All I here from you two lugnuts are emotion.  You give ZERO reasons as to how the numbers you give ARE what they ARE, or the WHY behind the numbers.  That's the part that you two don't seem to get through those thick emotional skulls.  I can assure you, if Giles were go 10-0 next year, Williams would be the greatest Coach in the world again and he would all of a sudden in your minds, "be refocused for 2023."  You two basically don't know what you are talking about and everytime you post, you make arses of yourselves.  99% of reasonable people on this board over the years know and understand (and have stated it) that Giles has a talent problem compared to where we were.  It's absolutely noticeable.  You can only coach a 180 lb left guard so much.  You can only coach a 135 pound running back and safety so much.  That guard or safety could be incredible also, but when he goes against the 230 lb Galax defensive tackle, he's not going to win, or when the 140lb safety goes to tackle the 200 lb plus Galax running back, he will get that tackle some, but sooner or later by the 2nd half, he's not.
Our line has been noticeably SMALL the past 6 or so years.  I know it's a stretch for you two, because you would actually have to THINK back 10 years, (not easy for many in 2022 because EMOTION trumps any rational thought) but if you are able to do it, compare the differences in size from those teams and now.  Forget about looking at the starters, just look at the team photos.  I know this hurts because if you can "feel"<-----your driving force that Giles has a coaching problem, then that's a "simple one person problem" and it sets better with you emotionally.  If Giles has a talent problem, then that's a whole other ballgame.  You know that it's not a one person fix and that it's a deeper and more complicated thing to fix, and that bothers you because you aren't in as much control emotionally anymore.  Richlands has gone through the same thing the past 5 or so years and their fans are now realizing it.  They are even finally admitting on this board that the talent simply is not what it once was.  These talent cycles happen.  It's a real thing whether you want to admit it or not (and you don't.)  You are giving concrete numbers (which are good numbers) but you aren't giving the accurate meaning as to the WHY those numbers are that way.

It's weird that presenting a talent cycle or talent up or down scenario is some "foreign" concept to you. That's equally comical. You don't even acknowledge talent levels. It's completely off the table to you. You don't acknowledge numbers/student population. Ragsdale had way more to choose from and he had no social media interference or cell phones for most of his career, and once a program was rolling, keeping it that way was easier than today.
You are giving valid numbers without giving valid rationale as to why those numbers are what they are. Williams has done well, especially early on. You do NOT go from being a great coach to a poor coach. In your emotional mind, you may feel different, but by in large, it doesn't work that way.
I think you are a little concrete, and never fully reached formal operations with reasoning. Add in the 2022 emotional based par-for-the-course argumentative style, and it tells me you don't know Shit from Shinola

We have a talent drop/talent cycle down this is the culprit. It's Obvious guys. It's Obvious. If you've watched Giles football for decades, you can see with your eyes and know when we have talent/talent cycle up and talent down, or talent medium (which is where we are now). We will be back. Our coaching is solid in my opinion. Future looks good at Giles.

You are ALWAYS going to have that small crowd that will constantly blame coaching. They are in every town. They are on every message board. From Giles, I present the two tokens....Stranger danger (who's time here is limited) and 1wingit23.  We've seen a couple from Appalachia/Big Stone wanting Turner fired. The world is full of tokens. It's scary though...we let em drive and vote. Thank God we don't let em become nuclear power plant operators.

What's more plausible is not 'what's possible", but what is Obvious and clearly in front of your eyeballs. Our talent level is nowhere close to what it once was, and home fans and away and neutral fans have been commenting on it on this board for years.

I'm not convinced KWs defense is much better than Galax's defense. Offensively, far better, but defensively, if KWs defense is better, it isn't by much.
Galax has been good enough the past few years to have won probably 2 more state titles in the normal history of VA single A or class 1 ball, and they've been unfortunate enough to have a great run during the time that Riverheads is now flirting with national win streaks and VA HS all time type records. It's kind of bad luck in a way for Galax who is an absolutely elite class 1 program.

Difference in track speed and route running and route defense. Richard Sherman is one of the best to ever do it, but only ran a 4.56 forty. D'Angelo Hall once won the fastest man in the NFL contest, world class forty speed,, yet his covering ability nowhere close to Sherman's. Add to that Bradshaws athletic ability and his hands, ability to High point the football, and route running, jumping ability, and that can still be a major miss match for a Div 1 running back to cover a Div 1 wide receiver. But, no way to know for sure until they play. Unless a team has a sure Div 1 Defensive Back, I think it's playing with fire trying to cover Bradshaw 1 on 1.

BR, you only got me mad one time last Saturday.  That was in the third quarter when you called Ridgeview, "Ridgewood".  That was a slap in the face to me, because at that very moment, upon calling us Ridgewood, I was wishing I was back home in Blountville and heading to Ridgewood barbecue instead of watching that tail kicking the Pack were taking.  😄

Winter is here and Covid is raging again. The new variant is also here. Hopefully, the 24 teams left in the VHSL playoffs don't get caught and have their seasons abruptly end. 12 of those 24 only have 1 more school day before their seasons end, so it's likely no team will get hit with the Covid bug tomorrow at school.
Numbers are skyrocketing and the virus is once again, seemingly everywhere. I made this post early in the season and want to make it again. If you are a player, stay away from other High School Students for tomorrow and the next week if you win Saturday by ensuring 6 feet. Think about everything you have worked for.. When the non-football playing student comes down with Covid at school after going to school all day, then deciding to tell someone he or she is sick after being around 100 people, if you are a player, you do Not want to be a part of that contact tracing. You don't want to be one of those that is counted as an exposure. There's only 6 school days between now and the state title game for 12 out of 24 teams.
I don't encourage skipping school, but if you can get an excused absence, now is the time to take a couple. Head on a swivel boys, because if not, your season can end quickly, even this late in the playoffs.
    Just my take.

Same for Tony Palmer.  He's not winning like he should be.  In those 13 wins, those scores should have been a lot worse.  Time to get him out of there and get in somebody that knows what their doing!!  Oh yea, Doug Smith at Appo, he should have been fired for not winning that title in 2018.  No excuse for not having more titles.  I don't know why Appo keeps him.

Some states let private schools compete. Some don't. Personally I think that they have no business competing in public school leagues. Apples and Oranges as far as rules go for enrollment. However I do like private schools and if I had the money and the opportunity I would seriously consider putting my child in private school.

No problem with LCA.  Class act school in my opinion doing great work, but they have an advantage compared to public schools of the same size.  They have the ability to literally recruit players at a rate that is better/not on the same playing terms as public schools.  So, if they are going to compete with public schools, they should have to give up some kind of an advantage they have, or to put it better, the public schools should get some kind of advantage to counteract the one a school like LCA has.  In my opinion, that should mean making them play at least 1 level, maybe 2 levels higher in classification.
Here's another solution.  If your a private school and your competing with public schools, then not one of your student athletes is allowed a tuition break, and you have to pay full tuition like every other student if you want to compete with public schools.  This immediately takes away about 90 percent of the recruiting advantage.

NaugistBigsby reacted to BandanaVTDavis4321 in Graham resurgence. What came first, coaching or players?
And whether people not just in SWVA or Virginia or around the country want to admit it or not, it usually does work that way.  It's the coaching, then the players that follow.  I've read so much over the years about some fans that think or somewhat believe the coaches at school A got together and decided to go on a recruiting binge when they are not a very good program, and then based on the recruiting binge, they are now a great program.  It just doesn't work that way 9 out of 10 times (taking private schools out of the equation where it does happen there).  With public schools the overwhelming majority of the time, you have a great coach, who is already trending the program up in wins, and he wins some more, and kids want to play for him because he's a players type coach, and the program is already solid, then the cycle repeats.  You had some Graham kids that went to Richlands when the Blues were dominating, and odds are, those kids stay put if Graham back then was Graham today.  Graham's got some Mount View kids.  Let Mount View win the state title in WV in 2017, and 2019, and Graham likely gets LESS Mount View kids.  It's that simple in my opinion.  If Graham goes 5-5 in regular season for the next 4 years, and Bluefield wins 2 out of 4 state titles over the next 4 years and plays for and loses another in those 4 years, guarantee ya Bluefield is getting a couple transfers from Graham.  Of course, Graham isn't going 5-5 on average over the next 4 years, but as for Bluefield, well, that actually wouldn't surprise me if they won 2 out of 4.  That's actually realistic, or the least, very possible.

One more thing about offensive coaching.  Lee High and Union both, according the the Bluefield Dally had 247 total yards against Graham.  Yes, much of Lee's was in the second half, but a big chunk of Union's was in the 4th quarter against backups as well.  Lee has 1/3rd of the talent as Union, yet Lee's starters against Graham's starters moved the ball nearly/about as effective as Union did.  Sure, Lee could have got 100 hung on them, but it's still an example of a DIFFERENCE in offensive scheme coaching in Lee High's offensive coaching and Union's.  Again, just my opinion.  So, as for the Union poster who started the thread asking or questioning Turner's removal, I think it's borderline insanity.  But, as for offensive changes needed?  Very valid, and the post would have been far more potent and taken with much more seriousness, if it would have said something similar to this, "Does Union need to do something different offensively or make offensive changes."  Only my opinion.

I think Turner is an incredible coach.  Any discussion about a new coach with Union is crazy in my opinion.  But, with that written, I never buy into the argument that you hold onto a coach that you don't want, or a coach who isn't doing a good job BECAUSE you can't immediately answer the question of "who would we get."  I just can't go with that logic.  If you are bleeding, STOP IT.  We don't decided whether or not to stop the bleeding based on which band-aide brand we can get or not get.  If I'm hurting, I want to stop hurting, and I don't make the decision to keep hurting or stop hurting based on whether I have Tylenol or Motrin available.  I read this rationale some on techsideline where there are actually people in favor of keeping Fu because "they weren't sure if we could get a better coach or not."  Again, what we know is....Fu is terrible, so get rid of him first, then worry about whether we get an upgrade or not.
With the above written.  It totally does NOT apply to Turner at all.  He's a fantastic coach.  One of the better ones in Class 2 Virginia in my opinion.  Does he need to do something different on offense?  Yep, that's valid critique.  Tons of great coaches can make tweaks and do some things different, but that's a far cry from replacing the great coach, and Turner is a great coach in my opinion. On Turner and offense, just my opinion here as a fan and I'm not coach, but I know this.  You can be conservative (which Turner's philosophy clearly is) and you can be diverse at the same time.  For example with Union this year, you have a fantastic athlete at QB.  Why not a few QB read options, reading the defensive end, a few more screens, etc.  The offensive critique is valid in my opinion.  As many times as defenses just absolutely sell out on Lomax, can you imagine the problems that would be created for defenses if the QB lines up in the gun, takes the snap, and reads the defensive end and if the defensive end bites, the QB keeps the ball.  <-------That's just one example of how you can still be very conservative, but diverse and forcing the defense to be a little less aggressive.  There is zero reason in my opinion only, why a play such as that shouldn't be in Union's arsenal.  But, a coaching change?  Get real.
A team should NEVER be playing a goal line defense on you as a First choice, it should be as a second choice such as on the goal line, or after they have been absolutely gashed and have no choice.  Spurrier wrote that in his book.  Watch the Graham game on NFHS with Union.  Again, watch the game because you aren't going to believe this.  Literally in the first quarter, Graham is essentially playing a goal line defense.  They have 10 defenders in the box on most plays BEFORE the ball is snapped.  When this is Graham's first choice of defense, you absolutely have to do something offensively, be it formation or play calling, read option, screen, hitches, something to take them out of that defense.  Graham stayed in that defense all game long unless Union had 2 and 3 wideouts.  When you get a situation like this, it's more than just Graham being absolutely terrified of the run and doing whatever it can to stop the run.  Yes, that's part of it, but the other part is, they don't respect your playcalling.  They don't respect you enough to believe you are going to be diverse enough offensively.  Remember the QB keeper from Union in game one at Mitchell Stadium that went for about 50 yards early in the year?  That never happened in game two.  Never attempted.  Never called.  Remember the screen pass Lee High caught Graham with that resulted in a huge gain?  Sure, Lee High was blown out, but that's an example of a conservative play call that offsets an aggressive defense that doesn't trust you will be diverse enough offensively.
