Auburn pulls away from Chilhowie, wins by 22

I watched the 4th qtr of GW and Honaker.  GW with just several literally wide open 3 point shots and the ball just rims out.  It happens.  Teams go cold and 8 minutes is a short quarter, only 32 minutes in a HS basketball game.  With that written, got to credit Honaker for scoring more points than GW.  GW is very good defensively and Honaker put up over 60.  Honaker deserved to win.  It wasn't a fluke

Anytime a team from 1D takes out a team from 1C in any sport it has to be a fluke..

Yep, I didn't get to gox due to work.  Heard it was 51-23 at the half.  I've said before, for Narrows to keep up with the likes of GW, Auburn, etc., all 3 scorers have to be hitting.  I'm guessing all 3 must've been off.

I watched some highlights. GWs defense is probably the best I’ve seen in awhile. Narrows didn’t shoot bad, they just didn’t get to shoot enough. If GW can find a way past Auburn I think this might be there year.

Does Highland even have 5 men in their entire school? Haha

I never even heard of them until I was working the Region 1C Championship track meet at Giles last year. I had to go to an official to make sure Highland was a real school lol

Running clock in the 2nd half

    14-1, 6-0

Next up: Highland at Narrows tomorrow

Is Narrows and GW still playing next Saturday? With all the games that got postponed last week I wasn’t sure if it would affect that one with it not being a district game.

Big week coming up with JCA at home Monday, Roanoke Catholic at home Tuesday, and Parry McCluer RD 2 coming to our barn Friday.

They’ll handle JCA and RC with ease. The PM game should be a good one

It's not football related but these kids work hard and deserve to be recognized somewhere.

Mia Llamas from Galax is starting on the swim team at California Baptist University in Backstroke, Freestyle and IM. Mia was a 6-time VHSL State Champion. Four consecutive 200 Meter Freestyle and two consecutive 100 Meter Backstroke. CBU is a member of the Western Athletic Conference and compete at an elite D1 level with numerous Olympic level performers throughout their lengthy history. She has appeared in every event so far in her freshman year. Her dad was a professional MMA fighter.

Phoebe Fant from Galax has accepted a partial Rowing scholarship at UVA. She will likely graduate Valedictorian in a few months. Incredibly bright young lady with a future in medicine. Stands over 6 feet tall and is the most impressive, well-rounded athlete I've seen in my time here. She's also the drum major for the Maroon Tide Marching Band and captain of the MACC team.

I’ve had many conversations with Fant over the years in track. I usually work shot-put and discus for the home meets at Giles. She is a good discus thrower with a great attitude and is very respectful.

  7. As far as 1A/2A I say that most of the head coaches serve as one or the other. Narrows and Radford are probably one of the few schools that has an OC and DC that isn’t the head coach.

How good is Radford as a program? It seems they have been consistently good the last several years. They have some advantages with the local economy and the student body close to the school since it’s a city school. Has it been simply a good run of athletes or do they continue to produce talent. They have had exceptional talent at QB and skill positions.

Not sure about what’s coming up. I watched their JV team against Giles. They seem to have a lot of speed but lacked discipline. They were tied 6-6 with Giles at the half but Giles blew them out the second half 50-20. I’m sure they will still be solid but they won’t have another Clark anytime soon

It's stuff like the train horn that make high school football awesome and unique. I'll chip in gas money to haul that thing to Galax next fall.

As long as Galax allows it, it’ll be there buddy!

    1. Graham. The arrogance, the recruiting, the facilities, the colors, the name, the t-shirts, the band, the love for them on here, etc, etc. Red Sox fans hate everything Yankees, so I will hate everything Graham.

    2. Wise Central. Terrible name for school and nickname, the drive sucks, the fans, field is nice tho.

    3. Giles. The offense and the train horn. I don't mind Union's train horn bc they havent complained about it for almost the entire 2023 season.

Honorable Mentions: Richlands- Personal Reasons. Any school that has a terrible drive, especially over the mountains and thru the woods. (Buchanan County, Ridgeview, McDowell County)

Cant wait to hear the hate back for having an opinion.

Watch yourself Dan, you don’t disrespect the Spartan horn. I will come to Pounding Mill and blow it outside your house all hours of the night.

No one in the state lost their minds as bad as Kelly Wilmore (Grayson county superintendent) did when that field goal bounced over. Especially after stating that his coach when he hired them had never lost to Galax and wouldn’t in the future.

He actually threw the challenge flag for Essex after the kick.

  12. 12 minutes ago, sixcat said:

That's exactly why Galax plays the schedule they play and will continue to do so. The Galax kids know they can handle four quarters of physical football. The question usually is, can their opponents. Essex didn't have an ounce of quit in them. Galax pounded on them for four quarters and those kids kept coming back for more.

Galax graduates 4 seniors that saw action Saturday night. The starting center being the only lineman. Galax usually goes as the line goes so that should be solid next season.

Difference between Galax and Grayson. Galax will be the preseason favorites and will actually back it up.

  13. I done the top 15 strength of schedule. Didn’t feel like doing anymore lol.

    1. Giles -6.6 (MED)
    2. Galax -6.7 (MED)
    3. George Wythe -13 (MED)
    4. Grayson -13.1 (MED)
    5. Buffalo Gap -14.3 (Shenandoah District)
    6. Fort Chiswell -15.1 (MED)
    7.  Rural Retreat -18.6 (Hogoheegee District)
    8. Westmoreland -20.2 (NND)
    9. Honaker -20.8 (Hogoheegee District)
    10. Cumberland -21.6 (James River District)
    11. Altavista -22.4 (Dogwood District)
    12. Auburn -22.5 (MED)
    13. Colonial Beach -23 (NND)
    14. William Campbell -23.2 (Dogwood District)
    15. Grundy -25.2 (BDD)

LOL, yep, Giles held Radford to 35 so it certainly means Giles was one of the better defenses Radford played all year.

Much like the Glenvar argument, the Bluefield Beavers nearly beat Graham and this means Bluefield could have stacked right up with Radford and might have been the 2nd best team in Class 2 Virginia this year if they were in Virginia.

P.S. Don't pay attention to the Giles and Bluefield overall records or the other 9 games played, let's just cherry pick one data point, make a conclusion from it and stick with it, because we don't do "fallacy."

Giles and Graham are also the only teams to hold Radford to 7 points in the second half so you could say our defense is just as good as the G-Men!
