BigD4VT 11 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 Been reading Facebook reports about a 5.9 quake near Charlottesville. Friends in Richlands, Richmond, and Raleigh have made comments about it. I'm in Abingdon and I didn't feel anything, although I was driving at the time which might explain why.

Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 Yeah, felt it in Central PA. Same fault line that gave me my first earthquake experience in April 2004.
GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 Felt nothing between Tazewell and Richlands and our office shakes when big trucks go by on 460. Wife felt it in Bluefield. She called me at 1:55 (according to my computer clock) and was like "Did you feel it? Did you just feel that earthquake?" I thought she was full of it and pulled up the USGS website and sho'nuf, 5.8 earthquake between Richmond and C'ville.

CarrollCavs78 10 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 In Richmond here, felt it really good in my 2nd floor apartment. Shook for a good 30 seconds, I'd say if I had anything on the walls it would have fell down. First earthquake ever.

1inStripes 933 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 Felt it here at work in Wise. It just seemed odd, and I thought maybe I was having a spasm or something. Then coworkers started asking if anyone else felt that. Had to evacuate our corporate office in C'ville.

Guest The Variable Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 5.9 north of richmond and we felt it here in staunton for about 5 -6 seconds a lot of fun i thought About 20 seconds here, probably 30 miles from the epicenter as a crow flies. I was on the phone with a shop and was more annoyed at having the call interrupted.
RichlandsAlum 678 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 yea a couple of spires fell of and one is broken ^^^ This damage report was related to the National Cathedral, not the Washington Monument.
VHSLhelper 571 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 (edited) maybe they were monumental spires ???? ---- Saw that Waynesboro High was evac'd for a short time Edited August 23, 2011 by VHSLhelper
RichlandsAlum 678 Report Share Posted August 23, 2011 My experience in Bedford was very similar to the 2003 quake (whose epicenter was in nearly the same place), so I wasn't too freaked out by it. Although this one seemed to last a pretty long time.
