The biggest advantage to being held back is probably academically.  I could have started school a year earlier than I did because of my October birthday.  My parents decided against it.  So I was 18 basically my whole senior year.  That made a big difference in my maturity level.  Being 19 as a freshman in college I think made it easier for ME to transition to college life, studies, sports, WEEKEND MIXERS, etc.

FWIW, I started early, and was always competitive with my peers from an athletic and academic standpoint. Would never change it, but I see where it may be an issue with some kids. Especially my own, one of whom has a birthday within a few days of my own.

this is a funny story, but true. several years ago Powell Valley retired Thomas Jones' jersey, on of the speaker was no other than PHIL ROBBINS, he went on and on about all the things THOMAS JONES had done while in high school and while at the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA and being a first round draft choice. ROBBINS told THOMAS had done all these things before age 19, he then said just think THOMAS if you would have went to GATE CITY  you would now be a SENIOR!!!LIKE HIM OR NOT THATS SOME FUNNY STUFF THERE.

After all the grief VT is receiving for NOT WEARING THEIR TEAM COLORS, I expect they are trying to dump those rags as quickly as possible. But I can kinda' understand...the maroon/orange combo is pretty harsh on the eyes.

JLA is good there is no doubt about it. However, I believe that Justin McCracken is still the best QB that I know of to come through SWVA. Only true D1 prospect. Working out with Alabama, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, West Virginia, and plenty of other D1 and D2 schools. However, his SAT and GPA kept him from going to one of those schools which is extremely disappointing. Months after attending Liberty University as QB he decided he was done with football. 
 
Im not taking away from John Luke or Sturgle from Abingdon because they are excellent QBs. However, I often hear people say yeah so and so could go play at Tech or Tennessee or blah blah blah. But, a lot of people does not understand what a true D1 prospect is. There is not many in this area. Big fish in a small pond, gets exposed to bigger fish in a much bigger lake.
 
With my time I spent at the Youngstown State University, those guys are some serious athletes and most of the guys Ive watched in SWVA would be the typical average Joe out there. Like I said not taking away from the kids and their passion for the game, but Youngstown to say the less, are Ohio State rejects. 
 
I know I am going to get some grief over this post but, just kills me to sit in the stands and here yeah so and so is getting is getting looked at by blah blah blah.

I'm not going to comment in a public forum about kids making regrettable decisions as kids.  Something we have all done at some time in our lives.  I hope others share the same philosophy.
 
I felt comfortable speaking of suspensions in general terms given the radio guys discussed it Friday night and it has been all over social media.  That is as far as I will take it. 

Tazewell is larger and superior to Va High? Not sure about that statement.
 
VA High has more talent than John Battle but Battle will play hard since it is a rivalry game. VA High has consistently underachieved with Crist as opposed to the success they had under Wheeler. I'll still pick the Bearcats to win a close one because Battle has 0 speed and their offense is really bad.   

For Pete's sake...how do you know what VHS thought?  You don't.  Just accept that it was a good game and move on.  Better luck next year.

And I believe that most high school coaches that don't have talent  play their best 11. And while time has a way with proving success , it only has  4 years for the student athletes.

No matter outcome proud of the dogs tonight. Nobody gave them a chance.

Go VHS...would be a big road win to start season!

Union had boat loads of trouble with the power running of Clarke last year in the playoffs.  Each year is different but it should be no surprise that they struggled with the run in the first game of this year.  I expect they will fix that this week and play better v. Richlands.   I think ole Leatherhead is just hoping they are "overhyped" this year.  It is tough to give up the mantle of king.

Sixcat...Gene McEver, Beattie Feathers and Darrayl Wilson from VHS were some other SWVA all time greats.

Rest easy...VT will only wear those jerseys one time!  After UT puts a spanking on them in Bristol, they will blame the jerseys and banish those gawd-awful things to the boiler room closet deep in the bowels of VPI!

BTW:  When did UT switch from Adidas? 

Also, Im not a big fan of the Vols smokey gray unis and I am no fan of these either but I am more of a traditionalist also.

Tennessee just announced they are going with the traditional jerseys. Thank you Dave Hart!
