The Heritage coach was correct. Below is from the NFHS, and VHSL has similar guidance. Having said that, virtually no high school announcer is totally unbiased. Announcer’s Responsibilities: The announcer’s role does not include “cheering the home team on” or otherwise inciting the crowd. Doing so is common at other levels of athletic events. But high school athletics is different because sports are educationally based. In a very real sense, the public address announcer at a high school event is a “Champion of Character”. He/she can influence the atmosphere of the contest by what is said and how it is said. The announcer who performs professionally promotes good sportsmanship by what he/she says and how he/she acts upon saying it.

Golf is a game of inches. A couple of made putts can change the outcome. That is, unless you're Castlewood and win District by 97 strokes.

Winter is Coming

IMO, it's unlikely to happen unless VHSL takes the lead. This isn't wealthy NOVA schools and parents that have the clout, time, and resources to advocate VHSL to sanction, for example, lacrosse. The small schools that are struggling to field a team are not in a position to develop and organize a new interscholastic sports league.

Back in the day, there was no place worse than Gate City. Hostile and aggressive fans would sit next to the visitors' section, circle the track, or hang around the opponents' side concession stand. They'd incessantly taunt and harass adults, children, cheerleaders, band members, and football players. The old steam engine train whistle (The Blue Cannonball) was parked nearby, which only incited the crowd even more. Basically, the only Gate City people not found in the visitors' section were law enforcement and GCHS Administrators.

The issue is copyright protected songs that could be overheard. There is a workaround though. Music recorded prior to 1922 is not protected, so stadiums could play early jazz or opera without consequence.

IMO, I think additional polls would be unnecessary and redundant. It's simple enough for anyone interested to separate out the 1A teams in the order of their total points. 1) Galax 2) GW 3) PH 4) Giles 5) Narrows 6) Holston 7) Rural Retreat... But I'll participate regardless and appreciate you heading this up.

Richlands was the only ranked team to drop-out from Week 2, and Central was the team that replaced the Blues. Last week, Central (50), Narrows (44), and Patrick Henry (40) were the top three unranked teams. The "Also Receiving Votes" was not reported this week, but I'd assume PH is at or near the top.
