As far as the schedule for Hurley it was done 2 years ago and they are lucky to get 10 games. Why don't you contact Coach Tester and see if you can help them schedule some better teams I'm sure he'd let you help out.
 
Remember you'll need to know what kind of team you'll have two years from now and how many kids you'll have to field. Usually runs 18-30 kids over 4 grade levels but the population is shrinking with the demise of the coal industry so you'll have to figure that stuff out as well. Good luck.

Sarcasm aside, you're not the first to say it. The truth of it is that they don't have any idea even 2 years out who will be on a team or how many. One or two mines could close and the team might be half the size and good players gone to Richlands or beyond with their family looking for work. It's just how it is now. Factor in the location and even Grundy has a hard time getting a full schedule most of the time, people complain about the drive. it's a longer and worse drive to get to Hurley so people aren't lining up to play them, although they should because everyone should play at the cliff at least once if possible.

Haysi was always in the same boat. Hurley plays all of the similar sized schools around, and why would 2A schools play them? This Hurley team would beat most of the 2As in the area. Without the matchups being traditional theres no reason for 2As to play down. Add to that the drive which is a long one. No one wants to play there. Its not like Hurley is dodging tough competition.

The states may have seceded to continue the institution of slavery but the men who fought and died for the Confederacy did so to defend their homes from an invading army, they fought because it was an "us versus them" mentality, they opposed the Union because what do those people up in DC, up in the northern cities know about me and my rural life, what right do they have to tell me to do anything? 
 
When teams are nicknamed the Rebels and when they're depicting confederate soldiers they're not representing the southern elite, they're representing the common man. The battle flag represents the men that fought against insurmountable odds to defend their homes and refused to quit. The men that owned no slaves and just enough land to scrape out a living. Men that did not own slaves. If Hurley's mascot was a man with a whip I would agree 100% but that's not what it is and to make that equation is ridiculous.
 
Is there racism and hate associated with the flag, yes of course. Is that what the mascot and flag represent, in no way. The KKK marches with the Christian and American flag as well as the swastika, does that make Christians and patriots racist? No.  Are people that fly the flag supposed to just turn it over to racist idiots? No, they're fighting for it.
 
Slavery may have been the key states rights issue but its still a states rights. Its still why should the slight majority get to determine the direction of the of the slight minority?
 
parsons, you're not as educated on the matter as you think you are. What you're doing is giving your personal opinion and presenting it as irrefutable fact, when its not and you flatly refuse to see any other perspective.

Have you ever read the secession declarations, the secession convention speeches, or the confederate constitution?  Lol, what states' rights not  related to the preservation of slavery did  the average soldier fight for?

I don't even have much else to say about it so have at it and I couldn't care any less if you like it or not or agree with it or not...I'm sick of the politically correct nonsense in this country. It's old and it's weak.

You seem to have a knack for being "right."  I am starting to see a pattern here.  You have to be a progressive....I am right, all who disagree are wrong!!  Your comment comparing the Confederacy to Nazis is ridiculous.  Plenty of Confederate dead in local cemeteries that died as Americans.  Most confederate soldiers were too poor to own slaves.

First of all, before you try to twist my post(s) and label me a bigot or racist, which I AM NOT, the right side won. The Nazis with Hitler were  close to world domination and the extermination of Jews.  Hitler was the aggressor and those were his goals.  The Southern states were defending state's rights, they were not trying to dominate the world or exterminate a specific race of people.  Germany had the means to accomplish their goals, the Confederacy did not.  By that, I am talking about their industrial advantages.  The Confederacy had no advantages, with the exception of Robert E. Lee, who was defending his home. 
 
I hope you are not going to compare Jefferson Davis or Robert E. Lee to Adolph Hitler. 

This all started a few years back when someone told you that you should be offended by the confederate flag, before that no one cared...we all watched the Dukes of Hazzard, we looked at the old monuments in the Southern States, Hurley had it as a mascot, and no one really cared...at all...until you were convinced by the liberal politically correct factions that were left over from the Clinton years that it was a racist symbol...no one cared. 
 
If you see it as a racist symbol, then that's fine...but just because you or anyone else is offended by it doesn't mean you have the right to tell an entire town that it's wrong when they've had the thing in place long before the media manipulated people in to thinking it was something offensive.

I kinda like how everyone comes after Hurley about the flag...it might be one of, if not the last places in the country it's still flying high...it's gone from South Carolina, which I never thought they would cave and remove it...but, they did...then there is little old Hurley sitting over there with people trying to force them to make it go away, and they just give 'em the middle finger and move on lol...you have to love that.

As far as the game goes, it happens,that's life...sometimes someone else is going to better on any given day. Hurley still had a great season, nothing to be down about at all..I know they wanted to win State and thought they had a legit shot at it...but in the end 11-1 is still a great season.

well they are the 10 seed and on the road playing a higher seed...so...what do you expect? Still a decent year and a something to build on.

Couple of things...after the Hurley game, I was worried Grundy might have a hangover...they didn't, the kids were all in a pretty good mood and seemed to have moved on, even at the end down 49-13 or whatever and cleaning up what was left of the game with a rolling clock they were all still pretty happy over there? Didn't seem to bother them. Myself, I hate to lose and it frustrates the HELL out of me to deal with games like the last two weeks, but I was glad for the kids it didn't really seem to get them down and the starters were out having fun watching the younger kids/backups play...which, that's how it should be...so congrats to them on that, mentally, that's a big thing as I'm 45 years old now and still haven't figured that one out myself yet.
 
As for Richlands...great team, would love to see them play Hurley @ Hurley this year...would be great if after everything was said and done with the season there was a way to make that happen on a Saturday night...would be fun to see how that turned out....one can dream huh?
 
Another thing about Richlands, and they've been doing it for years...I have no idea why no one takes advantage of what they give you....but, if you go to an unbalanced right formation, QB under center and your RB up close, not back 7 yards off the line...then run everyone (flow) right and give it to the RB going back to the weak left side...there is no one there...you are one good block away from being in the secondary 1 on 1. Richlands always over shifts the LB's to the strong side...I just don't get why no one sees this and attacks it...it's not something you can line up and just do every play, I'm sure they would adjust quick to it...but it's always there and on a 2nd and 6 or so what do you have to lose? One of the few weak spots I've found and it's been there for years.
 
Richlands has a good team, they played clean...Mance is a class act...they have the program in place that others should be looking at and trying to incorporate things that work in to their own programs.  Grundy might be the only team around that played two state champ quality teams back to back in the regular season...hope we can get back in the win column next week.

Grundy is causing fumbles and INTs this year every week....what you're saying here is like saying "if we had scored more we'd have won" lol.
