Ridgeview wins this one, but closer than the experts will predict. Marion has yet to play a complete game this year; at times their offense has been on fire and their defense has let them down, and at times the defense has been stout and their offense has been anemic. Their backs (Ford and Marston) have started to catch fire since they've begun incorporating the I-formation, but the team has let close games get away from them in the fourth quarter all year, mainly because of inexperience and a lack of size. This is easily the smallest Marion team in recent memory, not to mention they have an entire stable of underclassmen skill position players.

Marion doesn't play coalfield/plateau teams all that often, but they almost always tend to play "up" when they do--ask the folks in Big Stone Gap. I would guess that it will be close until the fourth, and Ridgeview pulls it out. 
 
Oh, and don't worry Tiger, you all should see a much better Marion team when you all cross Clinch next year ;)

I've heard that as well, but I'm not sure there's much that a coaching change can do to help them at the moment; just a dip in talent that should fix itself in a couple years. It is an awfully big coincidence that the drop off in victories coincided with a coaching change, though.
 
But anyway, this game has the makings to be a trap game for the Rebs. Stuck between Rural Retreat and Marion, they could potentially sleepwalk a little in this one, and if Humphreys can't play, or isn't 100%, that could tip the scales a little closer toward Holston. Still, I think PH wins comfortably, but not the bloodletting that a lot of people might expect. I would take a stab at the score being in the neighborhood of 28-0.

PH's football program has been turned around by Coach Palmer. PH is no longer a push over. There are a lot of schools that would love to have Palmer as heaad coach, especially the one at exit 35 from what I am hearing. PH will be to strong for the Cav's. PH by at least 14.

Seriously though, it could really go either way. I think that they're just about even in talent, and I believe that Marion may have the edge in coaching, but their inexperience could bite them. I'm leaning toward the Dawgs, but that could change by Friday.

I absolutely hate the "give 'em all a trophy" society that we live in, but the other extreme can be just as, if not more disgusting.

And that in a nutshell is why a lot of well qualified coaches don't coach anymore. Whether it be peewee, little league or at the varsity level and beyond, a lot of the parents are complete idiots.

My wife has a good friend whose son is playing peewee football for the first time.  Their team isn't bad but they hadn't won a game so far this season. 
 
We went to one of his games.  They played great. They had a really good running game and a stout little defense.  They scored three times and converted on all PATs and won the game 24-14!  Their first win of the season! 
 
All the kids were extremely happy and excited after winning the game and came running off the field all smiles and excited.  As the kids were coming around the fence to go find their parents, one kid, I'll call him #6 came running up to his dad beaming with excitement.  #6 had just played a great game, scoring a TD and a PAT plus making a ton of tackles on the outside.
 
Anyway #6 comes running up to his dad and says "dad, since we played so good and won, can "Johnny" come with us to eat?", as he was referring to his teammate who was with him.
 
First words out of his dad's mouth, "Well you didn't play that good.  You missed several tackles and let that one kid score a TD on you."
 
Needless to say, this little kid went from sky high to rock bottom in a matter of moments.  You could see tears in his eyes after his dad had just deflated his spirit.
 
I was shocked. I felt like punching that dickhead right in the neck for how he treated his son at that
moment.  Makes you wonder just how bad that kid has it when he does screw up.
 
Anyway, as I walked by the kid heading toward the car, I patted him on the shoulder pads and said "you played good #6", he looked at me with a half-hearted smile and said "thanks"....

Some parents need to learn they are 5-7 years old and playing a GAME. This isn't the NFL. It isn't college or high school ball. He is supposed to be out there having fun and that's ALL that matters at this stage. Someone should punch that guy in the throat. 

I enjoyed the "We Still Hate You" chant from the Abingdon student section after Abingdon allowed 21 unanswered points, and Marion was taking a knee. Say what you want about the Falcons, they're still plucky in defeat.

Yeah, they might just skip football in Smyth County this year. I would imagine that Marion will easily win the County championship, but I would cap their wins around "6," and expect somewhere between a 4-6 and 6-4 record. I hope I'm wrong, but man, graduation was not a friend this year.
