At first, it was something I felt I could be decent at, make a little cash, and go to college without having to get a "real" job. I kept doing it after college because I enjoyed the interaction with the kids and most coaches to be honest. When a disgruntled soccer coach followed by a newly elected Carroll County Board of Supervisors member coaching his sons football team followed me home after a game to stop in front of my house, enough was enough. Obviously Grayson. Galax completely dominated that game at the point of contact. Thought so just making sure lol. It's funny because a guy from Grayson was telling us how bad our line was before the game. sixcat

What I am referring to is the "holding" calls everyone wants away from the point of attack. The subjective calls that would not affect the outcome of the game whether called or not. I went back and reread it and deleted that part as I could see it wasn't meant that way by you.
BigWinners 1,643 Report Share Posted November 8, 2021 16 minutes ago, chipinbogey said: This x1000. If the average football fan knew half of what they think they know, we would not have a shortage of qualified officials nationwide. Are there missed calls in every game? Absolutely. But, they pay their $6 every week and officiate from the stands WITH bias, that part is important, about things that in the grand scheme of the game DO NOT MATTER. Some would be absolutely blown away to know there is a whole philosophical side to officiating, even more so about what goes into that process. I'm fine with them blowing up someone over a bad call, or booing because of a perceived miss. That is what it is. Some fan bases go ENTIRELY too far in picking on officials age, weight, appearance, etc. I have pretty thick skin and I am pretty comfortable with my appearance. Not everyone is though, and I cannot blame some for just leaving altogether. Sure, there is one bad apple in every fan base, however, some fan bases are just AWFUL in what these folks will say to officials. Sorry for the rant, but it has really went from problem to crisis this season. We have a people problem in this country. Decency is a thing of the past and the lack of will only continue to push others away from a very noble cause and enjoyable avocation. Yeah I'm no fan of attacking officials for anything besides an obvious blown call. Weight or appearance is too much. For those who hasn't watched the game on NFHS and listened to the coach, it is funny and describes the issue here perfectly. My job no longer allowed the time it took to coach and I thought officiating would be a good way to stay around the game I loved. The job I got shortly after no longer allowed for even that, but I can say it was a unique experience, and I feel like I have a unique point of view having been on three sides of the game. One of the issues is the assignment of games. It may be different now but they use to have you travel a long ways for games and the pay is not that good. I have seen some poorly officiated games the past two years including a state championship a couple years ago that was horrid and games shouldn't be decided by a poorly officiated game but unfortunately it happens. On the other hand I have witnessed games that had zero issues with officiating but people don't remember those. The one thing I don't see. In the past couple of years that I use to was when a flag was thrown and it was an iffy the group would get together and discuss if someone had a different view of the play, I don't see that now and I feel that hurts the game, because there is no way one person can see it all and just get it wrong sometimes. Agree completely the state championship game in 2019 was atrocious. Santa Clause couldn't have found his ass with two hands and a roadmap. He should never have been allowed to officiate such a meaningful game. I rarely criticize officiating. That game stands out as one of the few I'm willing to go on record as being overly critical. I will agree on travel as well. You and I both know a guy who left the AOA for the Roanoke Association based solely on (greatly) reduced travel time. I believe if Galax ran the ball more in the first half they probably win that game but the officiating definitely wasn't good overall. But for some reason, came out in the beginning throwing the football. Personally, I feel like the blocked punt was crucial. Galax blocked a punt right before halftime but Santa Claus called roughing the kicker. Which was ridiculous considering the ball went 4 yards downfield and 40 yards over the Galax sideline. RH was given a 1st down as a result of the penalty, eventually kicked a field goal and on the ensuing Galax possession ,got a pick-six. Easily a 10 point swing that should have gone the other way. BandanaVTDavis4321 1,719 Report Share Posted November 9, 2021 I started a thread on this very issue. I knew somebody, somewhere, would get burned come playoff time and their season would abruptly end. Covington's would have ended anyway by mid way through the 2nd quarter Thursday night against a far better team in Wytheville. Will write it again. For any High School Football Player who is vax'd. Go on about your business. You can be around anyone with Covid and still practice and play and not quarantine. If you are a High School Football Player who has not been vax'd, STAY the HE** away from little Johnny or little Jenny who doesn't play football in your English or Science Class. 6 feet and wear a mask and just to be safe, stay 10 feet. When I write safe, I am not talking about getting Covid or safety in a "Covid" way. I'm talking about staying safe as in......you are not one of those counted as "exposed" when little Johnny or little Jenny goes to school all day with a cough and a fever and doesn't play football, but then gets a conscience at about 2 pm and calls home, and after they call, they go straight to the ER for a Covid test. If you are an unvaxed player, STAY away from other humans outside of the obvious football practice and games as much as you possibly can. You do NOT want to be one of those counted as exposed when the contact tracing is done, because if you are, you are setting down, and it might be enough to set your entire team down and end their season very quickly (all done at Covington within about a 30 minute timeframe-season over). Guarantee you we get at least one more team in southwestern virginia or southern wv that gets burned. Of all the times to have your head on a swivel if you are an unvaxd player, this is the time. Because at this point, the mistake doesn't cost you one football game. It costs you your season.
