Cant forget the 2014 games vs Richlands with the score on the last play of the game from Tanner Hall to Bryce Spears to complete the 21 point fourth quarter comeback... led to the Bryce Burger, or the Lee game from that year, the infamous catch/no catch from Austin Jessee on the final play.
Yes Sir...2015 was when I started to come back to the area and watching UNION and decided that I would bring my son to play football here..
I can say that this has been some of the BEST times since he started at UNION!!
*On the point about great plays/games...SOMEBODY knows something about PV/APP games..LOL*
The rivalry was like 20+ years like the HATFIELDS & McCoy's...Lots of story's
Honest question to the group? For a couple of years I've heard JIB was going to be closing, If not that's fine...But I can see them talking to the Eastside coach maybe wanting the job?
When Union went to Dan River in the playoffs, And I saw Bailey Turner throw a bomb to James Mitchell between 2 defenders to win it at the end of the game. Wow!!!
Grayson has a lot of talented kids with some very good size currently in 9th through 11th grade. If they can replace Hollingswoth at QB, they will be fine. If I'm not mistaken, the probable starter at QB will be the Cassell kid and he will be a sophomore. I graduated with his uncles. His cousin is the Cormany kid that plays basketball at Radford. Lots of talent in that family.
Galax will be better this year than they have been over the past few years. They will have an influx of freshmen with some incredible talent.
Keep in mind when assessing what Galax and Grayson have within their JV programs, they don't care about winning games at the JV level. Many of those players never even play varsity football. Most 9th and 10th graders play varsity at Grayson and Galax. It's a necessity given the drop in school enrollment over the past decade. Grayson had 10 of 29 varsity players last season listed as freshmen or sophomores on the roster on the district website. Galax had 14 of 32.
I don't have much of a horse in this race but, I have some family in Grayson. They feel good in what they have coming back for 2019 and competing 1A
On another thought and subject I feel Carroll Co will go 500 or better in regular season for 2019... Any thoughts on this?
1. I feel this year that Graham (Last years state champions) has a lot of returning players, and will be the team to beat until someone knocks them off.
2. Abingdon will do really well playing 2A teams around SWVA; until they have to play 3A playoffs.
3. Ridgeview will have a nice team returning, if they get everyone back.
4. Pretty much from here, Union, Richlands, and everyone else has a lot of work to do to compete. I'm not sure how things are going to turn out after the top 2-3 teams.
I agree with what SXSW says above regarding CTE / concussions, etc. At the same time, I feel that the group on this page are all die hard Union fans, and we believe this young man needs to play football. Hopefully, some of his teammates will speak with him at the end of school and over the summer, and potentially change his mind before the season kicks off next fall. But I wish the young man all the best with whatever choices he decides to make. If it's not him, hopefully we can find the right person going forward at quarterback.
Glad to see the young man get the opportunity to show his skills. The clips and reports I saw (News, Utube) he's going to get a good amount of playing time this year...
Go Cougars! We lived in the Vance attendance zone the last few years that we lived in Charlotte. And although we didn't have a direct connection, we were counselors for our youth group at church and a lot of our kids there were part of the first classes at the school. Attended many games in the earliest days of the program, so it's nice to see them do well.
Yes Sir..
I 2nd that, I hope Vance can pull it out and knock Wake Forest off this year..My son played with a couple of them boys in Spring Football from Vance...One of the boys he played with is at Missouri now, he's a LB..I can honestly say that we're he learned Hard Hitting from and he lost couple teeth...lol
AM not sure who to ask...But are anyway we can LOCK this post out..seems like a lot people are mad at each other over it...Also it all OVER now...Their a new coach...and good luck to Gate City🏈
Yeah that's about exactly the scenario I heard, Elizabethton next season for the time being and then go from there with SH being a possibility.
But I dont believe anything is finalized so things could change.
FWIW, I don't wanna make things weird or speak out of turn so I'll be vague here, but your family (I don't know how much you wanna let people know) absolutely floored me this season. He is young and raw, but man he is fun to watch. The term I use more often than not is heat seeking missile. Once he finishes growing, his body develops and he learns the more complex parts of the defensive scheme (he came a long way in one season, coming in fresh with no history with this staff), I think he can be a very, very good football player. I absolutely love his emotion and clear desire. As someone who is also uber competitive, I totally understand and I really enjoy seeing a kid who cares so much about his team. Not about himself or his personal stats, but the simple act of seeing his team succeed. Union has been lucky enough to have a ton of kids like that, but most were raised here and have been together for a long time. For someone to come into the system and buy in fully so quick, it's admirable.
I'm not a coach, teacher, booster, or some old dude who has been around for years so my opinion truly doesn't mean much, but I don't think I'm the only one who has been impressed.
Thanks BigWinners and all the Union fans that spoke to me after the games for the shout out for him,
I feel that Union will have a really good defense next year...On the offences side we still need to plug in some players...(Meaning the boys need to work hard in the off seasons to feel some of the gaps)..This is my opinion only "Coach Turner is a great mentor and leader for the boys at Union"...For what he's taught my SON in 5 months hands down, Him and his stuff has brought him to the next level...
And there a lot of people that know me from Union...I have told all the KIDS that spoken to me that there NO OFFSEASON IN FOOTBALL NO MORE!! ITS... 24/7....365
So I was at my uncle's business in Wise.... And I saw support the Warriors sign...I ask how can you pull for them, When you have a nephew that plays for Union...But me being a good sport..I understand why...😔
But I told him when I bring the Union Bear Banner up...I will move the Warriors banner to the back of the building😂😂
Hough got revenge on a seemingly unbeatable Mallard Creek 19-7 Friday night. My brother said Hough has battled through injuries all season but are healthy now.
They play Vance Friday..at Vance...That will be a great game🏈

Yes Sir...I saw it on the score board show....I was shocked to see it... Good for Hough...I hope they finish strong???
I just spoke to my uncle that's 1st cousins with Amburgy...They just talked over the holidays...and said he didn't mention anything about it...(coming back to Wise)
They are very young and there will be moments where the youth shows. There will also be some moments that make you go “wow.” Andy Jones at QB can straight up sling it. Reminds me a lot of John Luke Asbury from Richlands. The backfield will be very, very strong aswell.
I hope the team as a hole does other sports/and other types of training in the off season...I know this week I got old #44 pulling a couple motors & transmissions this week...That's what I call HOMEMADE weight lifting..we been doing it for many years💪👍🏈
And I think Union may surprise people next season. The offense will be totally different but there is talent there. I'm excited to see what kids like CJ Jones can do with a year of experience and Jones is super talented. But losing players like Avery, Falin, Bailey, Bunch, etc... Will be hard to replace.
Greatest/Most Impactful play..
