Why in the hell is Tazewell playing Montcalm? 

You encountered the GC bandwagon fans back then. Anytime GC is supposed to be good they come out. Likely be awhile before you see them again. 

The longer we're at Ridgeview the more I hate everything about it. Loved the grass at Ralph's house. The worst fields I've ever played on were St. Paul and Hurley. I hate watching games at Ridgeview 163 feet from the field, I could see about as good from my porch at home. Gate City fans back in the day were the worst I ever saw. They seem better now for whatever reason.

UVA Wise/Emory & Henry - should happen every year. How these schools let this series get cancelled is a mind blower from a financial stand point. 
JIB/Wise Central - Great historical rivalry. Norton and Wise will always be a heated contest. 
 

I'm a Richlands fan when I'm not a Ridgeview fan, but Ernie is a dump and needs renovations badly.  Sorry.
That's the biggest complaint I see on Ridgeview, that you are so far away from the action.  Also, when you're on the home side in the early season games, the setting sun nearly blinds you as it's right in your face.
Ralph Cummins for the final Haysi/Clintwood game ever was just a fantastic atmosphere to be in.
My fave 5 would have to be:
1. Sandlick (Haysi)
2. Mitchell (Graham/Bluefield)
3. Stone Castle (Tennessee High)
4. Bullitt Park (Union)
5. The Cliff (Hurley)

Didn't list my drunk concussions as I wasn't really certain they were concussions or just days long hangovers...

You can say what you want about not winning a state title but there were times when nobody in single A wanted to come to Haysi to play. Not getting into the trash talk, but I'm proud to have been a part of it. Just as proud as those of you with rings. Every program has defining moments. You don't need state championships for that.

Well said big ugly vol. I can agree on all of the above moments. For me personally though, it has to be my jr year in 1987 vs Clintwood at Sandlick. We won and it was the first time Haysi beat Clintwood in the programs history. Families with ties to both teams didn't talk to each other for months. Clintwood beat us in the playoffs that year though.

I would say this play linked above would be it.  Only other things I can think of are the 2 point conversion against Galax in 2014, the FG by Allen Owens as time expired against PV in 2005, or the game winning TD pass against Clintwood in the final seconds in 2013.  (I missed that 2013 Clintwood game because I injured my knee at work that same week, so I have still never seen this play, but would love to)

Kinda surprised there hasn't been more mention of Thomas Jones. Very little mention of any linemen. Luke Owens and Mike Compton come to mind pretty quick.

I know their fans like our and richlands are top notch...but 12 damn hours before kickoff is crazy and IMO stupid...but to each their own

The states may have seceded to continue the institution of slavery but the men who fought and died for the Confederacy did so to defend their homes from an invading army, they fought because it was an "us versus them" mentality, they opposed the Union because what do those people up in DC, up in the northern cities know about me and my rural life, what right do they have to tell me to do anything? 
 
When teams are nicknamed the Rebels and when they're depicting confederate soldiers they're not representing the southern elite, they're representing the common man. The battle flag represents the men that fought against insurmountable odds to defend their homes and refused to quit. The men that owned no slaves and just enough land to scrape out a living. Men that did not own slaves. If Hurley's mascot was a man with a whip I would agree 100% but that's not what it is and to make that equation is ridiculous.
 
Is there racism and hate associated with the flag, yes of course. Is that what the mascot and flag represent, in no way. The KKK marches with the Christian and American flag as well as the swastika, does that make Christians and patriots racist? No.  Are people that fly the flag supposed to just turn it over to racist idiots? No, they're fighting for it.
 
Slavery may have been the key states rights issue but its still a states rights. Its still why should the slight majority get to determine the direction of the of the slight minority?
 
parsons, you're not as educated on the matter as you think you are. What you're doing is giving your personal opinion and presenting it as irrefutable fact, when its not and you flatly refuse to see any other perspective.

I kinda like how everyone comes after Hurley about the flag...it might be one of, if not the last places in the country it's still flying high...it's gone from South Carolina, which I never thought they would cave and remove it...but, they did...then there is little old Hurley sitting over there with people trying to force them to make it go away, and they just give 'em the middle finger and move on lol...you have to love that.

As far as the game goes, it happens,that's life...sometimes someone else is going to better on any given day. Hurley still had a great season, nothing to be down about at all..I know they wanted to win State and thought they had a legit shot at it...but in the end 11-1 is still a great season.
