.
  2. I don't have a user profile over there and never desired one. My fault for not looking through other posts of his before jumping over here. Seems like the guy is a keyboard hero. Probably should review my own philosophy before repeating that process!
  3. Read a few posts from PM faithful on another site. According to them, two Hurley "fans" were arrested following the game for attacking their own players. No idea if this is indeed true and i am not implying that it is. Given some stuff posted on this site this season by some Hurley "fans", it does seem plausible. If there is any truth to those claims, those "fans" aren't doing anything but destroying the reputation of the very community they claim to love and support.
  4. Same story, different year for Galax. Dougie Peoples has 372 yards on 18 carries and Blake Brown has 311 yards on 25 carries in the playoffs.
  5. I must admit, I was completely wrong about Martinsville's chances in this game. Bright future seems evident for the football program. Makes 2A even more of a daunting task for anyone seeking a title. Best of luck with the upcoming basketball season.
  6. I will agree with you on that. Maxpreps is ridiculous!
  7. The calendar aspect of the site is very accurate and very well maintained. And yes, parents, myself included, love that fact. Doesn't mean the rosters are maintained to the same standard.
  8. I did take a look before my previous post and it isn't accurate. My guess is, it was copied and pasted directly from the "football preview" the Galax Gazette published in August because it is eerily similar. Knowing both the writer of the football preview and the AD at Galax, I believe it may be a little gamesmanship. A coworkers son (#40) is listed at 5'-11" tall and weighing 185 pounds. I stand 6'-1" tall and look up to him and it isn't close. And he is NOT under 200 pounds. George Wythe fans can verify Isaiah Brown isn't close to being 5'-11" tall , weighing 185 pounds. If that kid is a pound under 220, I would be shocked and he is also taller than myself. For the most part, Galax isn't leaps and bounds bigger than the roster indicates but there are some glaring inaccuracies. It doesn't matter anyway. Martinsville is playing Graham, not Galax. In my humble opinion, Graham will win handily.
  9. I am not sure who posted the Galax roster on the MED website but I can assure you, it isn't accurate for height, weight and in some cases, jersey number. That's not to imply Maxpreps is accurate. Maxpreps is rarely accurate and if they are found to be, it's likely by accident.
  10. This is my absolute favorite aspect of golf. Parents know very little about it so they don't bring their personal agendas to the matches.
  11. I don't pretend to know the situation and I never considered the superintendent and school board serving Graham and Richlands as well. My fault for speaking rectally rather than logically on that regard. Something has to be the issue for Tazewell to have had that many coaching changes in such a short span of time. It can't be completely on the coaches. I also understand fan bases can be difficult at times but I would be more concerned if the community didn't care at all. A healthy balance is key to a successful program. As I said earlier, I don't know Shane but do know of him through mutual friends. Something to note, Shane did spend a decade as an assistant under Tom Hale.
  12. Wow! Says a lot for the school board.
  13. If you look at a school as an organization, in terms of a typical business type structure, it appears to me school board and superintendent are ill equipped to make those decisions. That many swings and misses in key positions shows a glaring weakness in upper administration being able to correctly evaluate talent, keep talent, and provide that talent with the best opportunity to succeed. Again, outside perspective with the limited information given on this board but that much turnover says more about those who remain rather than those who have left.
  14. I don't know much about what local teams have coming back but will share the following. Will Lawrence from Grayson County signed a letter of intent to wrestle at VMI. I don't know the kid personally but he was always the most respectful young man when I refereed/umpired his games before he dropped other sports to focus on wrestling. He is 88-10 over the past two seasons with a state runner-up and state championship at 152 pounds. His respect and manners are what I found most impressive though.
  15. I don't know Shane well but do know him through friends. At some point, the situation becomes toxic and potential coaches with options aren't going to be willing to take a chance on a program that can't get out of it's own way. At that point, potential coaches without other options is all Tazewell will be left to choose from. And those coaches are generally out of other options for a reason! Looking at the situation from afar, it would appear leadership struggles making personnel decisions causing them to waffle and shift directions rapidly. Could this be the root issue? I don't know but five coaching changes in nine years seems like a bit much. Best of luck in the search....again.
  16. Insert your choice of Ryan or UVAO's "Transitive Properties" comment. To which I would sincerely agree!
  17. Any such yearly award should be based on the merit for that year, not past performance. Otherwise, it becomes a lifetime achievement award. Verducci's piece on Scully in May was as good as anything I have ever read. http://www.si.com/mlb/2016/05/10/vin-scully-dodgers-tom-verducci-profile
  18. Incredible information yet again BR, thanks. A few things jump out at me..... 15 of Galax's 18 playoff victories have come since 2010. Grayson County/Independence/Fries is 4-22 all-time. That surprises me to be honest. Dan River couldn't have had much of a playoff history prior to Ferrell Edmunds. Glenvar couldn't have had much of a playoff history prior to Kevin Clifford. Magna Vista has amassed an impressive playoff record to have only been formed in 1988.
  19. Tom Verducci should win the National Sportswriter award for his piece on Vin Scully alone.
  20. It certainly does come across as "a lot deeper"!
  21. I agree every fan base has overzealous "fans". What I disagree with is having a differing opinion doesn't equate to "hate" or lack of respect for Hurley's program.
  22. I don't have a dog in the fight. Coach Dixon has said many times, Hurley's coaching staff gets more out of less than anyone else in SWVA. He has the utmost respect for the program. With that said, I certainly hope the players don't share the same inferiority complex as some on this and other threads seem to exude. If they do, they will not be playing very much longer!
  23. Must give Mr. Anderson proper recognition. He was closer on the Abingdon Northside outcome than anyone else in the state. I still firmly stand behind my previous comments though!
  24. Galax will not be very good. I wouldnt put them on a top 20 list with the above mentioned teams. A lot of talent in the 6-8 grade range though. Grayson County will be much improved with a new (old/former) coach and a 6'-5" transfer from Stokes County, NC. Grayson will be relatively young but very talented. Carroll has a new coaching staff and lost a lot to graduation. Hard to know what to expect. Still speculation at this point but that is my thoughts.
  25. Robert Anderson is a very nice and knowledgeable high school athletics fan. With that said, most of Roanoke and the surrounding area is very parochial. Like most small media markets, they pander to their base. No different than the television stations in Roanoke.
