Small? I've heard he was short but built like a brick shithouse, even as a young kid. His dad wasn't a big guy but he was stout and not slight at all, I assumed his son was kinda the same.

Looks small to me but he's young

Oh I agree. I think KW had the two best players and Claiborne was clearly the top guy. RHS couldn't stop him. But some on here believe Riverheads wins easily.

Yeah to think they'd dominate 3A and 4A ball is crazy it's the same people who'll say Alabama can beat the Jets or Jags it's just ridiculous.  I used to think when I was a kid Appalachia could beat the huge schools out East but I was 10

Official: Robert Casto has informed Riverheads High School that he will retire from teaching at the end of this school year and from Coaching Football after 26 years. He ends with a 261-59 record at RHS including 9 State Championships.

Riverheads will carry an ongoing streak of 50 consecutive wins (Best active streak in the nation) and 6 consecutive State Championships (VHSL Record).

He was obviously forced to retire the guy only won 9 State championships in 26 years that's terrible 😆

I’ve heard that 2, but I know that Central was built to hold a lot more students than currently go there. Union may be the same way but I’ve never been in there.  I think the Norton community has its feet dug in more. Plus the county didn’t do much of a remodel at Eastside. You're right about the landscape of the county. But I'd say more likely than not Eastside will be gone before Norton.
It's all just a guess though.  I wouldn't be shocked to see some counties try to combine at some point in the next few decades.

Union and Central schools are pretty much identical

The problem with John Marshall is the advantage open enrollment provides for them.  Richmond is an open enrollment city like Charlotte.. Their numbers are accurate, but they have a players coach that runs the AAU team, so kids in Richmond, as long as they can get there, can go to thst school even if outside their zone. There's no way to compete with that. They are basically getting the best of Ricmond which is choosing from 225,000 citizens within the city limits of Richmond.  The kids that play AAU ball on their main travel team in the summer want to be around and play for that coach come fall/winter.

Formula for Winning in Any High School Sport- Make sure either your Head Coach or Assistant Coach is also the local AAU area Coach or has very, very close ties with the AAU coach in an open enrollment small city or big city and if you look around the country, it often works out very well in every sport that this rule applies.

Ridiculous they're playing AA ball  Oak Hill might as well play in 2a at least everyone can get their ass kicked by D1 talent

since the beginning of the arby's,  you can count on one hand teams from southwest va that should have been in this tourney and could have gave a good showing,   the only team i saw recently was the GC squad with mcclung, ervin and dean.   after those 3 that team was nowhere near par either.   the southwest va teams are always entered one year past their prime.

Well it's kinda hard to beat teams that are sending 3 and 4 guys D1 and recruit.  Only reason local teams are invited is for the money at the gates.  Most people in our area aren't gonna watch schools from the Bahamas or Georgia no matter how good they are

I caught Wise Central and Ridgeview girls last Saturday in the Arby's Ladies.

I think they split the season series and finish in a tie for first in the regular season... both looked real good.  Depth could be a factor for Ridgeview though.  Had a couple injuries against Hampton Saturday and foul trouble.  Luckily they got out to a gigantic lead, because down the stretch they were done and gassed and were just trying to get to the finish line.

Man I don't know Central looks like a state championship team to me.  But I've not seen Ridgeview yet either so they could win I guess

There was fierce competition at WR this year.  Will go down as best WR year in recent memory if not ever.  Webb is a D-1 signee and was bumped off by two Jr’s and recognized as the 4th best WR in region.  That’s nuts.

I'd say the 5th and 6th best receivers this year would be 1st team most years.  It's the best group I've ever seen and I'm getting old

Mance is one of my heroes.  I love the guy.  He's a winner, from the time he was a player to a coach, and more important, to the kind of person he is.  The conversation was centered more on his coaching situation versus where he lives.  It's very relevant to this board because Mance is a Giles guy and a Richlands guy.  He's one of SWVA's very own, and lets face it, High School Football is over for this year.  Have to talk about something.   Also, we've talked about Powell Valley's Phil Robbins and even Turner at Appalachia many times including Graham's Carlock and Ragsdale at Giles.  All of these names have since long been removed from coaching, but we still talk about em.  All of them put the work in and did enough good that their memories, those people deserve to be talked about some.  They earned it.

That's fine to talk about his stint at Richlands and his success but it started going in a completely different direction towards the end

Appy, PV, Clintwood, JJ Kelly, Jonesville, Lexington

Convington is closing/consolidating with Alleghany County

Extra Bonus: Although the building is the same, the name is different, so technically I guess TC Williams is no longer a school, or maybe it is.  Depends how you want to define it, but it could technically be 7 that have won titles since 1970 that are no longer open.  TC Williams won a title after 1970, but is no longer called TC Williams, it's now called Alexandria City High School

TC Williams is who I was thinking.  But didn't know if he was just talking about 1a and 2a.  You'd think they'd be some big schools out East that has done it
