  1. Its all about what's best for the kids and apparently accepting them from Eastern Lee and Scott Counties is what's best for them
  2. FROM Union to other schools you're probably right, but TO Union HAHAHA they've got 5 on this years team!
  3. I never realized just how much larger Science Hill and Dobyns Bennett are than most of their 6A counterparts
  4. Any of these on Saturday night?
  5. The field was actually in pretty good shape in 05 lol
  6. It's apparently a Scott County thing. Rye Cove has turned it around and I believe has guaranteed themselves a share of the Cumberland District title.
  7. That was 04, in 05 a pretty good Eagles team came to Haysi and took a whooping. They would have fared well in D1
  8. Coach Mullins became more predictable as his career went on: less misdirection, more downhill. Not saying it wasn't successful but it became more predictable, especially the wildly predictable TB Draw on 3rd downs.
  9. I know absolutely nothing of NC football beyond what you and a few others have discussed on here and that Mt Airy was at the GW Jamboree. I just don't see it, if they're (Mt. Airy and Tarboro) so good and that dominant then why are they still Class A? How is that system better if such good programs are still playing with the small schools? Unless they're not very good in other sports and that's keeping them in the lower classification. Feels like you're playing both sides here - this system will make competition better by grouping better programs together but also here are 2 incredibly successful programs that play in the bottom classification. Athletic department success has an influence on the schools overall classification? Central for example has had a dominant girls basketball program for a decade, why should that factor into boys basketball classification (their boys program isn't very good)? I fully realize that there isn't going to be a perfect system, I just don't see how the NC system is really better. I will say I think VAs points system is pretty good, usually things work out as they "should" without any crazy outliers, the problem comes in how many teams get in the playoffs and having too many classifications. The big issue the VHSL has is the wide range of school enrollments wouldn't be opposed to a 4 class system, WV has a pretty good system but their enrollments are much closer. IMO the simple answer for VA is to just combine 5A and 6A and keep them at 32 playoff teams while reducing 1-4A to 16 teams, and if teams want to play up feel free but playing down would be a rarity. That makes the most sense to me
  10. Under that proposed system yes, it wouldn't mean much. In that system neither Altavista or Essex would have been 1A when Haysi made their last runs 13 and 14, Galax may have also been moved up based on recent success. A championship would have been very likely but champions of what? Haysi has 5 state semifinals appearances in football, that's basically the best of the rest, which is what the proposed system would create. In a way it makes me appreciate the approach KY takes in basketball, yeah a bottom division team is likely never going to win a championship but just making it to the state semis or even quarterfinals is an accomplishment. Less, to an extent yes because we all know Westfield being the MUCH larger school would thrash Galax. '15 Galax stood above their peers, schools of equal size. That system also punishes players from dominant programs, with smaller schools talent obviously ebbs and flows. The kids caught in an valley pay for the success of those from the peak, for a season at least. Im looking at this from the perspective of an adult looking at a kids game, for the kids that's more equitable and makes sense in terms of competition but I wouldn't ever want to hear anyone brag about winning a championship.
  11. UVAO, sixcat I just dont agree with the concept. UVAO, your potential 2023 "special season" for Tazewell wouldn't have much meaning because the competition has been moved up. Yes, from a purely competitive standpoint its better and I guess thats what would be best for the players overall and what we should be doing. I just dont see the playoffs having any meaning in that scenario. Using that type of classification id be happier with a 12 game regular season and no playoffs.
  12. @sixcat So 1-4A, 1A champ would be the best of the worst and the rest are legit champs based on enrollment. Idk about that. I sure wouldn't celebrate as 1A champs. Then the next season the 1A champs are rewarded with being placed in their actual classification based on enrollment, just to go back to being non-competitive?
  13. Watching it on WCYB it was a noncontact injury which usually isn't good
  14. Rumor told to me by Appalachia blue bloods. Idk if its true or not, at this point no one probably does but the way I hear it he was born to poor black parents in Stonega (thats beyond refute) and in those days the kids of poor black coal camp parents were born at home with little verification.
  15. well the rumor always has been that the Stallion was a few years past eligible to play high school sports
  16. Not gonna lie, pretty excited to watch the G-Men and Bearcats from the comfort of my couch this evening. Are there any other games tonight?
  17. Ive heard about this several times, why Tazewell? Why not Hurley or Garden, Honaker or Haysi, even Richlands before Tazewell
  18. Galax @ Haysi 2014 - back and forth game between a passing Offense and a rushing Offense. Haysi scores late in the game an Colley has to decide to kick the xp and tie or or go for 2 and win, there was no decision. Colley went for 2 and the Tigers came out on top over the Maroon Tide for the second season in a row. Appomattox @ Union - 2 great teams in a tight game. Powell Valley @ Haysi 2005 - Only Tiger Region Champs game I ever saw. Wasn't the best PV team but Haysi was the underdog and won on a last second FG.
  19. A Odd front is a Odd front, doesn't matter if its a 5-3 or a 3-5, 5-2 or 3-4, its the same thing. The only difference is who the defense uses as adjusters the L/R or the Es. Edwards ran the exact same defensive look you're advocating for vs RV for a lot of the night, when RV was in their tighter sets(2 Wings and the WRs in close) the Union Defense looked almost exactly like the diagram you posted, when they were 4 wide it looked like a 3-3 because the Es (overhang stand-up LBs) flexed out with the slot WRs. Alignments doesn't force the Offense to double team defenders, player ability does. Yes, a 7 man box would have helped to stop O'Quinn from getting those key 3rd down runs on scrambles, but he was scrambling because Union dropped 5 into coverage and no one was open. Play RV 1 on 1 and see what happens, they've got the best WR corp in 2D imo, maybe in the 2D and 2C. I wouldn't single cover those guys.
  20. bad news for the Generals is theyre out of 1A cupcakes, time to play the big boys now. I guess Battle counts as a big boy lol
  21. I know better than to get into a schematics discussion on here but here I go, Ive seen this 5-3/3-5 argument in regard to Unions Defense on here for awhile, just exactly what in your opinion is the difference is between the two sets? How did the "old 5 3" defense align?
  22. Been on here for 17 years, enjoyed every one of them but it seems like lately several threads have taken nasty turns, included but not limited to digging into peoples personal lives and trying to expose them. Hopefully we can right the ship and keep this going.
  23. At this point Union is a shoo-in for the playoffs, but they are on the bubble in terms of hosting a playoff game.
  24. Raiders will play tough and have several.offensive weapons but I'm sticking with there being a big gap between 1A and 2A this season. Generals by a TD
