What would be downright comical is if you had something good to say about Hurley, instead of your negative remarks all the time.

Is see Hurley playing with a lot of pride and determination. Sure they are not the same team as last years squad, but from what I have seen on tape, their QB is an outstanding player. If Chilhowie plays up to their potential, Chilhowie should win by several scores. You have to tip your hat to Hurley High School folks. Hurley has 175 students in their school, and here they are playing again for a chance of  Regional title. That in itself tells me something about the character of Hurley's squad. Congratulations to both squads for making it this far, and we pray for no injuries.

Those look like relatively close games compared to how badly Bluefield will beat them next season.

Richlands and.... everybody.  During my formative years it seemed that every opponent was particularly hostile to us (even when we weren't particularly good -- which didn't make much sense).  But maybe that was just the nature of the old SWD.
The hatred of Richlands was somewhat understandable in basketball.  During the successful stretch beginning in 1982/83 we were beating teams more often than not.  And at home games we had a student section (the Krazy Korner) that was deliberately obnoxious.  But sometimes we were on the receiving end of animosity from sources that also didn't immediately make a lot of sense -- specifically Virginia High, Lebanon (although that subsided once they moved from the old gym in Cleveland), and Patrick Henry.
Otherwise there were specific sports and programs that had particular rivals.  Probably like everyone else, Grundy was the primary target in wrestling (although that was probably one sided because the Golden Wave usually had bigger fish to fry than any of us).  Band (yeah, seriously) bore some specific animosity toward John Battle and Pulaski County.  Graham was usually the measuring stick for both tennis teams.  And although it's not a specific example per se, our performance in the Coppinger Tournament was always a big deal in baseball.
Tazewell was always the main rival in all sports.  Graham and Grundy (due to proximity and long histories with each) were also targets of widespread scorn.  But the fun thing about those rivalries was that as much as we would beat the tar out of each other on the field/court and absolutely hated the thought of losing to those guys, we all had pretty good friendships outside of the actual contests and rivalries.  (And on a personal note, I still crack up when I remember how Cary Perkins would make a big show of turning off his hearing aids before he approached the free throw line.)

2004 was the weakest year in the 23-year history of R4D3.  Richlands was still in R4D4 (losing a state semifinal to Salem).  Graham was dealing with a rebuilding season post-Bradshaw.  Virginia High won the pitiful Highlands District with a 4-6 season.  Grundy was the only team in R4D3 that could be considered "above-average" (actually, that Grundy team was stellar, at 9-1).

Who comes out of R4D3?  A thoroughly mediocre Tazewell team that was the benefactor of one of the biggest screw jobs in VHSL history.  Grundy lost the 1st round playoff game to Virginia High 7-0 in OT, despite approximately 47 Grundy TDs being called back for some phantom penalty or other.

Tazewell beat Graham in some 17-15 sort of game that set the sport back 40 years, and unbeknownst to the world Glynn Carlock would be dead 9 months later.  Not the way he should've gone out.  Tazewell took advantage of their gift from God the following week and won to advance to the state semifinals.

Tazewell traveled to Gretna to face a team that obviously had their minds set on the following week.  Gretna scored 56 in a game where they really let up off the throttle very early.  Tazewell did score 28, most of which were points well after the competitive phase of that game had ended.

Tazewell's 2008 team was far superior.

We're back and ready to do some pickin'.  But first, as you know, we've been gone. The reason, Uncle Percy and his Bucket List.  Surprised me too. Uncle Percy decided that it was time to do something different.  Well, WE did.  More of that later.  We saw a lot of crazy things and people, but nothing as crazy as what's been going on with VHSL Playoffs, Tazewell High, Bu-chan-an County (Uncle Percy took a political correctness class in California), and other wild doings and rumors.  Uncle Percy says that we go on a trip and the VHSL screws things up worst than before. As Uncle says, never trust anything that has VHSL being used.

    RYE COVE @ HURLEY
We hear that last year was a big cannon boom for The Rebels and another down year for the War Eagles. We hear that the Rebs lost a lot of their fire power from last year. However, for this battle the Rebs will more than enough firepower for these War Eagles. Look for the feathers to being flying around like at a Saturday Night Kentucky Chicken Fight.  The Eagles will not break their losing streak at The Cliff.

Is it true or rumor that a former Grundy head defensive coach and another Slate Crik coach are coaching at Hurley?
    GATE CITY @  RICHLANDS
Another is it true or rumor. We get back and hear that this could be Coach Mance's last year at the helm of the BIG BLUE WIN MACHINE. If so, THE BBWM will get er cranked up and be at full wind force this Friday. As usual, The BLUE DEVILS will bring their A-GAME to R-TOWN thinking about sneaking a win back to THE DEVIL'S DEN, since the BBWM lost some Big Hosses from last year's team. However, these IMPS are in for a BIG SURPRISE, the BBWM is reloaded and will be at full force. Before this is over, these Devils will be wishing that they had wings so they could get out of DODGE as quick as possible after this tussle.

After crossing 6 MOUNTAINS and 5 Rivers The P Knob Cats get to play on an uphill slanted field in a semi-hole. This is no Rumor or Tall Tale folks, BUT THE TRUTH. You play 2 Quarters going DOWNHILL and 2 going UPHILL. Crazy but True. However, The Kentucky Cavaliers will find themselves going uphill all night and The P Knob Cats will be going downhill all night like a runway train. P Nob Coach, take the short cut, go to Elkhorn City, cut across to 23, turn left. Only 3 Mountains and 2 Rivers to cross.

FINALLY, after all the VHSL craziness, rumors, etc. that happened while we were away, SOMETHING NORMAL. As usual, the Warriors and Candy Canes will be kicking off the Smyth County Braggin' Rights Contest. Both teams we being doing a bunch of trash talking, trying to knock off the other's shoulder chip off, jaw smackin' contest. Look for the CANES to get in the last jaw smack of the night as they give the Warriors an early Christmas present of striped candy canes.

I played baseball for coach Altizer in 76 & 77 when we resurrected the baseball program and our first uniforms had the gray pants, dark blue tops  ( can't remember the exact shade name probably more of a navy )  and we had red hats and red shocks.  We just figured that they got those uniforms on sale somewhere.....lol,  but we were happy to have uniforms because we were not very well funded the first couple of years.
My lettermans  jacket back then was more of a Carolina blue but I like the newer navy blue they have now much better.
Man,  that first year of baseball was a little tough,  every one of our games were away games and double headers because we had no home field.  It was kinda nice in one way because we got out of school early on game days,  sometimes around 12:00 depending on where we were playing. Awwww,  the good old days.......sure do miss them !

olewave reacted to RichlandsAlum in SPECIAL REPORT: The new VHSL Configuration
All SWD members played each other from the time the VHSL realignment was normalized through 1979.  The 9 game district slate only allowed for one non-district match up, which was tight for some folks but accommodated longstanding rivalries for most others.
The addition of Lebanon changed everything.  While it would have been simple for everyone in the SWD to play an exclusive district slate, there was no agreement to do so.  Graham didn't want to give up its game with Bluefield.  Same story with Virginia High's annual game with Tennessee High.  From 1980 through 1985, the solution was that there was one SWD team (chosen at random, I believe) that you wouldn't play -- or that wouldn't count in the district standings if you actually did play them.  No fault of the Lebanon folks -- they simply had to go where they were slotted -- but that was the beginning of the end.
