Ms. Ruby Wolfe & Mr. Stan Rogers we’re hired right out of college. Mr. Rogers graduated from Bluefield College in 75. Mrs. Rogers (Wolfe) May have been hired a year later after obtaining an advanced degree. The dates should be accurate.

Stan Rogers was a class act to me!! I played against him in baseball when he was coaching and I enjoyed talking to him before and after games.

  2. Personally I think they would take someone off the streets before they would have Akers back. Politics and people’s feelings need to be put on hold, and hire someone for the job that will take it head on and do their own thing and not let anyone in GC control their actions!!!!

  3. If I am thinking of the Union Assistant you are, I just can't see him going back to Gate City or see him being a head coach for that matter. I have spoke with one coach that has coached at both places and he said he was just happy to be back on the field helping with the kids, and he didn't see himself ever being a head coach after a stint in Tennessee.

I just find it hard to believe that Darren Reed will not be selected, considering he left Abingdon with 2 months to go before the start of the season. My opinion is he knew something at that point or he would have not made the decision to come back to GC.

I have also heard that Houseright is being thrown around, and if that happens it will be a big blow to Rye Cove. Houseright has made a difference at Rye Cove as far as coaching and getting the players fired up and playing better. I'd like to see him stick around the Cove for a little bit and see how they will do over the next few years.

I would assume a decision will be made soon, and we all possibly could be surprised by it.

  4. Unions Defense obviously done it’s job by pitching a shutout, no matter who you play, anytime you get a shutout it’s worth talking about!!!

As far as Unions offense goes, if the running game ain’t working and they get behind you can just about count them out. Not developed a passing game by week 10, and I don’t see it developing by week 11, so hopefully Jenkins and company in the backfield can get things going early and the defense can pitch another shutout or limit scoring!!

  5. I have watched all kinds of high school football this year, and the actions of some of these kids are ridiculous!! I understand celebrating a big hit, a great offensive play, or a big game changing play, but this pushing, shoving, punch throwing, and taunting has got a bit out of hand. Some referee crews I have seen this year take care of it early in the game and don’t put up with it. Then some referee crews don’t take care of it early in the game and you have a dog fight all night which leads to ejections and fighting.

Coaches in this area need to step up and make kids face consequences that are more stern than just a slap on the wrist.

I don’t know the kid personally but I did enjoy watching him play, heck of a football player and athlete. If film shows him throwing a punch then I think he needs to suffer the full extent of consequences, if film shows he didn’t throw a punch, let him play, and find out which referee crew it was and look into some consequences for them.

You know who's name should be out there.  Garrett Amburgey.  granted he isn't a 1A or 2A coach but the only 3A team in the coverage area usually gets overlooked.

Amburgey has only lead a team to much success this season that a lot of people considered out and in a rebuilding year with the coach getting the job 2 days before two a days.  Regardless of what people think, Amburgey has lifted Abingdon to new heights and energized the fan-base.

Agreed, Amburgey has took the Falcons to another level this year. I've not seen them in person but watched a little bit of the Union game on TV, and they looked pretty good. Hopefully they can win a few games in the playoffs.  He definitely has a solid foundation after his 1st year at the helm, and a great job has been done on such short notice.

  7. Lets get some input on who everyone thinks the coaches of the year should be in Region D 1A and Region D 2A?

1A - I'll have to throw Thomas Walker head coach Nick Johnson in there, to take a team that was 2-8 two years ago to 7-2 this year and very well could of been 9-0 and 2 back to back playoff appearances. Hard to not throw out a vote for Johnson. Jimbo Adams is always in talks with this as well, because he always has Norton in the playoffs and ready to make a deep run.

2A - Someone throw some names out there in 2A, of course Rick Mullins at Ridgeview is always in question for this.......but who else would you guys nominate

  8. McCamis has a torn ACL and will miss the 2018-2019 basketball season. How do you all seeing Central finishing this year without McCamis in the line up.  They still have a solid core of players returning, and I am guessing Elijah Hayes will be the starting PG now. Anybody else have any input on this situation at Central?

  9. All you referees on the board and those who are Friday night bleacher referees, my question, is it possible to be called for targeting as you are running the football, and a defensive player is approaching you to make a tackle?

I’ve seen it called, and then I’ve talked with other people that sees the other side of it too. As a running back, on contact most are taught to lower their head and shoulder pads and make the defensive player pay for trying to tackle you.

I would like to hear other people’s thoughts and comments on this.

I understand the rule and don’t have anything against it because I know it is mainly for safety, but I believe it needs to be looked at more, into if it was on purpose or if it was a bang bang play and someone turned/lowered at the last second and it could not be avoided!!

  10. Houseright has made a big difference in the Rye Cove Defense. At this time last year Rye Cove has not even been in ballgames, and this year they have been in a couple ballgames that could of went in their favor. I’d love to see Houseright take over the Rye Cove program and bring a few more in to help him and I believe with a few boys Rye Cove has returning they could be a 4-6 and 5-5 possibly 6-5 in the next two years.
