I just wish Abingdon weren’t playing a team that shouldn’t even be in the VHSL to begin with.

Fire the coach? As a member of a competing fanbase, HE SHOULD BE GONE TOMORROW!! Seriously though, with all his success, he has not done a good enough job? You seriously cannot expect to be playing for the State Championship every year. Fans/Parents like to blame the coach when the season ends but he's not on the field executing the plays. Union kids play hard, mistakes are made every game by every team, they are kids. To think the coach is the one to blame for not being as successful as you think they should be is ridiculous. Now, there are times in games when clock management and a few other things come into play and it falls on the coach but that guy has had a lot of success. I'd prefer to not battle him every year so you all be sure and push him out because he's not winning enough games.

Here’s a hard pill to swallow:
Union is good but not the juggernaut that people in Big Stone think they are.

Graham better figure out how to limit his yardage and tackle him or it may be a long night again. The kid is a work horse on the field. I think Graham is playing better now than the first game with Union but finishing the regular season against weak teams & lack of reps may hurt the GMen against Lomax & Union.

I just don’t understand why this kid wasn’t recruited more heavily. In the Graham/Union earlier this season, on that particular night, he was the best athlete on the field in my opinion.

From what y’all are saying Union needs an overhaul on special teams.

Special Teams can make or break a team.

    That's the half 21-21.
Union attempted a FG, and Va High nearly ran it back. Geez!

Anyone that has observed Union since 2011 has noticed 2 consistent things each year. A huge number of adult bodies on the sidelines, and attention to detail in some games (time management, silly penalties, special teams breakdowns). The sidelines need to be cleaned up. There are too many people down there that don't need to be there. I think this causes chaos and unwanted distraction during games. Also, we've have/had coaches involved with the program (from varsity down) that simply don't need to be. A lot of discussion was revolved around a former DC, but there are others. As head coach, this ultimately falls on Turner's shoulders, but I think he's too nice of a guy to get rid of some of this dead weight.
Do I think Turner needs to go? No, not necessarily, but some changes are in order without question.

I see this at a lot of games around here for some reason. A player shouldn’t have more than a couple or voices telling them what to do on the field. The big thing Turner needs to fix is bringing the QB to the sideline every play. That’s would fix most of your time management issues. Rick Mullins was a great coach, but that always annoyed me because it was worth at least 1 time out a half every game.

I think it's a situation where too many people "want to be a part of something", and they don't realize they aren't qualified. Like I said, Turner is too nice to tell them no. And I get the QB to the sideline thing to slow the game down and eat up clock, but not in critical situations. You don't run the QB to the sidelines when there's 2 minutes to go before the half and you need a score.

He has beaten everyone in the region, he has guided the Bears to the state semis , Appomattox has beat us every time , but who have they not . A injury here or there has kept the Bears from making that next step. You know Graham wishes he would go somewhere else

When did they start playing playoff games on Fridays.  I don't ever remember a Friday game in the 90s or even before 2010

I know the receivers in the region are loaded.  Jenkins at Union is great and won't even make 1st team.

Battle will shock the mtn 7 this week. Union has got worse thru out the year. The line couldn't block 5 blind women. And the defensive coordinator couldn't gameplan for a pnut football game.

I know Unions sucks.  Anything past 20 yards is missed and for some reason when a player walks past 50 they teleport to the 45

After film,  it looks as if union does have a 3 man front,  outside guys on line are lbs.  If they can get back to what they do well,  make people adapt for them on both sides of the ball then it could be a very interesting game. I like the fact that winning the district does have a little more importance this season.  Good luck to both.

I can remember playing in the good old days, and after you played Friday night, we went in Saturday morning and watched the game film. Sometimes it was embarrassing to see how dumb you looked on certain plays, but it definitely was worth it as far as improving football IQ, and showing you what you needed to do to improve!

I agree with you, but just saying from watching the game, the DE's definitely did not attack the OT........heck the whole defense didn't really attack anything that night. I will give it to #50 he played his tail off against Central!

Yes, it would work.  In that defense, the OLBs were some of the most athletic guys on the team (if you don't have those types of players to put there, the D struggles.  That's why lots of smaller schools struggle to run that defense).  As far as covering WRs, the CBs took the widest receivers.  If there were multiple receivers to one side, the OLBs split the difference between the last guy on the line and the second receiver from the outside.  If he started hurting the D, then the OLB would walk all the way out to him.  The safety usually had the TE, and that was the weakness.  If the TE started causing havoc, the weak ILB would end up in coverage on him.  The weak ILB always had a drop on passing downs anyway.  Actually, all the LBs had a coverage area if they weren't sent on something else.  That said, against pass heavy teams who hardly would run, PV would occasionally go to a 3 man line with a single DT shading the center to the strong side of the field while replacing the other DT with an extra LB.  That was the alignment used in the 1989 Region D playoff game vs. Coeburn when the record for interceptions in a regional playoff game was set with 6 picks.
