With George Wythe coming into the MED, I expect GW-Galax to become one of the regions best rivalries in every sport very quickly.

Won't get an argument from me. Galax could have done much more with the field, seating, restrooms and concessions with the staggeringly rediculous amount of money they are spending on the turf and storm water collection system.

Bluefield - Graham is the best. Played every year since 1938. Come to see it. Party starts at 10 a.m. Tailgating, live music, radio station remote broadcasts. When any other game can claim that then come talk.
Great rivalries that are just a cut below but still great.
Richlands-Tazewell: I know it hasn't meant much lately but this goes back to 1926. Played every year but 1943 when the war caused the board to drop teams at Tazewell and Richlands. For whatever reason Tazewell has always put more emphasis on the Richlands game than Graham.
Bluefield - Princeton - goes back to 1924. How many schools can say that they were actually banned from playing each other in any sport for four full years? Bluefield and Princeton were not allowed to play anything from 1966-1969 due to the intense rivalry with misbehavior on the field/court and in the stands.
Virginia High - Tennessee High - Goes back to about 1915?  This would be right there with Bluefield-Graham if the Bearcats were better and if the festivities were there. There was a time when they shared the same field until Gene Malcolm came along.
Honaker - Lebanon - I attended one of these once and it surprised me the level of animosity towards each other. Got a lot better when Honaker got better.
Abingdon - Marion - played every year usually at the end of the season and the series is very close.

    Some other good ones.
    Twin Springs - Rye Cove
    Narrows - Giles
    Galax - Grayson
    George Wythe - Radford
    Giles - Blacksburg
And then those that have died.
Appalachia - Powell Valley - every bit as good as Bluefield-Graham. Such a shame it is gone.
Welch - Gary - The battle for the barrel. Always played on Thanksgiving in the early days and Veterans Day in later days. Bands, Cheerleaders ,etc were in the parade and then went to the game.
    J. J. Kelly - J. I. Burton.  Again such a shame it is gone
    Haysi - Clintwood

Conferences are gone.  It's a 4-region set-up as it was in years past with a few caveats.  Several districts in our area have/are changing significantly.  Specifically, the Mountain Empire, Three Rivers and Southwest.

Georgetown hasn't made a Sweet 16 since I was in college.  I turn 32 in October.  Seems relevant when putting Georgetown on a pedestal.

Georgetown would certainly be his best offer thus far, but that is a program that John Thompson III has driven straight into the mantle of the earth.  BTW, if you really want to piss a Georgetown fan off, ask him how many Final Fours Daddy John made without Ewing.

I said it several pages back, it would be hard for me to pass up an opportunity at any Ivy League school.  It's instant credibility regardless of field or profession.  Not to mention the networking that comes from being a member of the Ivy fraternity.

It carries no prestige, and is openly mocked, outside the confines of western New Jersey.  The top students in that area go to Temple, at worst.  UPenn is about 30 minutes down the road, too.  And in a state that has Princeton as its premier university, Rutgers is treated like an afterthought.

I'm pretty sure the one's faster than his time were hand timed...according to VHSL record book the three that were faster were back in the 80s, I think a 10.1, 9.9, and 9.9.  I noticed there were also several 10.4 times listed but those could have been anywhere from 10.40 to 10.49.

I said it on the Chatbox, but I'm fully convinced that one could create a strong D1 program exclusively of players from SWVA.  We as a geographic location don't do very much competitive athletically on a national scale, but we do churn out softball players like our lives depend on it. Just look over the years at Tazewell, Richlands, Honaker, and Galax, among others.

Bowflex doesn't make you stronger, it only tones muscles. Muscle Milk isn't the answer either. To put on mass, the proper caloric intake needs to go beyond the calories burned.  If he is working out four times per day, he better eat like me if he wants to put on mass...

Be aware, it's never just one thing when dealing with permitting agencies for purposes of construction.  Stormwater collection, treatment and effluent systems will be required to some extent before any turf surface is allowed to be installed.  A stormwater collection system necessary to meet those permitting agency requirements will cost a quarter-of-a million-dollars minimum.
When the turf needs replacing in 10 years, the stormwater system will again have to be brought up to meet whatever the requirement is at that point.  The old saying is, new governor, new stormwater reg's.  It's a vicious cycle that will never pay for itself.

The "something" I mentioned before that has gotten the attention of city council is very likely the fact that this appears to be a coordinated effort to attempt to force city council to pay for the football field renovations.  City council has made it clear, school board will have to figure out how to pay for the field on their own.  The $1.7 million dollar winning bid was accepted at the school board meeting Tuesday night.  Yes, you read that right. $1.7 million dollars.  Many grade levels at Galax are making due without textbooks yet school board approves this fiasco.  Shows where priorities lie.
Many, many local residents have lost a tremendous amount of respect for Dixon for this "orchestrated-strong-arm-tactic" (city council members words, not mine), myself included!  It's time for local residents to elect city council members who are willing to fix these issues with school board rather than ignore them and hope they go away!
