Ditto 10 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 All this talk about football has me wondering, as fans, what, in your opinion are the best and worst places to travel for a football game? A reason or two would be nice, maybe the drive, or seating, or whatever makes you feel that way about a certain stadium/town.
deuceswild 15 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 Holston's visitor seating could use some work. Rural Retreat's is ample but could use an update. Chilhowie visitor seating is some of the best around. I usually sit on the visitor's side when I go to home games there lol.
losheyhombres 11 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 hmmmm, best place probably Mitchell Stadium in good ol' Blfd. Worst by far Community Stadium in Rural Retreat!! What a dump!!!
Unchained 587 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 I always enjoyed traveling to Coeburn and Carl McConnell Stadium. Good seating, good view, good food. Betsy Layne KY the worst that I have ever been to (seating atrocious). Best food-Rye Cove and that delicious Eagle's nest. Worst food-GC and that black beauty hot dog chili :)
ghs73 157 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 i would say gate city because their overflow fans always set on the visitors side and in past when ghs played them you would not have enough seating for the visitors fans most games.
frito gonzales 103 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 Worst seating I think is Marion/Grundy. Marion because the bleachers are small and divided and Grundy because there always seems to be a light pole in front of you.
VivaFutbol 10 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 George Wythe is a good stadium overall. Not a bad seat in the house. Holds 5000 if you sit around the hill. Great hotdogs as well.
deuceswild 15 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 George Wythe is a good stadium overall. Not a bad seat in the house. Holds 5000 if you sit around the hill. Great hotdogs as well. Visitor seating at GW is kinda small and concrete bleachers hurt my old arse. Hotdogs are good.
Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 Been to about 30 SWVA stadiums. Worst one by a MILE was Mount View. Not even remotely close. Best, Mitchell Stadium. Also liked Tennessee High's, an interesting concept.
redtiger 1,742 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) Hurley. Long, bad drive and home/visitors seating is on the same side. The Cliff is always muddy and after they redid the field all of the glass made it worse. But there is something about playing over there that I always looked forward to. Holstons field/seating kinda sucks. For the players the locker rooms are too far from the field. Im not a big fan of the setup at Castlewood, concessions are a long way from the stands and you have to go up steps from the stands to go back down steps to go up hill to the parking. again for the players the locker rooms are too far away. Clintwood has a nice setup(as long as the visitor band isint at the game, not enough seating), I like the corner bleachers. Nicest field in SWVA IMO. The parking all around town in unique. I like the setup at Haysi, good visitor and home seating, descent field. Although the parking is pretty bad Edited July 19, 2011 by redtiger
Lance 228 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 worst ever is Carroll County...drive 3 hours and get screwed over by the refs and taunted by rednecks....no thanks. I know I will catch hell for saying that, i always do....don't care.

Tigers_07 72 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 the best place to travel to me by far is Mitchell Stadium. good seats, good view, and good hot chocolate. the worst place is a tie between Giles and Hurley. Giles has the worst visiting bleachers I've ever seen. make one wrong move and you'll end up in the hospital. Hurley has the worst field, no matter how hard they try to make the field look good, it ends up being a swamp either way.
Bigrhsfan 884 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 I have to say, that I hate going to CC also. The drive is a bit_h and the lighting is/was awful along with the bleachers ! ( sorry Huntercav ) Have they fixed the lighting over there yet ? The Grundy visitor seating is bad also. As stated before, there always seems to be a pole in the way. The best is Bluefield as far as the stadium goes. Best seating around ( not a bad seat in the house ) and the parking isn't bad either. Ryan4VT 4,557 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 Mitchell Stadium is the best hands down, Im not real sure any stadium in the area compares. Ample parking, both home and away hold the same amount. Two concession stands. Its a great place, really. Worst? Gate City/Carroll/Grundy. As mentioned before, Gate Citys non season ticket holders sit on 3/4 of the visitor side. And I dont know how other teams travel, but for the Richlands game at GC, seating is always an issue. All the bad things of Carroll have been stated. To add to the Grundy, Im not that big a fan of the two loudspeakers sitting 5 feet above your head blasting the announcer at you. Lol No offence Lance/all other Grundy fans. VivaFutbol 10 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 It's a toss up between Mitchell and Salem Stadium. If you haven't been to Salem Stadium, you are missing out.
Unchained 587 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) It's a toss up between Mitchell and Salem Stadium. If you haven't been to Salem Stadium, you are missing out. LOVE Salem Stadium. By far the nicest around (that I have visited-haven't visited Mitchell to compare). As for field conditions,I forgot to mention the now defunct Riggs Stadium at Appy. Much history and tradition, but the field was horrendous Edited July 19, 2011 by Unchained
redtiger 1,742 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 Everyone always bragon on Bullitt Park but I have never been impressed. But youve got to appreciate the history in that place.
cowboyzfanatik 10 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 The best is either Mitchell Stadium or Richlands. The worst, the trip to Grundy and Rural Retreat's visitors side.
Lance 228 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 I have complained about the Grundy WW2 era PA system for years...its in the way and sounds like crap...as for the trip over, I'd rather go there from Abingdon, Marion, or Richlands or where ever than i would drive to CC. To be honest though the ref situation is no longer an issue at CC and i've seen kids/rednecks causing problems at most schools even Grundy...there was a girl under the tarp beside the field house last year that looked like about a 10th grader who was dropping the F bomb about every 3 words...I wanted to have her removed lol....and being on the visitor side to take pics you get to hear a lot of what goes on...not as bad as other places but it happens....mostly at CC i just hate the long ride down there...I'm sure they hate the ride to the other SWD schools just as bad. gridironguru 11 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 Worst field ever is a tie between Ervinton and Burch. Worst I ever encounterd in my life and I've seen a lot of football in my 51 years was when I went to Big Creek WV a few years ago. They put us on the home side of he field and I had to watch a bunch of Red Necks heckle are kids and throw stuff from the stands. Then had to have a police escort to get the kids off the field. That definitly was a "Come on Man " moment.
