What’s everybody’s thoughts on this one?  Based on what I saw from Monday’s games, I would think Adkins will get a ton of carries. Lee had a hard time moving the ball against Union and probably won’t have much more luck against a good RV defense that gets to the ball.

Unless Lee tackles better Adkins should run wild that being said RV really needs to work on there passing game. And rif they can get a lead they should work on it as much as possible

The 2014 team was loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. They made a deep run and probably should have won it all . But still, been too long... As a M7 fan, I would also love to see Lee High right the ship, but that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon either.

Watch a little of the Lee Union Game how young is Lee they look to have good size and did not look slow but had a lot of fundamentals issues they are a team that could look alot better in a few weeks if they can get there feet under them

New year same issue for RV.

All in all Everyone including the QB knows 5 for 18  is not going to cut it going forward but New Offence plus no preseason plus 30 degree temp may have amplified the problem.

I feel the QB is capable and as tough as it is in this compressed season he (and the team) need a few weeks to get comfortable in the Offence and feel comfortable making the throws that need to be made.

Did you mean schools that run the same system and have their starters back will have it tougher or easier? Seems to me like if you are doing what you did last year it will take less learning curve....

Unless you are saying that the teams with new coaches have the element of surprise?

    I am saying both.

Coaches with the same system and the same players should be ahead of teams trying to break in new starters with no preseason. However those Coaches should also be easier to game plan for

New Coaches like Richlands will be as a disadvantage personnel wise but will see more vanilla Defenses due to no film

Just about every game played this week is going to come down to 3 things

    1. Execution: There is no film study this year so game planning is tough this year. You can watch the film from last year (I know the Richlands regime from years past was big into that), but you are still looking at players that may not be there. Which ever team can execute the bread and butter plays against what I am going to assume will be pretty vanilla defenses have the edge.

    2. Conditioning: Which ever teams studs spend less time on the side line are going to have a big advantage. 3 weeks is not enough time to get into football shape and that all a lot of teams had. Hell usually the 5 weeks you have in a normal season is pushing it.

    3. Want to: It is going to be cold and or wet in most of these games. Which ever team handles that the best and plays the hardest will win.

Just my opinion but what do yall think?

I think that at this point the defenses should have a big advantage this week as Offences take more time to gel

For this week I think teams that return most of there starters from last season and run the same system may have it tougher than schools Like Richlands with a new coach bringing in a new system

  6. Seems like the game that should have the most juice this week with Richlands vs Graham being a non-District tilt

Central is returning 11 on a D that held Adkins and Ridgeview to 7 points at home in there last meeting given the weather I am looking for it to be a low scoring game. with the winner having a big leg up in the playoff hunt

  7. Week 1 schedule:

    Monday:

Central @ Ridgeview - Big game in the Mountain 7 Central is coming into this season as the favorite to win the M7 and there ball control Offence seems Taylor made for the Snow and sleet  that has been our weather for all of February so far Central returns al skill positions and will need to fill a few spots on the LOS, RV is breaking in a new coach that IMHO is a tough task in any situation but in a season with no preseason to get a fill for anything before playing a team like Central is a big undertaking however with Adkins and Philips returning in the backfield  and what looks to be a BIG OL we may see 22 players within 6 yards of the ball in a battle of field possion

John Battle @ Gate City - Gate City made BIG strides back toward being one of the Top Football programs in SWVA and it will be interesting to see if they can make another one this season and make a run at the playoffs John Battle is a good tune-up match for the Bluedeviles to get off on a winning note

Lee @ Union - No Idea what Lee brings to the table but I seem to think that they were young going into last season, Union lost alot but had good young talent last season and are a team that knows how to win I think Union is the favorite however with basketball going into game week Lee may have the upper hand in a week 1 matchup

Northwood @ Grundy - Northwood breaking in a new coach and Grundy looking to remain the to team in the BDD and one of the better in SWVA 1A

Honaker @ Castlewood - It is starting to seem like a long time ago that Honaker was a top SWVA team. That being said Hubbard's style of play relying heavy on the power running game will be great for early season weather

Hurley @ Rye Cove - No Idea

Twin Valley @ Twin Springs - No Idea

J.I. Burton @ Chilhowie - This has been a great matchup the last few years however Burton seems to be moveing back into the spot they held 10-12 years ago when they were at the top of Signal A

    Saturday:

Gate City @ Abingdon - Tough game for GC on a short week I think Abingdon will have an advantage because of this

Graham @ Richlands (Non-district matchup) - the 2 Top SVD teams get a feel for each other in week one in a game for the title (Sorry Tazewell) later in the season

Tazewell @ Riverheads - Riverhead is tough to handle year in and year out knowing nothing of there team this season I have to give them the advantage at home

Lebanon @ Honaker - If Lebanon can turn there program around they need a win over Honaker playing on a short week

Chilhowie @ Marion - Again Marion needs this week 1 win over a short week Chilhowie

Grundy @ Virginia - VHS will get a tough game out of Grundy but catching Grundy on a short week may turn it in there favor

Hurley @ Eastside - No Idea

Thomas Walker @ Twin Valley - No Idea

Patrick Henry @ Holston - No Idea

A wee bit tougher than Jenkins and Shelby Valley, KY!

Shelby Valley was a great team to play for power points a AA team that was 9-1 and 8-2 the last two years RV played them there is no doubt that Richlands will be a better team year in and year out but SV will consistently get you more Power points for a win

Pikeville and Bluefield are a wash Bluefield is AA and one is about as good as the other (If Pikeville keeps fielding teams like 2019

I think replacing Honaker with Grundy is a good move as I think Grundy will win the BDD and end up with 7 wins

Keeping Burton is they are the class of the Cumberland and depending on there out of conference schedule will be good for a ton of points

Region 2 D will be tough to call.

    Central and Graham for sure.

Battle for next 2 spots imo will be between Ridgeview, Richlands, Union and Tazewell.

I'll go with Ridgeview and Tazewell for those 2 spots.  Although wouldnt be surprised to see Richlands or Union.

Scheduling will be huge this year

Graham lost Bluefield and Princeton and should probably drop Giles and  Fort Chiswell and keep Union. They are forced to play Marion and Lebanon on district (unless they are allowed to not schedule them this year).

Tazewell Lost Bluefield, Mount View and Princeton.  Not sure if they would be better off keeping Grundy or Honaker.  Neither would help tremendously.  Maybe they can pick up a stronger opponent.

Graham cant keep Union in a 6 game season as all of Unions games would be District games unless Districts are dissolved for next season

I enjoyed watching their games on YouTube though and seeing the different schemes they used for multiple onsides in a game.  It was impressive.

What team/year I am starved for football 😞

In Dickenson county at least Avg Feb Temp is between 44 and 27 I know up on the ridge it will be colder I assume Central will be even colder

I like the Idea of moving all games to Saturday Day games I hope it is something that those in charge actually plan on doing

  12. 6 hours ago, JDHoss said:

I'd say it's unlikely there will be practices in 25 degree temperatures. The average February highs in Southwest, VA  are in the mid to upper 40s. I would also assume that games will be played on Saturday during the day.

Highs  in the 40's around 1 What will the temperature be around 6 to 630

Hearing VA may drop back down to phase II this week, what kind of effect will this have

No Idea the 1st season is 5 Months away 5 Month ago we were in a pre-quarantine America Not sure anyone could make a reasonable guess at this point in time

I heard one of the local teams was doing "travel ball" through local rec department and planning to practice at rec dept.  to side step restrictions but hadn't actually scheduled games to play. I would hope no head coach is "pretend playing travel ball" to skirt taking precautions. I agree it's not feasible or realistic to have high school level travel football.

However 7 or 7 would be much easier to get rolling

I am shocked that the administration at Ridgeview waited this long...They Hired the Right guy...Big things are coming to Ridgeview!

Same here I really thought he was the logical choice after Mullins stepped down I understand wanting to dot the I's and cross the T's but it could have given him a chance to get plan for the team before everything shut down

  16. 42 minutes ago, big ugly vol said:

I've heard there is no teaching position to give, because Mullins is not Retiring, just not coaching. SO then it would have to go in house. Not sure how true any of that is.

I was told that a teaching spot is coming open which could be why they delayed posting the job last month

  17. 1 hour ago, swva_havok_fan said:

Jason "Bubba" Edwards is a contender as well for the position from what I have heard, but he's already a co-ordinator at Ridgeview.  The guy I was talking about is actually at Union currently.

Bubba was in NOVA for awhile before coming back to Dickenson County.  I'm not sure at what school he was at up there however.

I was told yesterday that the School board vote this evening is only to advertise for the position.

Inside or outside hire that was going to happen before anyone is getting the job SO looks like it will be another Month before anyone is chosen for the job.

Dont get me wrong I want RV to make a solid choice but I dont want this to drag into the summer either

To the best of my knowledge, Ft. Chiswell hasn't made it to a state championship game. They did get to the semis 2 years before he took over though. It is certainly possible they would have posted the sub .500 records in '18 and '19 had he been there, but there's no way of knowing that. The only thing that is known is how his teams competed while he was there.

Don't know the guy, but posts on this forum and articles in the newspapers were very positive of his time there. But, hey, if the rumors are true, you won't have to worry about finding out what he does at Ridgeview.

Looking at the 4 season page the year before tiller took over Fort Chiswell went 7-3 and lost in the 1 round of the playoffs

Tiller year 1 went 0-10 if I remember correct (and I may not) Tiller took over last min as the head coach resigned right befor the season started

Tiller year 2 went 9-4 losing the region C Championship game to Galax

Tiller year 3 went 7-4 In there 1st  year as a AA school loseing to Giles in there 1st playoff game

1st year without Tiller 5-6 loseing in the 1st round of the playoffs vs Radford

2nd year without Tiller 4-6 No playoffs

Tiller was only 16-18 in his 3 seasons there but was 16-8 when he had an actual off season to prepare

No Idea what type of head coach he would/will make but nothing in his time at Fort Chiswell and his 2 years as an assistant at Ridgeview  throws up any red flags to me.

As to the timeing as I understand it the Schoolboard had to open up the search last month and will vote this month (Thursday I think) I am sure that whoever has gotten the job (Assuming that a choice has been made) knows already

  19. 48 minutes ago, swva_havok_fan said:

If so, he hasn't left Union yet.  He's still on the bench helping out the Union girls basketball team.  But that rumor has gained a little steam over the last week or so.

School board meeting in DC is tomorrow so I figure that if the hire has been decided the vote would be then.

The guy we are talking about is Jason Edwards right? I think he was a Haysi Grad other than that i really dont know much about him ie how long has he been coaching and where other than Union ect.
